What a year, it’s been for music! Although the industry is still influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, so many talented artists were able to put out hit songs, and music videos this year. Here are some of the best ones!
“Kiss Me More (feat. SZA)”— Doja Cat
It has taken Doja Cat many years to become an artist capable of critical respect. Planet Her is one of her most breathtaking albums released, and among so many standout tracks (歌曲), “Kiss Me More (feat. SZA)” takes the lead. With a tasty hook, soft and comforting disco atmosphere, the song deserves all the recognition it has gotten.
“Easy On Me”—Adele
Adele made her long-awaited return this year. Her track “Easy On Me” broke the world record for the most streamed song in 24 hours, with 24 million streams. Adele is the queen of ballads, and we. love “Easy On Me” for its subtle soul sounds, daring vocals, and heartfelt message about asking for forgiveness from our loved ones.
“Happier Than Ever”—Billie Eilish
Talented artists like Billie Eilish only come once in a generation. We believe “Happier Than Ever” is to Eilish what “Bohemian Rhapsody” is to Queen. Sure, maybe the former song isn’t as rock-heavy or revolutionary as the latter, but it is similarly emotional, vocally impressive, and a song we think will remain as a “classic” in years to come.
“Butter”—BTS
If the Beatles brought the “British Invasion” to the U. S. in the 60s, BTS is bringing the Korean Wave in the 2020s. This year, the beloved K-pop group’s “Butter” broke so-many records, and it’s hard to keep track. What makes the song so tasty is its sweet and playful atmosphere, amusing lyrics, and ability to show each group member’s unique personality. Because of that, it easily became a smooth summer anthem, which gives us a reason to smile, dance, and sing for a change.

I first met C. S. Lewis in primary school. I wasn’t in the habit of stealing, but I kept forgetting to return my blue-clothed copy of The Silver Chair. The librarian must have given up ever seeing it again, perhaps thinking there was magic happening when a child loved a book so much to spirit it away.
Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland, on the 29th November 1898. Growing up near the Belfast Lough, a beautiful place with fascinating scenery, Lewis developed a passion for landscape when he was young, which was reflected in his famous series, The Chronicles of Narnia.
When he was 10, his mother died and he was sent to a boarding school. At the age of 19, he served in the army and was wounded in the Battle of Arras, after which he went to study in Oxford University. After graduation, he served as an English Literature tutor in this university for 29 years.
In Oxford University, Lewis was joined by his best friend Tollers, a lecturer in Old English to form Thẹ Inklings: a literary discussion group. They met weekly, drinking tea and generating a creative energy that resulted in some of the greatest literary works written.
Lewis became a popular broadcaster enhancing morale (士气) during WW2. Publication of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, came in 1950. In 1954, Lewis was elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University. In 1956, he published the seventh and final novel in the Narnia series, The Last Battle (which received the Carnegie Medal). The same year he married a poet, Joy Gresham. Lewis lost his own battle in 1963.
Having sold over 100 million copies in 47 languages, Lewis gave most of his royalties (版税) to the poor. Living simply, he hated displays of wealth.
And now, as I brush past the coats in my wardrobe, I wish to feel the crunch of snow beneath my feet and find myself in Narnia. But if I can’t, I can hear Lewis’ wisdom: “You can make anything by writing.”

Having been born along the shores of Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa, Rahmina Paulette said she has witnessed firsthand the effects of climate change leading to great difficulties like drought and floods.
The 15-year-old Kenyan teenager said East Africa is highly dependent on Lake Victoria, but high pollution has led to poisoning of the water, soil erosion and health problems in people living around the lake.
As Paulette grew older, she realized she was slowly turning from being a witness to a victim of lake degradation. So, she decided to take action and save the lake in her own little way.
“Being an Indigenous person from Lake Victoria, I would like to help restore the ecosystem for my community that has an ancestral connection to the lake and also for the future generations to enjoy the cool breeze, good smells and see the biodiversity within Lake Victoria,” Paulette said.
In her efforts to end pollution in the lake, Paulette started an environmental organization called Kisumu Environmental Champions.
The young environmental champions carry out their activities during the weekends, and the group focuses on environmental conservation, climate change awareness and wildlife conservation.
The group, with about 200 members so far, has taken up the removal of the invasive plant hyacinth from the lake to make eco-friendly products. This project has earned Paulette international recognition. The group has made furniture, paper, cards, folders, document holders, bags and carton boxes from the water hyacinth.
With help from her mother, Paulette is trying to increase activities as she urges all Kenyans to incorporate eco-friendly ways in their day-to-day lives.
Apart from activists like Paulette, other organizations are casting the net wider in their attempt to save the lake. One such group is nonprofit Osienala in western Kenya. The organization has been cooperating with international partners such as those from China to save Lake Victoria.
8. What causes the problems of Lake Victoria?
A. Soil erosion. B. Drought and flood.
C. Poisoning water. D. Climate change and pollution.
9. What does the underlined word “degradation” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Disappearance. B. Expansion. C. Damage. D. Restoration.
10. How does Paulette help save Lake Victoria?
A. By planting more hyacinths. B. By removing the hyacinths with her mother.
C. By building a factory to make products. D. By setting up an organization.
11. What can we know about the Osienala?
A. It casts some nets over the lake. B. It makes money while protecting the lake.
C. It seeks foreign cooperation to save the lake. D. It’s another organization founded by Paulette.

Of the 7 billion people on Earth roughly 6 billion own a cellphone, which is pretty shocking, given that only 4.5 billion have access to a working toilet.
So how are cellphones changing us? On average, people spend 4.7 hours a day looking at their phone. Combined with the length of time spent in front of computers, this has led to an increase in the nearsightedness. In North America, in the 1970s about 1/4 of the population had nearsightedness, where today nearly half do; and in some parts of Asia, 80 — 90% of the population is now nearsighted.
And it can be hard to put your phone down, take for example the game Candy Crush. As you play the game, you achieve small goals causing your brain to be rewarded with little bursts of dopamine, and eventually, you are rewarded with new contents of the game. This novelty also gives little bursts of dopamine, and they together create what is known as a “compulsion loop”, which just happens to be the same loop responsible for the behavior associated with nicotine or cocaine. According to a recent study, 93% of young people aged 18—29 report using their smartphones to avoid boredom. Without their phones, they may suffer “nomophobia”—the fear or anxiety of being without their phones.
Your smartphone can also disrupt your sleep! The screen produces a blue light which has been shown to change our biological clock, reducing the time spent in deep sleep, which is linked to the development of diabetes, cancer, and obesity.
Of course, smartphones also completely change our ability to access information, most notably in poor and minority populations. 7% of Americans are entirely dependent on smartphones for their access to the Internet.
So while phones are in no way totally bad, and have been a part of positive change in the world, there’s no denying that they are changing us.
12. Why does the writer mention the near-sighted population in paragraph 2?
A. To call on people to stop using cellphones.
B. To demonstrate the bad influence cellphones have on our eyes.
C. To show the eyesight differences between westerners and Asians.
D. To warn us that shortsightedness caused by computers is becoming worse.
13. How does a man with “nomophobia” probably feel if his phone isn’t accessible?
A. Anxious. B. Energetic. C. Addicted. D. Excited.
14. How do cellphones influence our sleep according to the writer?
A. They provide too much exciting information that makes us sleepless.
B. They produce a special light that can cause less deep sleeping time.
C. They can lead to serious diseases related to sleeping problems.
D. They have clocks that ring too loud for us to fall asleep.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. How Do Cellphones Change Us? B. Put Down Your Cellphone Now!
C. Can We Live Without Cellphones? D. Don’t Let Cellphones Ruin Your Eyes!
【答案】12. B13. A14. B15. A

Nowadays in a prosperous world, we don’t only expect to obtain money through our labor. _____16_____ To help us on the search for fulfilling work, here are some useful ideas.
Accept that being confused about careers is perfectly normal
Nowadays there are about half a million varieties of work. The result? We can become so anxious about making the wrong choice that we end up making no choice at all. Psychologists call this “the paradox of choice”, a problem caused by too many options. So we should acknowledge that confusion is natural. _____17_____
Know yourself
Start by writing down everything you’ve ever enjoyed doing or making, which might include building a tree house, or sorting out the winter clothes. Then there will, somewhere, be the shape of an ideal future working self, but it’ll be in need of being analyzed thoroughly. That’s where philosophy comes in. Philosophy is the art of clearing up, and demanding logic of our first thoughts.
Try something
_____18_____ But we need data, and we can only understand ourselves and others by colliding with the real world, in the process getting to know both it and our own natures. We need to take small steps to gather information, for example, by interning or volunteering.
_____19_____
So many bad self-help books are about confidence. But in a strange way, it truly does seem as if the difference between success and failure is sometimes just the courage to give it a go. _____20_____ It makes people imagine only certain people, but not oneself, have the right to get certain things.
