    This past Columbus Day, my husband and I went fishing with some friends on their boat while our 10 and 8-year-olds were in school. We left the house all at the same time, about 7 am. My children walked to and from school every day and we knew they were OK for a couple hours by themselves any-way so we told them to go inside after school and we would be home around 4 pm

    The adults decided to go fishing offshore: we live on the Gulf Coast, since it was a beautiful day in the normally still very humid (湿热的) Texas fall. Even worse, we were out of cellphone service, and 911 wasn't working, and we didn't have a radio so we were stuck waiting for someone to come by.We were out there until10 pm. At about 7 pm, when it was getting dark, my 10-year-old girl thought something might be wrong so she walked to each house on the street until someone answered the door and asked them what they should do. This was how we were found.

    Talking with that neighbor the next day, I never took such pride in my children. This neighbor explained to me how calm both my children were when explaining the situation and how impressed they were with my children seeking help, even though they didn't know these particular neighbors. I never doubled them for a minute, though next time we go fishing, we'll monitor the gas more carefully.

    Friendships are very important to teenagers. Friendships provide teenagers with chances to develop social skills. Teenagers can learn how to end a fight and still remain friends. Friends provide fun and excitement for teenagers through games. Friends also give advice to one another. Teenagers talk through lots of problems with their friends. Friendships also provide help during times of difficulty. It is helpful for teenagers to have a friend who is going through the same situations.

    What happens when youth don’t have friends? Teenagers without friends are usually more lonely and unhappy. They will have lower levels of grades and lower confidence. As they get older, they are more apt to drop out of school.

    As kids move into their teenager years, friends and friendships play an important role in teenager life as a way of getting personal enjoyment and social learning.

    Most teenagers will have friends who parents either like or dislike. However, it is important to keep in mind that one way teenagers can truly learn how to choose and keep friends is through personal experience, which is sure to have some mistakes. Parents should not be too hard on teenagers when they choose friends who are not good enough or when their friendship fails. Remember, every social experience helps teenagers to learn about different people and improve social skills.

    As parents, it is important to encourage friendships among teenagers. However, it is important to know who your teenager’s friends are and to communicate openly about changes in friendships with your teenagers.

    When it comes to generation gap (代沟), we usually think of different tastes in music,  or games. But now the generation gap is handwriting. After one teacher in Tennessee discovered that she had students who couldn’t read what she was writing on the board,  she posted it on the Internet saying that handwriting should be taught in schools.

    Others who are against it argue that handwriting has become out of time in our modern world. Typed words have become a main form of communication. Once a practical skill,  handwriting is no longer used by most of Americans. It is no longer taught in schools, and some claim that the time that it would take to teach it could be put to better use, for example,  by teaching the technical skills.

    But even in today’s world there are still plenty of reasons to pick up a pen and write on the paper. In America, signatures (签字) by hand are still often requested, for example,  signing for a registered letter and buying a house. And original signatures are much more difficult to fake (伪造).

    There is also strong evidence that writing by hand is good for the mind. It makes a different part of the brain active and improves fine moving skills in young children. People are also more likely to remember what they write by hand than what they type, and the process of writing by hand has been shown to cause ideas. Not only those, studies have shown that kids who write by hand learn to read and spell earlier than those who don’t.

    Yes, we live in a modern world, but we live in a modern world of basic and important values.
