4 Fun Ways To Spend A Summer Day At The Beach Kite-Flying on Long Beach, Washington
The beach at Long Beach is a perfect spot for flying kites. For starters, the beach is long, wide and relatively flat. More importantly, because the town sits on a peninsula (半岛) in the southwest corner of the state, wind can always provide ideal conditions for keeping kites in the sky. Kite-flying in these parts is so famous that Washington State International Kite Festival is organized here every year.
Crabbing in Cape Cod Bay, Massachusetts
For a quieter experience, however, take the family to the calmer beaches along Cape Cod Bay, and be sure to bring a tool to dig for crabs that hide in the sand. Though the crabs that can be found here aren't necessarily meaty, kids and grown-ups love the process of looking for breathing holes and digging for treasure.
Exploring sand hills at Silver Lake, Michigan
Beaches along lakes are just as interesting as ocean beaches, especially when they come with sand hills waiting to be explored. Such is the case with the Silver Lake Sand Hills. The area is famous for the only hills east of Utah to allow motorized vehicles in summer, which means they are a favorite spot for families with kids old enough to speed around on Go-Karts(卡丁车).Surf-fishing along Playalinda Beach, Florida
You don't have to head out on a boat to fish from the ocean; at least not when the family is vacationing near Playalinda Beach. This stretch of shoreline is popular in fishing circles as destination for surf-fishing. Fishing is best 2 hours before or after high tide (潮水).
21. Where can a family interested in catching crabs go?
A. Long Beach, Washington. B. Cape Cod Bay, Massachusetts.
C. Silver Lake, Michigan. D. Playalinda, Florida.
22. Long Beach is a perfect spot for flying kites because .
A. it is an island to the northeast of the state
B. a Kite Festival is organized there every year
C. there are lots of sand hills on the beach there
D. the location of the town leads to ideal wind conditions
23. In which part of a magazine is the article probably taken from?

At 15, Luca Patuelli landed himself in a hopeless situation when his skating days came to a stop. A leg operation --- just one of 16 operations he went through to deal with a neuromuscular ( 神 经 肌 肉 的 ) condition made standing on skateboard painful. "Both my favorite activity and the way I got around were taken away," says Patuelli, who grew up in Maryland. Then one day a friend took him to a break-dancing competition. "It was the coolest thing I'd ever seen," says the now 35-year-old. "I ended up dropping my crutches (拐杖) and doing what I called super push-up", with his hands planted, he raised his body and let his legs stay in midair. "The crowd went crazy. The cheering made me realize I didn't have to dance like them; I only had to dance like me."
In 2004, Patuelli started making waves in many international competitions, showing his talents in France, Canada ( he now lives in Montreal), and California; he also created moves for music videos and even landed a Cirque du Soleil audition (试演). Along the way, Patuelli, also known as Lazylegz, met differently-abled dancers and came up with an idea: "Create an all-star team to compete, perform, and spread message about what we can do."
In 2007, he formed ILL-Abilities, a global group of dancers. Current members include Redouan "Redo" AitChitt from the Netherlands, born without a right arm, and Samuel "Samuka" Lima from Brazil, whose right leg was cut after getting cancer.
In addition to wowing other breakers, Patuelli's team (which has toured Mexico, Poland, Rwanda and beyond) performs what he calls "motivational entertainment" --- a mix of dancing, discussions, and teaching --- for everyone from elementary schoolers to old people. Patuelli says, "We get people moving and thinking about how to make society more accessible. I think of us as a group of superheroes with different powers --- the X-Men of dance!"
24. What did Patuelli think of the break-dancing competition his friend took him to?
A. It brought his skating days to a stop. B. It was an eye-opening experience.

25. How was Patuelli in 2004?
A. He paid his attention to local events. B. He worked himself way too hard.
C. He was quite a high-achiever. D. He had ups and downs.
26. What can be learned about ILL-Abilities?
A. The members have cancer.
B. The members have to pass an audition.
C. The members have physical disabilities.

Ride-sharing services are thought to help to reduce pollution since fewer people use private vehicles and cause carbon dioxide. However, a new study has found that these services result in much more pollution than other kinds of private and public transportation. Ride-sharing trips also draw passengers away from more environment-friendly methods of travel, like public transportation, walking or biking, the study found.
Several studies in recent years have suggested that ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft can worsen traffic problems in cities, which continue to have high rates of private vehicle ownership.
The new study, carried out by the non-profit group Union of Concerned Scientists, represents an attempt to center on how ride-sharing services affect pollution. The research examined the effects of ride-sharing services on seven of American's largest cities. Overall, the researchers reported that ride-sharing trips now "result in about 69 percent more climate pollution on average than the trips they replace". The study notes that the same passengers
could have chosen to travel by bus, train, bike, scooter (小型摩托车) or on foot.
One of the big reasons they give for this result is that ride-sharing vehicles are often driven with no passengers in the car. This happens when drivers are either waiting for rider requests, are on the way to pick up passengers or are driving between pickups. This situation, known as "deadheading" takes up about 42 percent of the ride-sharing driving activity, the study found. The researchers said that "deadheading" results in about 50 percent more carbon dioxide than one person driving in a private vehicle.
The study urges services like Uber and Lyft to increase the number of electric vehicles on the road and to improve connections to public transportation centers. The two companies already operate businesses that offer electric scooters and bikes and have begun to include public transportation information in their systems. In some cities, they have also promoted vehicle electrification.
28. According to the text, it is generally thought that car-sharing services .
A. are environmentally-friendly B. guarantee a healthier lifestyle
C. greatly cut down travel expenses D. lower the price of private cars
29. What is the biggest cause of more ride-sharing pollution?
A. The unfamiliar ride-sharing trips. B. The old way vehicles travel.
C. The huge number of passengers. D. The so-called "deadheading".
30. What can we say about the study?
A. It is opposed by ride-sharing services. B. It is actually of practical significance.
C. It requires improving in the long term. D. It earns much money for Uber and Lyft.
31. From which part of a newspaper is the text most probably taken?
A. Travel. B. Technology. C. Environment. D. Economy.
D
Diseases, coronavirus for example, spread in many ways. An infected person can cough or sneeze on someone nearby, or they can spread germs through a handshake. But sometimes we pick up germs indirectly. A sick person might leave behind bacteria or viruses when they touch a door handle. But what if those handles could clean themselves?
Two teenagers from Hong Kong asked themselves the same question. Now they've developed a door handle that can kill germs on contact. The idea is simple. Every time the door is opened, the movement creates power that starts a germ-killing reaction on the handle. In lab tests, their system killed about 99.8 percent of the germs that they spread onto lab dishes covered with their material.
Research by others has shown that door handles in public areas are often home to lots of bacteria and viruses, notes 17-year-old Sum Ming ("Simon") Wong. He and schoolmate Kin Pong (Michael) Li, 18, wanted to design a covering for door handles that would kill germs.
After doing some research, they learned that a mineral called titanium dioxide (二氧化钛) is known to kill bacteria. It's already used in many products, from paints to desserts. To make their covering, the teenagers made the mineral into a very fine powder.
Titanium dioxide kills bacteria best when lit by ultraviolet (紫外线的) light, says Simon.UV light is found in sunlight. But UV light does not naturally shine on indoor handles or any used at night, so the teenagers light their door handle from within.
To make sure the light reaches the coated surface(涂层), the teenagers made their door handle out of clear glass. Each end fits into a bracket (托架). Inside one of the brackets is a strong light-emitting diode (LED). From it comes UV light.
And here's the interesting part: The power that makes the UV light shine comes from opening and closing the door. The power from the door is then carried by wire to the LED inside the door handle. The door handle system, Michael and Simon say, might cost no more than about $13 (about 81 yuan) to build.
32. The ways diseases spread are mentioned at the beginning of the text to .
A. explain how most diseases are spread indirectly
B. remind readers of the importance of cleaning their hands
C. explain how to kill bacteria or viruses effectively
D. introduce a new invention that prevents diseases from spreading
33. Michael and Simon's door handle .
A. is too expensive for ordinary families
B. is powered by the movement of its users
C. works better at night than in the daytime
D. is made of a metal that can take in UV light
34. The LED is placed inside the brackets to .
A. supply enough power to the handle system
B. produce titanium dioxide to kill bacteria
C. provide UV light to help titanium dioxide work better
D. direct the UV light in sunlight to the coated surface
35. What is the author's attitude toward Michael and Simon's door handle system?
A. Cautious B. Critical C. Enthusiastic D. Disappointed

根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。
Cold Weather Helps Your Body
We think of winter as cold and flu season, but the chilly temperatures have powerful biological upsides too.
Boosts your brain
36 Studies have found that people perform some cognitive (认知的) tasks (such as making decisions) better when the temperature is cooler. Research has also shown that people less tend to tackle complex tasks in the summer than in the winter. The brain requires glucose
(葡萄糖) to function, but the body uses more of it in warmer temperatures to keep the body
cool. That leaves less available fuel for reasoning and remembering tasks.
Burns calories
When its cold, your body works harder to keep your core temperature, which is typically about 98.6 degrees. 37 So tie up your boot: A recent study of 53 people showed that participants burned 34 percent more calories when they hiked in 14-to 23-degree temperatures than they did hiking on 50-degree days.
Encourages better sleep
Your body's core temperature drops when you're trying to sleep. This process can take up to two hours in the summer, but it's much faster in winter. 38
Fights infections
Yes, you might get more colds during the winter. However, studies have shown that the immune ( 免 疫 的 ) system can be activated by colder temperatures, which improves our ability to fight infections. That said, the flu virus becomes stronger in cold, dry air, and time
spent indoors increases your chance of infection. 39
Strengthens your heart
In cold weather, the heart works harder to pump blood and keep the body's core temperature. That's a good thing. 40 Once you warm up, you may be able to go farther than when it's hot outside. But if you are at risk for heart disease, be careful when exercising outdoors in the cold; the extra stress can cause problems.
A. Any activity can leave your heart driving.
B. Plus, with darker mornings, you naturally sleep later.
C. Colder temperatures can help you think more clearly.
D. Exercising in the winter makes heart muscles stronger.
E. Storing up too much ordinary fat can endanger our health.
F. Our bodies use a large amount of energy to keep us warm.
G. To reduce risk, get your annual flu shot, wash your hands frequently.

Thus a story-telling tradition was 47 in our family. Ever since that night, they seemed not to be able to sleep without hearing one of my 48 stories. Of all the things I do for my 49 , my storytelling is what they love most. It has created a special 50 between us. And they find that their day isn't 51 without one of my stories, and so do I.
When I see how 52 my storytelling is in their lives, I come to realize how much our television and video-oriented (以视频为导向的) society has 53 in terms of the personal
connections that storytelling brings. Before the 54 of television, computers and smartphones, a family's 55 was built around storytelling. This oral ( 口述的) tradition
was 56 from generation to generation, and many of the stories we have today originated from this tradition until someone finally 57 them down.
Storytelling is used as a creative way to 58 for me. During the storytelling, I forget about the pressure of the day and enjoy the 59 time I can spend with my children. I hope that other parents can gain 60 from storytelling, too.
