课题：A formal email to make enquiries about an English course in the UK

课时学习目标：

         识别与掌握询问类邮件的格式要求、内容组织和语言特点；

         用正确的格式和恰当的语言撰写一封正式邮件询问英语暑假课程的相关事宜。

1.       Analyzing the sample emails

1. Read the advertisement, and answer the following questions.

1. Where is Morsham college? 

Morsham college is located in the lovely seaside town of Morsham.

2. When do the courses start?

The courses start on July 14 and August 10. Also they last four weeks.

3. How much do they cost?

They cost 900 pounds.

4. What else can students do besides learning?

Students can also enjoy fun evening and weekend activities.

5. What can we do if we want to learn more about this summer camp?

We can contact Morsham College for more details.

2. Read the two sample emails from Li Ming and Zhang Hui, and answer the following questions.

1)         What are Li Ming’s and Zhang Hui’s enquiries and reasons?

Li Ming:  1. practice English — stay with an English family?

2. not used to milk and ice cream — milk-free options?

3. can only do the course for three weeks — less money?

Zhang Hui: 1. stay with friends off campus — cheaper?

2. want to improve writing — writing course?

3. fun activities — more information?

2)         How are emails different from letters in layout?

Similarities : a salutation, a body and a closing

Differences: (an email includes) a subject heading

3)         What’s included in the body part of the sample emails?

The writing purpose, the enquiries and reasons, and also the author’s gratitude.

4)         What are Li Ming’s and Zhang Hui’s writing styles? How do you know that?

Li Ming’s writing is quite informal while Zhang Hui’s is formal.

5)         How do the two writers express their politeness?

Li Ming: “Please tell me more about ...”, “It would be cool to …”, “If I did, would it …”

Zhang Hui: “Please could you give me...?” , “I would be very grateful if you could...”

6)         Which of the writing styles is more proper if you write to a college?

The formal writing style seems more appropriate here. Informal pieces of writing include blogs, diaries, emails and letters to those you’re quite familiar with, while formal pieces of writing include job applications, emails and letters to those you don’t know well.

7)         If you are to work out a checklist for a formal enquiry email, what items will you include?

Checklist:

 Does my email include a subject heading, a salutation, a body and a closing?

 Does the body part of my email include the writing purpose, a clear statement of the                enquiries and the reasons, and the gratitude towards the recipient?

 Is the language appropriate as a formal email?

2.     Drafting

Imagine you are going to the summer camp in Morsham college. Please make at least two enquiries and give the reasons.

3. Writing

Write an email in a formal way and make at least two enquiries in it.

Dear sir or madam,

I am writing to learn more about your English summer camp.

Since I am a keen fan of literature, I would like to find more about the courses. Would we learn about the Shakespeare’s play? It would be of great help if you could enclose a detailed course plan.

I have been in deep love with the sea since I was 10 years old. Therefore, I was wondering whether there would be a trip to the seaside during the four-week summer camp. If there was not, could I visit the sea on my own after class?
