In the past, scientists had t make special signs n each f the animals. But in the future, they may have 2 much easier way t identify (辨认) them thanks t facial recgnitin (面部识别) technlgy.
A research team frm China’s Nrthwest University is using facial recgnitin technlgy t identify thusands f snub-nsed mnkeys (金丝猴) that live n Qinling Muntain in Shanxi Prvince.
Similar t human facial recgnitin, the technlgy creates a system that includes every mnkey’s facial picture, Xinhua reprted.
“When the system is fully develped, we can cnnect it with cameras set up in the muntains. The system will recgnize the mnkeys, name them and study their behavir,” said Zhang He, a member f the research team.
“We used mbile phnes and cameras with’ the mnkeys in tests and stayed abut 3 t 10 meters away frm them," he added. “There is n need t disturb the mnkeys.”
Cmpared with humans, facial recgnitin technlgy fr mnkeys is mre difficult because f their hairy faces. The clr f their hair makes them easy t hide in their envirnment. These are the reasns that make it harder fr cmputers t identify them.
“Mnkeys d nt wrk with researchers in the same way humans d. It is difficult, t lake high-quality (高质量的) pictures and vides f them, which are needed t imprve the system,” said Li Bagu, leader f the research team.
There are abut 4,000 snub-nsed mnkeys living n Qinling Muntain nw. The team plans t successfully identify every mnkey that lives there.
