    The theme f this sectin is "share views n histric sites". By listening t a dialgue between Chinese and freign students n their way t Cnfucius temple, students can understand their views n Cnfucius temple, Cnfucius, his descendants and his educatinal thughts, s as t understand and reflect n the prfund influence f Cnfucius and his thughts n Chinese histry and traditin.

    Step1: Lk and discuss
    Ask students t lk at the picture n the hme page and answer the teacher's questins:
    (1) What d yu knw abut the buildings in the pht?
    Suggested answers: The building is the Palace f Westminster, the hme f the UK gvernment. The twer is cmmnly knwn as Big Ben, althugh that is actually the name f the bell inside. The bridge is Westminster Bridge.
    (2) What traditins f that city/cuntry d yu knw abut?
    Suggested answers: Lndn has a famus traditin called "Changing f the Guard". This happens at Buckingham Palace, the hme f the queen. The guards f the palace are changed fr new guards. They wear special red unifrms with tall black hats. There are many ther traditins in the UK such as drinking tea, playing cricket, and eating fish and chips.
    (3) Why is it imprtant t prtect histric buildings and cultural traditins?
    Suggested answers: It is imprtant t prtect histric buildings and cultural traditins because they are a recrd f ur shared histry and tell us a lt abut wh we are as a cuntry and peple.

    Step 2
    Intrduce Qufu t students.
    D yu knw Qufu?
    Have yu ever been there?
    What d yu knw abut it?
    Qufu is a twn in Shandng Prvince, lcated abut 2 hurs by bus frm the prvincial capital Jinan. Famus as the birthplace f Cnfucius, its Cnfucius related sites are declared a UNESCO Wrld Heritage Site.
    Step 3
    Accrding t the students' familiarity with Cnfucius and related infrmatin, the teacher cllects sme backgrund materials and language materials in advance t supplement the necessary backgrund knwledge fr the students.
    Intrduce the tpic f histric sites in Qufu by activating students' wn knwledge and warm up fr the activities which fllw.
    Temple f Cnfucius
    The mst famus and largest temple hnuring the great sage, it is als a UNESCO Wrld Heritage Site.
    It cvers 16,000 square metres and has 460 rms. The main part cnsists f nine curtyards with several gates.
    Dacheng Hall stands at the centre and is the principal place fr ffering sacrifices t Cnfucius.
    Kng Family Mansin
    Lcated t the east f the Temple f Cnfucius, this was the histrical hme f the descendants f Cnfucius frm where they managed sites and ceremnies in Qufu. Tday it is a museum.
    Cemetery f Cnfucius
    This is where Cnfucius and his descendants are buried.
    There are mre than 10,000 f them, buried here ver 2,000 years.
    The cemetery has had many renvatins and extensins in its histry.
    Step 4
    Practise listening fr detailed infrmatin.
    Students cmplete activity 1 in grups with pictures.If the students can't read the English name f the building crrectly, the teacher shuld give them help in time.
    While-listening
    Step 5
    Ask the students t brwse activity 2, predict the listening cntent and understand the tasks t be cmpleted.
    The teacher asks the students t remember while listening and pay special attentin t the cntent related t Cnfucius.
    Next, the teacher plays the cnversatin between William and Xia. The students cmplete the frm f activity 2 and discuss the answers in pairs.
    Then the teacher checks the answers.
    Suggested answers:
    William:
    Cnfucius is ne f his favurite philsphers.
    He was a wise man.
    He lived ver 2,500 years ag.
    Xia Kng:
    Cnfucius has ver 3 millin descendants.
    He was a great educatr and had many ideas abut educatin.

    Step 6
    Leads the students t read the tpic requirements f activity 3, and prmpts the students t nt nly judge whether the cntent given in the sentence is mentined in the listening prcess.
    Listen again and decide whether these statements are true (T), false (F), r nt mentined (NM).

    Step 7
    Ask students t read the sentences and chse frm several chices.
    Plays the tape a secnd time. Accrding t the listening cmprehensin task required by the tpic, students can capture key infrmatin while listening.
    Tell students t make summary ntes when necessary.
    Students cmplete activity 3. Teachers and students check the answers.

    Step 8
    Leads the students t read and learn listening strategies fr English idims.
    Students can be asked t give sme examples f English idims that they are familiar with, and they can als share their wn examples with students t enhance their perceptual understanding f English idims and t understand the relatinship between idims and histry, culture and language habits.
    It is als apprpriate t make a cmparisn between English and Chinese, s that students can intuitively feel the similarities and differences in language expressin and cultural habits f the tw thrugh cultural cmparisn, and als prvide a fundatin and demnstratin fr the fllwing equivalent Chinese wrds.
    Ask students t write dwn the English idims that are used in the cnversatin. Explain their meanings and think abut sme Chinese equivalents.
    Step 9
    Students are asked t discuss in pairs and cmplete the frm fr activity 4.
    The teacher can play the recrding again (r the whle recrding, r just the related parts f the three idims), and the students can recrd the meaning f the idims as they listen.
    Then ask the students t discuss the Chinese equivalent wrds and try t analyze the similarities and differences in language expressin and cultural habits.
    Suggested answers:

    Step 10
    Activate students' wn cultural knwledge and encurage sharing f persnal experiences.
    What d yu knw abut Cnfucius' ideas n educatin? Think f tw r three examples. What else d yu knw abut Cnfucius and his philsphy?
    (1) Educatin was ne f Cnfucius' cre values. He believed learning abut the past wuld help us knw the future.
    (2) He als thught educatin helped ur cnfidence which wuld help bring peace and prsperity.
    (3) He als thught it was imprtant t use and apply what we have learnt in ur educatin.
    Step 11
    Think abut a histric site that yu have visited, and give an intrductin t its histry and imprtance.
    Suggested answers: I visited the Mga Caves with my family recently. They are famus fr their amazing paintings and statues. They were cnstructed ver many dynasties and are an imprtant recrd f traditin and belief in China during that time.
