An Asda driver has been hailed after he saved an elderly couple from a gas leak and walked nine miles in the snow to complete his deliveries.
Ron Teskowski, from Leeds, was meant to be on a day off when he discovered the gas leak. When he visited the elderly couple, he could smell gas and noticed they were at a loss of what to do, so he began to check the home, finding that an unlit hob (炉盘) had been left turned on for hours. He raised the alarm and was thanked for his potentially life-saving act at the time. Later he was recognized in the Extra Mile category at the Microlise Driver of the Year Awards.
Ron had been forced to abandon his car due to the conditions following a heavy snowfall in the region, but he was determined to reach his customers. He walked nine miles to work before taking out a full delivery.
His round that day took four hours longer than usual, but he saw how desperate some customers were and how appreciative they were when he arrived. He took out an extra delivery, arriving back to his base in Leeds after midnight.
Simon Gregg, Asda’s vice president of online grocery, said. “We’re really proud of Ron for winning this award for going the extra mile. Ron demonstrates the Asda values every day of going above and beyond to ensure our customers get their orders. He also identified a life-threatening issue with an elderly couple when out driving and got help and support. We’re really proud of him.”
Transport manager Charlotte Naylor said, “We’re massively appreciative of Ron, and get flooded with positive customer feedback about him on a regular basis.”
4. How did Ron notice there was a gas leak?
A. By checking the home. B. By asking the old couple.
C. By his sense of smell. D. By raising the alarm.

B. He helped people repair the gas.
C. He visited old friends on the way.
D. He walked to reach his customers.
6. What can we infer from what Charlotte Naylor said?
A. Asda is grateful for the work of its employees.
B. Asda’s value is to provide people with the best service.
C. Many customers send letters to praise Ron for his work.
D. Asda has been well supported by their customers.
7. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Asda driver won an award for going the extra mile.
B. Asda driver saved an elderly couple from a gas explosion.
C. Customers were left desperate in bad weather.
D. Customers felt grateful for Asda’s effort.
Growing up as kids we are told to share our toys and not to be selfish. We also live in an age when discussing our feelings is encouraged. But when does it all become too much? With new crazes trending all the time, such as dance challenges and wearing a carpet as a dress, the question is: when can sharing become oversharing on social media?
“Oversharing” has become associated with social media, but it isn’t exclusive to this platform. Imagine you head to a party and meet someone. Within five minutes they have revealed private details about their life. While some of us may try to escape these people, according to marriage advisor Carolyn Cole, this form of oversharing could come from a strong desire to connect with someone. But how does this translate to social media?
Dr. Christopher Hand, a lecturer in cyberpsychology (网络心理学), says the more details people disclose, the less sympathy we express when things go wrong. It seems that searching for sympathy by oversharing is generally considered as negative rather than the cry for help it could really be.
However, Dr. Hand’s research also seems to suggest that the more we post on a platform, the more socially attractive we become — if the posts that we bang out are positive. Even back in 2015, Gwendolyn Seidman PhD said that we should avoid complaining and being negative online. We should also avoid showing off, especially about our love lives. It makes sense — if your date is going “that well”, would you really have time to share a photo with text?
So, how can you know if you are oversharing? Well, why not ask your friends in real life. They would probably be happy to tell you if your posts about your breakfast or your complaints about your lack of money really are too much.
8. What does the underlined word “exclusive” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Unique. B. Similar. C. Relevant. D. Fundamental.
9. Which of the following may Dr. Hand agree with?
A. Sharing more details online can attract more sympathy.
B. Oversharing negative experiences is equal to crying for help.
C. Sharing negative posts can’t help one become socially attractive.
D. Oversharing isn’t likely to happen online when things go wrong.
10. According to the text, what should be avoided for online sharing?
A. Reflecting on past bad manners. B. Showing a great many expensive goods.
C. Writing a recipe for a balanced breakfast. D. Recording unforgettable moments with friends.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Developing good relationships by oversharing B. The “oversharing” phenomenon on social media
C. Sharing with friends in real life D. How to avoid oversharing
When given the choice, about 85% of people say they would not want to know about some negative event far in the future. Yet recently millions around the globe have downloaded FaceApp, which allows users to see how they might age in real life.
Many had fun with joking that they love the FaceApp old filter. Beneath the humor is a serious subject: How do we learn to relate to our future selves? It’s important that we try to because it could help strengthen the long-term decisions that we make. However, we often fail to make sacrifices for the grayer versions of ourselves.
More than half of the respondents in a recent survey of 2,800 Americans said they rarely or never thought about what their lives might be like 30 years from now. This isn’t surprising, since most of us are firmly rooted in the present and thinking about the distant future can seem like a distant priority (优先). My ongoing research might also offer an explanation: We tend to think about our future selves as if they are someone different from who we are today. In an effort to narrow these empathy (共情) gaps, my research workmates and I have tried to humanize people’s future selves in the same way others have tried to humanize charity receivers. Given that a photograph of one hungry child can spark emotional reactions, and cause viewers to donate, we have presented participants with vivid images of their distant selves.
That seems helpful. In a recently completed project in Mexico, we found that exposure to future-self images led more people to contribute to their pensions. Despite this research, I’m skeptical that the app users will suddenly increase their pension contributions and care about their health. The silly app isn’t paired with an immediate opportunity to change any of these things.
The lesson from FaceApp shouldn’t be that we need to marry hi-tech visuals with savings for retirement. The lesson, then, lakes the form of a question: What more can be done to urge us to think about, care for who we will one day become?
12. What can we learn about FaceApp?
A. It provides future-self images. B. It is the most downloaded app.
C. It helps people make decisions. D. It makes people age in real life.
13. Why do most respondents rarely think of their future life?
A. They have known future life from FaceApp.
B. They fail to make sacrifices for their future.
C. They attach greater importance to the present.
D. They consider future selves the same as today’s.
14. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Completing a project in Mexico. B. Offering aging images of participants.
C. Raising contributions among viewers. D. Giving a photograph of a hungry child.
15. What’s the author’s attitude to FaceApp?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Ambiguous. D. Unfavorable.
