Mangrves are trees that typically grw in saltwater alng casts. But sme red mangrves end up deep in the rainfrests f Mexic's Yucatan Peninsula. These plants live in freshwater alng the San Pedr Martir River. That's nearly 200 kilmeters frm the sea. Scientists wanted t knw hw these mangrves gt trapped s far inland. Carls Burel was amng them. Burel's team first investigated where the freshwater mangrves came frm. They started by cllecting their leaves and then cmpared their DNA t the leaves frm castal mangrves which were grwing alng the Gulf f Mexic. The DNA helped identify the rigins f the mangrves n the San Pedr Martir River. They had started alng the Gulf f Mexic, sme 170 kilmeters away frm the river. The team discvered ther evidence that this ecsystem had nce been castal. They discvered 112 ther species in this regin that are typically fund near casts.
The researchers lked at the sil t. "These sediments （沉积物）near the mangrves revealed exactly what we expected," says ExequielEzcurra, an eclgist at the University f Califrnia. In all, the researchers turned up castal stnes, shells f sea snails and clay sediments rich in shell fragments （碎片）. These led the researchers t cnclude the area used t be part f the cean lng ag.
Cmputer mdels f hw sea level has changed ver time cnfirmed thse findings. The mdels shwed that when sea levels were higher in the past, the cean merged with the lwer basin f the San Pedr Martir River. That wuld have been arund 150,000 t 130,000 years ag. Stanfrd University researchers have develped a device called a nature-inspired aerial grasper, r SNAG, which can be attached t a quadcpter drne （四轴无人机） t give it feet and legs like thse f an eagle. “What surprised us was that they did the same aerial military exercise, n matter what surfaces they were landing n,” ne f the researchers, William Rderick, explained in the news release. “They let the feet handle the variability and cmplexity f the surface texture itself,” he said.
