CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation心肺复苏术) and first aid are related topics. It could be said that first aid is the more general of the two, and training in first aid might include instructions and practice on how to respond to a variety of medical emergencies that could be causing danger to life or to a part of a person’s body. One such medical emergency could be the stopping of breathing or heartbeat, and the right response, in this case, might be to perform CPR. Thus, CPR can be seen as a type of first-aid response.
There can be differences in the amount of first-aid training people learn, and courses can sometimes be broken down into emergency and standard training. Standard training is actually the more extensive of the two, and would include teaching and learning how to handle a variety of medical situations like bites from insects or animals, broken bones, poisoning, childbirth, and care of wounds. Emergency first aid tends to be limited to the teaching of CPR, how to handle choking emergencies, and instructions on wound care for heavy bleeding.
CPR and first aid may be taught together or are sometimes taken as separate courses. People may need a whole day of practice or longer before getting CPR certification, which should be obtained from recognized agencies like the Red Cross. The big difference between CPR and first aid, in terms of taking classes, is that CPR focuses only on learning to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and recognize those situations as soon as possible in which it should be performed, while first-aid classes may teach this too, but they will teach in the broader context of how people need to respond to lots of different injuries or illness.
The issue of CPR and first aid may get confusing when people are asked to get training in one or both of these. Some people may be asked to take a first-aid course and have CPR training. Those who need more extensive training in standard first aid certainly won’t satisfy this need by only taking a CPR course. Those confused about what training they need should get this issue clear with the person (usually an employer) requesting the training.
Being able to respond first in a medical emergency usually means needing to know CPR, but other knowledge could be just as necessary. For instance, how to stop uncontrollable bleeding or how to handle an episode of anaphylactic shock (过敏性休克) could be vital too.
    4. What is the purpose of performing CPR?
    A. To be qualified as a first-aid trainer. B. To make a person’s heart start beating again.
    C. To deal with all the medical emergencies. D. To gain practical knowledge of first aid.
    5. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
    A. CPR works faster when someone breaks his leg.
    B. CPR includes most courses of emergency training.
    C. Emergency first aid is more useful than CPR.
    D. Standard training deals with more medical cases.
    6. When can people get the chance to obtain CPR certification?
    A. When practicing a whole day in Red Cross.
    B. After saving someone with CPR.
    C. After finishing the CPR training.
    D. When getting instructions from recognized agencies.
    7. Where is this text probably taken from?
    A. A book review. B. An academic report.
    C. A health magazine. D. A maths exam paper.

Killer whales, or orcas, are known for their severe attacks on sea animals but they have never posed a threat to humans. However, since late July, the normally social animals have been intentionally attacking sailboats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal.
The strange behavior first surfaced on July 29, 2020, when a 46-foot boat was repeatedly attacked for almost an hour by nine orcas, causing the boat to rotate(旋转) 180 degrees and having its engine switched off. Since then, over 30 more similar incidents have been reported. On September 23, 2020, Spain's government banned boats of less than 50 feet in length from sailing in the 60-mile stretch of the Atlantic coastline between Ferrol and the Estaca de Bares Cape, where the attacks have been occurring.
Researchers across the world are trying to explain the orcas' behavior. Some believe it could be a result of the overfishing of the bluefish tuna — the orcas' primary food source — which has left the area's killer whales starving and unable to feed their babies. “I saw them look at boats carrying fish. I think they know humans are somehow related to food shortages,” says Ken Balcomb, senior scientist at the Center for Whale Research in Washington, USA. The environmentalists believe the sudden increase in boat traffic and fishing activities, after months of absence due to restrictions on human activity last spring, could also be contributing to the agitation.
However, Alfredo López, a biology professor in Galicia, Spain, thinks the attacks are defensive measures the orcas adopted to protect themselves against boat injuries. The researcher came to this conclusion after looking at the of the videos of a few incidents and noticing that two of the young killer whales involved had serious injuries. Hopefully, the experts will be able to find a way to restore the harmony between the animals and the humans soon.
    8. What do we know about orcas in paragraph 1?
    A. They are friendly to humans. B. They have changed their behavior.
    C. They are famous for hunting skills. D. They have met tough living conditions.
    9. Who hold(s) the idea that fishing activities caused the incidents?
    A. Ken Balcomb. B. The environmentalists.
    C. Alfredo López. D. Spain's government.
    10. What does the underlined word "the agitation" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. The attacks. B. Food shortages. C. The overfishing. D. Human activities.
    11. What might be a suitable title for this text?
    A. How do killer whales attack humans?
    B. Why Are Killer Whales attacking Boats?
    C. How can we live in harmony with animals?
    D. Why are boats banned from sailing on the sea?

Scientists have recently developed a method to 3D-print greener buildings using local soil that they say has the possibility to be in the lead in the construction industry.
Sarbajit Banerjee, a professor of chemistry and materials science and engineering at Texas A&M University, said 3D printing enabled them to print the entire front of a building, although getting such structures to meet existing building rules was still a significant challenge.
Concrete (混凝土) is still the important material used in many construction projects but it cannot be recycled and requires a lot of energy to mix and transport. The research team’s aim is to print structures using the type of soil that can be found in any garden.
“While concrete is widely used in housing and has enabled the growth of cities, this has come at a considerable environmental cost,” said Banerjee.
“The move to 3D-print concrete threatens to exacerbate this problem. However, we try to make a new example of construction that uses naturally sourced materials. Using such materials will further pave the way for building designs that are specifically adapted to the needs of the local climate.
What’s more, the use of local materials would reduce the need to transport concrete long distances, further reducing the environmental impact of the buildings.
The research team’s plan to replace concrete with the earth beneath our feet depends on their ability to improve the soil’s capability to stand the weight of the whole house, towards which Banerjee said they “are making excellent progress”.
Once they have a clearer idea of the limits of the technology, Banerjee and his team plan to further investigate how it might allow for building on other planets. For instance, they have worked on addressing the problem of building all-weather roads near the arctic area. They hope the technology could one day be used beyond Earth, to create settlements on the moon or even Mars.
    12. What’s the latest development in construction?
    A. Recycling concrete. B. Reducing the construction cost.
    C. 3D-printing buildings from local soil. D. Changing the construction rules.
    13. What does the underlined word “exacerbate” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
    A. solve. B. simplify. C. relieve. D. worsen.
    14. What is the condition for replacing concrete with the earth?
    A. The local climate. B. The soil’s weight-bearing capability.
    C. The environmental footprint. D. The cost of transportation.
    15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
    A. The outlook for further studies. B. The explorations of the arctic area.
    C. The limits of the new technology. D. The barrier to building on other planets.

Anyone who deals with teens knows how difficult the adolescent years can be. Teens are always known to do wild and dangerous things. ____16____ But now scientists have studied the physical development of the brain in more detail, leading to a new theory of why teens act the way they do.
Scientists discovered that though our brains are almost at their full size by the age of six, they are not fully developed. Now, scientists have found our brains continue to change till age 25. ____17____.
The studies confirm teens are more likely to take risks and behave in extreme ways. One way the brain does this is by changing the way teens think of danger and reward (回报). When teenagers think about rewards, their brains produce more chemicals that create pleasure than adult brains would. ____18____. It also makes teens feel more excited about new experiences than adults do.
Besides, researchers found it makes social connections especially rewarding. Generally, teenagers have an intense need to meet new people and think the youth may one day control the world they live in. As it’s still developing, a teenage brain can change to deal with new situations. ____19____. In this way, the brain encourages teens to have various friends.
Some people think that this hunt for greater rewards can sometimes lead teenagers to go to extremes. ____20____ It means that teens are more likely, and less afraid, to try new things or to be independent. The scientists’ findings suggest that in the long run, the impulses (冲动) of the teen brain are what help teens leave their parents’ care and live their own lives successfully.
    A. It is hard for the teens to adapt to new situations.
    B. The result is the changeable actions seen in teens.
    C. Therefore, it connects social rewards with more pleasure.

Ann loves dogs, but she doesn’t have time to keep even one. Her husband died from an accident, leaving little money but a 10-year-old son, Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation. She had to work all day to support the whole family. One morning, Ann found a lost dog wandering around the local school. She waited there for half an hour but nobody came back to look for it. She had no choice but to take it home and asked her son to keep an eye on the dog while she was working.
Ann took photos of the dog and printed off 400 FOUND fliers as soon as she came back from work. After a quick supper, Ann, with Jack, went out and put them in mailboxes. The next day, Ann went to the store and bought some pet supplies, asking the boy to look after it for another day, and she hoped it would be the last day. She didn’t forget to warn her son not to fall in love with the dog, for they had no money or time.
Four days later no one called to claim, so Ann’s family was still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley. One day when she arrived home from work, the dog barked madly at her and dashed into the boy’s room where Ann found Jack suffering from a heart attack.
“If you had come to me ten minutes later,” the doctor said, “Jack would not have been saved.”
Still no one called to claim the dog, and it became the best friend of her son. Ann decided to keep it, although she knew it would bring so much difficulty.

    3. 词句猜测题。第三段在分析虎鲸袭击人类的渔船行为的原因。举例说明了有的研究员认为是人类过度捕鱼可能导致虎鲸食物不足,引发虎鲸袭击渔船。划线词所在句子“The environmentalists believe the sudden increase in boat traffic and fishing activities, after months of absence due to restrictions on human activity last spring, could also be contributing to the agitation.”(环境学家认为好几个月的春季禁渔期结束,渔船流量突然增加和捕鱼活动也可能会导致这些虎鲸袭击渔船事件。)该句分析了另一个引发虎鲸袭击事件的原因,据此可以推测划线词的意思是虎鲸袭击事件。故选A项。

    【答案】Para. 1:
The next morning Ann got a call. A boy recognized his lost dog and called the number on the flier. Ann was trapped in a dilemma. She was having a hard struggle in her mind, unwilling to tear herself away from Riley and let it go for the moment. Not only had it saved her son’s life from jaws of death, but they truly regarded it as a member of their family. With much difficulty, she had no choice but to tell the news to her son, and both of them went silent in a second. A sound of dismay escaped the owner — Thomas’ throat, while Jack rooted himself against the wall, speechless.
    Para. 2:
An hour later, somebody knocked at the door. Everyone knew it was that man who came to pick up his dog. Thomas held Riley tightly in his arms while Jack stared at both of them, full of tears, without even one word. “It’s you!” Ann shouted when she opened the door. It was Dr. Alex who did the heart operation for Jack. When he saw what the two boys did, he hesitated for a while and then smiled to them, asking politely and gently: “Boys, can I help to look after you and your dog on the weekends? Of course, I’ll bring some delicious food for you there!” All of them burst out laughing, and Ann’s joy was immense.
