Bertie knew there was something in the wind. His mother had been sad in recent days, not sick, just strangely sad. The lion had just lain down beside him, his head warm on Bertie's feet, when Father cleared his throat and began, "You'll soon be eight, Bertie. A boy needs a proper education. We've found the right place for you, a school near Salisbury in England."

His heart filled with a terrible fear, all Bertie could think of was his white lion. "But the lion." he cried, "What about the lion?"

"I'm afraid there's something else I have to tell you," his father said. Looking across at Bertie's mother, he took a deep breath. Then he told Bertie he had met a circus owner from France, who was over in Africa looking for lions to buy. He would come to their farm in a few days.

"No! You can't send him to a circus!" said Bertie. "People will come to see him. He'll be shut up behind bars. I promised him he never would be. And they will laugh at him. He'd rather die. Any animal would!" But as he looked across the table at them, he knew their minds were quite made up.

Bertie felt completely betrayed. He waited until he heard his father's deep breathing next door. With his white lion at his heels, he crept(蹑手蹑脚地移动)downstairs, took down his father's rifle(步枪)and stepped out into the night. He ran and ran till his legs could run no more. As the sun came up over the grassland, he climbed to the top of a hill and sat down, his arms round the lion's neck. The time had come.

"Be wild now", he whispered. "You've got to be wild. Don't ever come home. All my life I'll think of you. I promise I will." He buried his head in the lion's neck. Then, Bertie climbed down the hill and walked away.

When he looked back, the lion was still sitting there watching him; but then he stood up, yawned, stretched, and sprang down after him. Bertie shouted at, him, but he kept coming. He threw sticks. He threw stones. Nothing worked.

There was only one thing left to do. With tears filling his eyes and his mouth, he lifted the rifle to his shoulder and fired over the lion's head.

    4. Bertie's mother was sad probably because she_________.

    A. had been seriously ill recently B. knew selling the lion would upset Bertie

    C. knew Bertie would hate to go to England D. had decided to send Bertie to school

    5. The underlined word "they" in Para. 4 probably refers to_________.

    A. other animals B. circus owners C. Bertie's parents D. some audience

    6. In the last paragraph, the boy lifted the rifle to_________.

    A. protect himself from the lion B. kill the lion out of fear

    C. threaten the lion back to the wild D. show his anger towards his father

    7. The passage intends to show that_________.

    A. people and animals can be faithful to each other B. parents are sometimes cruel to their children

    C. animal-hunting is popular in Africa D. animals usually lead a miserable life in circuses

    C

For centuries, fishers in Narrangansett have fished in the waters of the northwestern Atlantic for herrings (鲱鱼). But as climate change warms the world’s seas, the herrings are disappearing at the southern end of their range and turning up more often at its northern edges. A study shows that concentrations of marine (海洋的) species populations have been shifting away from the equator (赤道) and toward the poles during the course of the past century. These movements could wreak havoc on food webs and endanger the livelihoods (生计) of fishers.

The tropical (热带的) water at the equator is well-known for having the richest diversity of marine life on Earth. The number of marine species naturally decreases gradually as you head towards the poles. Ecologists have assumed this global pattern has remained stable over recent centuries until now. Our recent study found the ocean around the equator has already become too hot for many species to survive, and that global warming is responsible. And as species flee to cooler water towards the poles, it’s likely to have deep impacts on marine ecosystems.

Losing species in tropical ecosystems means ecological adaptation to environmental changes is reduced, potentially damage ecosystem persistence. In subtropical ecosystems, species richness is increasing. This means there’ll be species invaders, and new competitive relationships. This could result in ecosystem collapse in which species go extinct and ecosystem services (such as food supplies) are permanently changed.

One way is to reduce our emissions aggressively. Other opportunities could also help safeguard biodiversity and hopefully minimize the worst impacts of it shifting away from the equator. Designing climate-smart reserves could further protect biodiversity from future changes. For example, reserves for marine life could be placed where the climate will be stable over the foreseeable future. We should take action without delay.

    8. What does the underlined phrase “wreak havoc on” probably mean in Paragraph 1?

    A. Clarify B. Classify. C. Destroy. D. Purify.

    9. What can be learnt from the second paragraph?

ASome species move to water in lower temperature.

    B. More marine species exist at the poles than the equator.

    C. The subtropical water has the most diverse marine species.

    D. The global pattern of the ecosystem remains unchanged now.

    10. What is the main idea of the third paragraph?

    A. The increase of species in subtropical ecosystem.

    B. The decline of ecological changes in the ocean.

    C. The temporary changes in ecosystem services.

    D. The effects of species’ immigration on marine ecosystem.

    11. What is the author’s purpose in writing this article?

ATo inform readers of the reduction of marine species.

    B. To appeal to readers to protect marine biodiversity.

    C. To predict the future of the marine ecosystem.

    D. To explain the reasons for global warming.

    D

With over 4.1 billion people or around 55 percent of the world’s population, living in urban areas, cities and towns worldwide are getting increasingly jammed. In addition to spending hours stuck in traffic, residents are also exposed to high air pollution levels caused by  transportation emissions(排放). Now, Saudi Arabia hopes to overturn urban living with “The  Line”—a futuristic city designed around nature, without cars, roads and crowded places!

The totally different city, announced on January 10, 2021, is the brainchild of Saudi Crown Prince(王储)Mohammed bin Salman(MBS).Located in Neom, a 10, 000-square-mile high-tech planned development on the Red Sea coast. The Line will be the base of MBS’s Saudi Vision 2030. The strategic plan aims to diversify Saudi Arabia’s oil-dependent economy into other fields, like            tourism, and create exciting job opportunities for its citizens.

The 105-mile-long city, expected to cost between $100 billion and $200 billion, will be built along a straight line and comprise several self-sustaining communities. To ensure all services are within a short, five-minute walk, each community will feature a three-layer infrastructure(基础设施)

There will be no cars or roads on the top “pedestrian layer”, so residents can freely walk and bike in the surrounding green spaces. The second “service layer”, will include all essential daily services, such as schools, medical clinics, leisure facilities, and grocery stores. The third “spine layer” will house ultra-high-speed transportation and autonomous vehicles transporting residents across communities in less than 20 minutes. The entire city will be powered with renewable clean energy sources such as solar and wind, and possibly even hydrogen

If all goes according to the plan, construction of this groundbreaking, complex infrastructure project will start before the end of 2021. In addition to providing up to a million residents with a clean and stress-free living environment, the Line is expected to create 380, 000 new jobs, promote economic diversification, and contribute a shocking $48 billion to Saudi Arabia’s Gross Domestic Product(GDP)by 2030. More importantly, MBS believes it will provide governments worldwide a blueprint for how people and planet can co-exist in harmony.

    12. Where can you purchase a bike if living in The Line?

    A. Pedestrian layer. B. Service layer.

    C. Spine layer. D. The green spaces.

    13. Which of the following can best describe the project of The Line?

    A. Widely-accepted. B. Ill-considered.

    C. Risk-taking. D. Mind-blowing.

    14. What does MBS think is the most important effect of The Line?

    A. To facilitate Saudi economic diversification.

    B. To offer a model for nature-man integration.

    C. To boost the government’s finances.

    D. To create more job opportunities.

    15. What might be the best title of the text?

    A. Saudi Vision for Environmental Protection

    B. The Construction of The Line Is Underway

    C. MBSAn Influential Leader of Saudi Arabia

    D. MBS’ Vision of a Futuristic Zero Carbon City

My father is the man I respect most. Strict as he may be, but he never fails to show his care and considerate. Once I broke a neighbor window. Seeing nobody around, I ran away immediately. When Dad came home, he noticed my uneasiness and asked me what has happened. I could only tell him a truth. 52【答案】My Favorite Hands-on Course

In response to the call of nationwide labor education, a series of hands-on courses were launched last term in our school, ranging from planting vegetables to making traditional handicrafts.

Sewing is one of my favorite courses, where I obtained a fundamental knowledge of essential life skills such as sewing a button, knitting a scarf, and making a cushion by operating the sewing machine. It was surely a rewarding and fulfilling experience, which not only enriched our extracurricular life but also helped us acquire practical basic working capabilities for livelihood and form the good habit of labouring.

The hands-on courses have won wide popularity among students and exerted a positive effect on the personal growth of everyone involved. If possible, an exhibition could be held to demonstrate students’ well-designed works and display their creativity.
