Please listen carefully. We’ll be hiking down into the Grand Canyon soon. But even though it’s comfortable 26℃ here now, it’ll get much hotter as we go down. In fact, when we get to the bottom four hours from now, it’ll be 43℃ down there. So, most importantly, everyone must take along at least three liters of water. You’d better wear comfortable clothes and take some medicine in case you suffer from an illness. The heat can kill! In fact this year four people have already died in the Grand Canyon from heat exhaustion. One of them, a healthy 24-year-old man, just died one week ago. These have been the first heat-related deaths in the Grand Canyon in five years. Normally, people die in the Grand Canyon when they fall into it. Sometimes they also just get lost or get bitten by snakes, but this year has been extremely hot. The average daily temperature has been 41℃ at the bottom. So be careful and tell me if you feel uncomfortably hot. Last, I will carry a GPS; one will take a compass; four other persons will take a map. Well, good luck!

The literary world has a new star. Novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah is the winner of the 2021 Nobel Prize in literature in recognition of his “compassionate penetration (洞察力) of the effects of colonialism (殖民主义) and the fate of the refugee (难民)”.
Gurnah grew up in Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Tanzania. In 1964, Gurnah was forced to leave for England as a refugee, where he began to reflect on his experiences in a diary and then through stories. Through the years, he wrote 10 novels and stories that explore the suffering caused by war and colonialism. “The thing that motivated the whole experience of writing for me was this idea of losing your place in the world,” Gurnah told The New York Times.
His 1994 novel Paradise, which tells the story of a boy growing up in early 20th century Tanzania, marked his breakthrough as a novelist and won the Booker Prize. — Afterlives, his most recent work, continues the narrative of Paradise and takes place during the period of German colonialism in Tanzania.
Before he retired, Gurnah, 73, was a professor of English and Postcolonial Literatures at the University of Kent in England. Although Gurnah’s first language is Swahili, he adopted English as his literary language. His writing often contains traces of Arabic, Swahili and German, as well.
Anders Olsson, the chair of the Nobel committee, said that Gurnah “is widely recognized as one of the world’s more preeminent post-colonial writers”.
Ethiopian-American novelist Maaza Mengiste described Gurnah’s writings as being “like a gentle blade (刀刃) slowly moving in” “He has written work that is absolutely unfearing and yet at the same time completely compassionate and full of heart for people of East Africa,” Mengiste said. “He is writing stories that are often quiet stories of people who aren’t heard, but there’s an insistence there that we listen.”
    24. What are Gurnah’s works mainly about?
    A. The life of the people in Tanzania.
    B. Effects of war and colonialism.
    C. Experiences of living abroad.
    D. Growth in an underdeveloped nation.

Sudan, the world’s last male northern white rhino (犀牛), died at 45 (elderly in rhino age) on Monday at Kenya’s Ol Pejeta Conservancy, about 130 kilometers north of Nairobi. The animal’s health had been in a bad state for the past month and recently worsened so much that he could no longer stand, so his treatment team decided to euthanize (使安乐死) him.
Born in Shambe, South Sudan, the rhino was captured two years after living in the wild and brought to the Dvur Królovė Zoo in the Czech Republic. He was moved to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy 34 years later.
This very special animal was beloved by many worldwide — and his death is a terrible warning of humanity’s threat to animals. Hunters in the 20th century wiped out most of this white rhino subspecies population, mainly for their horns, which were used in traditional Chinese health treatments. More than 2,000 of the animals lived in the wild in the 1960s, but their numbers had dropped to a couple of dozen by the end of the century. The only remaining northern white rhinos today are two captive (关在笼子里的) females — Sudan’s daughter Najin and granddaughter, Fatu. Neither is able to give birth naturally.
Now researchers are hoping to keep this kind of animal alive by artificially fertilizing Najin and Fatu’s eggs with sperm (精子) frozen from male northern white rhinos and then implanting the fertilized eggs into a female southern white rhino — a subspecies that was also threatened but has since grown quickly because of conservation efforts. Last year, as part of a campaign to raise money for such fertilization attempts, which experts say could cost as much as US $9 million, Sudan acquired a Tinder social medial account where people can donate money by swiping right on their phone screen. As of late Tuesday, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy had yet to update its website, which still read, “Visit the last three northern white rhinos” — a ticking alarm clock to which some humans are desperately trying to add time.
    28. What is Ol Pejeta Conservancy?
    A. A forest. B. A river.
    C. An animal hospital. D. A nature reserve.
    29. Why did Sudan’s treatment team plan to euthanize him?
    A. He was too old. B. He couldn’t stand.
    C. The team had no money to cure him. D. The team wanted to stop his pain.
    30. What can we learn about white rhinos from the passage?
    A. Their horns have great artistic value in China.
    B. The two captive white rhinos can now give natural birth.
    C. They were hunted in large numbers in the 20th century.
    D. Their number had dropped to 2,000 by the end of the 20th century.
    31. What do we know about artificial fertilization from the last paragraph?
    A. It needs a huge amount of money to carry out.
    B. It was first carried out in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
    C. It is a safe but slow way to produce white rhino subspecies.
    D. It has been used in many other young rhinos besides Najin and Fatu.

New genetically modified (转基因) apples designed by a biology company are being released this fall but won’t be labeled as GMOs (转基因生物). They’re called Arctic apples, whose genes have been changed from their original Golden Delicious state to make sure that after the fruits are cut open and exposed to the air, their flesh won’t turn brown in color.
The development company, Okanagan Specialty Fruits, says the apples may be on sale as bagged slices in up to 400 stores this season throughout the Midwest and Southern California. The fruit won’t bear the standard “produced with genetic engineering” label because of a 2016 law allowing codes to be visible on the packaging that link to a website with information on how the fruit was made.
The apples were made using a technique called gene silencing. The Okanagan team engineered the fruit’s DNA to produce less enzyme (酶) that causes the white, inner flesh to brown so that the new and improved slices will stay fresh for up to three weeks. Although there are only about 250 acres of Arctic apple trees currently planted across the US, the team hopes GMO fruits can reduce waste and increase apple sales overall.
While some experts believe that the Arctic apple’s GMO status isn’t harmful, groups opposing GMOs have started protesting the apples. An organization called Friends of the Earth claims that they’re “understudied, unlabeled and unnecessary.” Right now, apple slices treated with calcium and vitamin C can be purchased off Amazon with the promise of not browning before they arrive on the customer’s doorstep. And, a little bit of lemon juice is an easier and more natural way to prevent cut apples from turning color for a few hours.
    32. The Arctic apples will not be labeled “GMO” because ________.
    A. actually these apples are not genetically modified food
    B. the fruit will be sold as bagged slices in up to 400 stores
    C. there is not enough space for the label on the packaging
    D. information of their apples can be checked on the Internet
    33. How do Arctic apples stay fresh according to the Okanagan team?
    A. By changing the fruit’s DNA to reduce relevant enzyme.
    B. By decreasing the percentage of engineers in the team.
    C. By treating apple slices with calcium and vitamin C.
    D. By adding a little bit of lemon juice to the slices.
    34. What is the Friends of the Earth’s attitude to Arctic apples?
    A. Disapproving. B. Indifferent. C. Favorable. D. Cautious.
    35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. A Novel Way to Keep Arctic Apples From Turning color.
    B. Protest against Apples Entering US Markets due to the label.

根据文中第二段的第二句“The fruit won’t bear the standard ‘produced with genetic engineering’ label because of a 2016 law allowing codes to be visible on the packaging that link to a website with information on how the fruit was made.”(这种水果不会贴上标准的“基因工程生产”标签,因为2016年的一项法律允许在包装上显示代码,该代码可以链接到一个关于水果如何生产的网站)可知,2016年的一项法律允许这种水果不贴上转基因的标签,但需要在包装上显示代码,消费者可以通过该代码查阅到这种苹果的信息。故选D项。
根据文中第三段的第二句“The Okanagan team engineered the fruit’s DNA to produce less enzyme (酶) that causes the white, inner flesh to brown so that the new and improved slices will stay fresh for up to three weeks.”(奥卡那根大学的研究小组改造了这种水果的DNA,使其产生更少的酶可以使白色果肉变成棕色的酶。 故选A项。
故选A项。
通读全文尤其是第一段中“New genetically modified (转基因) apples designed by a biology company are being released this fall but won’t be labeled as GMOs (转基因生物).”

    36. 根据后文“Courses are among the most important components of college — they’re what you’re paying for, after all. However, a big part of college life is extracurricular activities.(课程是大学最重要的组成部分之一——毕竟,它们是你要支付的费用。然而,大学生活的很大一部分是课外活动)”结合文章结构可知,本空所填内容应该是小标题;又因为该部分主要介绍了大学生参加课外活动的重要性,故A项“离开教室后学习也不会停止”符合语境,概括了本段的主要内容。故选A。
    37. 根据后文“You can take part in various sports, political groups and even plays on the stage.(你可以参加各种运动、政治团体,甚至在舞台上表演)”可知,本句是在说明大学生可以参加的活动,B项中的“many groups and activities”与后文可以对应。
    38. 结合上文“Doing well in courses is important, and if you’re planning to stay in the US after graduation, the connections you make in college can be equally as significant.(学好课程很重要,如果你打算毕业后留在美国,你在大学里建立的关系也同样重要)”和本空后面一段“Knowing someone who knows someone at the place where you want to work can be very beneficial. This is why it’s important to make connections with your professors. A lot of internships, jobs and graduate schools require academic references.(认识一个在你想工作的地方认识的人是非常有益的。这就是为什么与教授建立联系很重要的原因。很多实习、工作和研究生院都需要学术参考)”可知,本句主要是在说明和教授建立联系,F选项中have good relationships with at least a few of your professors对应后文中make connections with your professors。
    39. 根据后文“While it may be true compared with how knowledgeable Europeans are about the countries on their continent, it’s a bit of an unfair comparison.(虽然与欧洲人对欧洲大陆国家的了解程度相比,这可能是真的,但这有点不公平)”可知,本句主要是在说明某个国家对地理的了解,故E项“据说美国人对地理和别的国家了解甚少”符合语境。故选E。
    40. 根据上文“The continental US is almost the same size as continental Europe.(美国大陆的面积几乎与欧洲大陆相同)”可知,上文提到了美国大陆的面积,前面的“the same size”可以锁定G项中的“smaller”。

My parents do a lot of embarrassing things! Usually, it’s my dad who sings silly songs or tells corny jokes around my friends. But a few weeks ago, it was my mother who played the embarrassing-parent role.
While my mom and I were shopping, we ran into my teacher, who mentioned that the school didn’t have a music teacher to help our class put together a performance for Winter Fair. And, right then and there, my mom said, “I know the perfect song and dance. I’ll teach it to the kids!”
Before I could say “Please don’t”, my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week. Oh, and just to be clear, it’s not as if she’s a professional entertainer. My parents run a small grocery store, and the only singing my mom does is in the shower.
“Um,” I said on our way home, “are you sure this is such a good idea?” “Of course!” she said. “If we want your school Winter Fair to happen, people need to step up and volunteer.” “I know volunteering is important,” I said, “but couldn’t you help out in Tex and Indi’s kindergarten instead?” She laughed, “Don’t be silly. We will have fun!”
“OK, fellas!” my teacher said at 9:28 on Monday. “We’re going to stop silent reading a little early today because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for Winter Fair. Let’s all welcome Arizona’s mother.”
I looked up to discover my mom standing at the front of the room wearing the world’s silliest snowflake hat. “I’m super excited to be here with you!” my mom said, “I’m going to teach you a fun little song-and-dance performance I learned a few years back, when I did some theater in college. Here goes!”
Oh please, oh please, I said over and over in my head, let there be a fire drill, or an assembly, or a power failure, or anything to stop my mom from completely embarrassing herself — and me!!!
But apparently, my mom was not at all concerned about looking silly. She turned on some background music and started singing and dancing away.
    注意:
    1. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
    2. 续写词数应为150左右。
    Paragraph 1
“How I wish I could find a place to hide!” was all I could think.
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2
My mom turned out to be more than a little OK at performing.
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1
“How I wish I could find a place to hide!” was all I could think. I even thought that this would be the most embarrassing moment in my life. Would my classmates and teachers laugh at me for that? What could I do to stop her singing and dancing immediately? I found I couldn’t focus on her performance while she was singing and dancing. However, out of my imagination, all of my classmates and teachers enjoyed it very much. I could tell that from their reaction. Suddenly the applause burst out, which really surprised me.
    Paragraph 2
My mom turned out to be more than a little OK at performing. Not only did she present us with a great performance, but also she showed us that it is very important to step up and volunteer. As soon as she walked off the stage, I gave her a big hug and told her I was so proud of her. I'll always stand by her.
