2. understand the introduction of mysteries by comprehending the video about four natural phenomena;

3. analyze and summarize four unsolved mysteries;

4. fully activate learning schema about “the unknown”and get well-prepared for the unit.

Step 1	Guess the meaning of the title of the unit; Brainstorm the “unknown”.	Activate Ss’ knowledge background (language knowledge & general knowledge) about the theme .	1 min
Step 2	Give the role “the introducer” to Ss, and lead them to predict the content of the whole unit; Introduce the topics of the 7 periods in the unit in general.	Further engage Ss to brainstorm related ideas; Fully activate Ss’ schemata about the theme; Help Ss generally understand the unit and get well-prepared.	2 mins
A brief study of vocabulary (Preview)
Step 3	Read and clarify the meanings of the key words and expressions, which would be applied in the period and the unit. Elicit some collocations and example sentences of the words in various contexts.	Relate the new language points to Ss’ existing language knowledge and help them get prepared for the following tasks.	4 mins
Four natural phenomena introduction (Starting out for the unit)
Step 4	Predict the ways to introduce mysterious natural phenomena before watching the video. Watch the video and answer the questions: What natural phenomena are mentioned? How are they described? From what aspects?	Guide Ss to brainstorm and understand the ways to develop a passage or introduction in English language; Develop Ss’ ability to get and integrate general information.	6 mins
Step 5	Replay the video clips one by one and guide Ss to summarize and retell the stories by transforming the introduction into forms. Summarize the key words and expressions in the stories and consolidate them by recognizing their pronunciations and meanings.	Develop Ss’ ability to get and summarize specific information as well as the ability to transform information into other forms; Practice Ss’ listening and speaking ability and engage them in the lessons; Consolidate what they have learned. Enhance systematical thinking in learning and form a good habit of evaluation.	10 mins
Four mysteries in the world (Starting out for the unit)
Step 6	Show the four pictures of mysteries and guide Ss to recognize and introduce them; Introduce the mysteries through reading some authentic reading materials and videos collected from newspapers, authority websites, academic papers, etc. Ss collect information they need to record and fill in the information form in order to retell them after my introduction. Explain and elicit the usages of some words in the reading materials.	Broaden Ss’ horizons and activate their interest in the topic of mysteries; Develop their independent learning ability by guiding them to fill in the information sheet; Strengthen Ss’ learnt knowledge through applying it to further retelling.	17 mins

1.Surf the internet to investigate the mysteries in the world and think about “What other unsolved mysteries (ancient civilisation) do you know of?” 2. Share the stories you collected next period. 3. Preview the passage The Mysteries of the Maya on pages 50-52.
