Just like the rest of your body, your taste buds* will never be the same. You might hate carrots or onions when you're a kid and love them when you're an adult. But when you're a kid, do you know your tongue is changing more than it ever will again?
If you look at your tongue, you can see lots of little bumps all over it. Those aren't your taste buds. They're called papillae. Your taste buds are actually inside many of these papillae. These taste buds send signals to your brain when food touches the papillae. The taste buds' job is to pick out the different flavors (sweet, sour, salty, bitter and others) so your brain can put all the tastes together and find out if a food has a pleasant taste or an awful taste.
____▲____. The same chocolate cake might taste sweeter to you than to your mom, and her coffee tastes more bitter. Kids seem to really like sweet foods and really dislike bitter foods. As you grow, that love for sweetness goes away slowly, and flavors like salty, sour, and spicy become more attractive.
As adults age, their taste buds get weaker and can pick out fewer flavors. The sense of smell to one's enjoyment of food also slowly loses its sharpness. As a result, food starts to taste blander*. Do you think that may help explain why some adults like food with stronger flavors?
Where you eat and who you eat with is also important. Happy memories of eating the dish with her family might explain why your grandma loves cream-of-broccoli soup, even if you can't stand it. And unpleasant memories related to a food might make someone turn up their nose at something you love.
And of course, some people just like certain flavors and don't like others. Keep trying new foods and keep tasting old ones——you'll find plenty to try.
38.The writer gives the example in Paragraph 1 to show ____________.
A.the kinds of taste buds B.the changes of taste buds
C.the way taste buds work D.the function of taste buds
39.Which of the following can be put into the _____▲____ in Paragraph 3?
A.Kids seem to have fewer taste buds than adults do.
B.Kids' tastes are deeply influenced by their parents.
C.Kids taste sweet and bitter more strongly than adults do.
D.Kids like to have food with strong tastes when they grow.
40.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.People's opinions on the food stay the same.
B.Food tastes stronger to the old than to the adult.
C.Little bumps on your tongue are called taste buds.
D.Your experience may decide how you like the food.
41.What does the writer want to tell us?
A.We'd better accept the flavors we dislike.
B.It's important for us to know about flavors.
C.People usually enjoy foods with one certain flavor.
D.We can try new flavors and find more possible likes.
D
One morning, my master rode me for a long journey to go on business with John. I was put into the dog-cart* which I always liked to go, for it was so light and the high wheels ran along so pleasantly. There had been lots of rain, and the wind was high. Then we came across a wooden bridge. The river banks were high, and the bridge went across just level. The master drove gently, so it was no matter.
When we got to the town, I had a good lunch. As the master's business took him a long time, we started for home late. Then the wind was much higher. The master said, "I've never been out in such a storm.I wish we were well out of this wood."
"Yes, sir," said John. "it would be rather terrible if one branch came down upon us." The words were scarcely out of his mouth when there was a groan, and a crack, and a splitting sound. A tree fell right across the road just before us. I was frightened, stopped and trembled.
"That was a near touch," said my master. "What's to be done now?"
"Well, sir, we can't drive over that tree. We have to go back to the four crossways. That'll be six miles before we get round to the wooden bridge again."
By the time we got to the bridge it was very dark. The water was over the middle; but as that happened sometimes when the floods were out, master did not stop. But the moment my feet touched the first part of the bridge, I felt sure there was something wrong. I made a dead stop. "Go on, Beauty," said my master, he gave me a sharp cut; I jumped, but I did not go forward.
"There's something wrong, sir," said John. He tried to lead me forward.“Come on, Beauty, what's the matter?"
Just then a man on the other side shouted. "Hey! Halloo! Stop!"
“What's wrong?" shouted my master.
"The bridge is broken in the middle. If you come on you'll be drowned into the river."
"Thank God!" said my master.
"Thank You Beauty!" said John, and gently turned me round by the river side.
For a good while neither the master nor John spoke, then the master said in a serious voice.“Black Beauty saved us."
When we finally returned home, John took me to the stable*. Oh, what a good supper he gave me that night!
