(2022·湖南株洲)My father was good at playing the guitar. He was one of the best guitar players in our town. He could not read music, but if he heard a tune a few times, he could play it. When he was young, he was a member of a small country music band.
Dad loved to take out his guitar and play for the family. We three children: Trisha, Monte and I, would often sing along. We often sang songs such as Tennessee Waltz, Harbor Lights and the well-known song Silver Bells. During every Christmas, “Silver Bells, Silver Bells, it’s Christmas time in the city...would ring throughout the house. Another song King of the Wild Frontier was a favorite song for the family. It was a song in the Walt Disney program: Davey Crocket. Dad only had to hear the song twice before he learned it well enough to play it. He knew we enjoyed the song and the program and would often get out the guitar after the program was over. Our house was full of music and laughter.
Dad loved to give pleasure to his family. We enjoyed singing and hearing him play. He liked that.
He was always there, sacrificing(付出)his time and efforts to see that his family had enough in their life. Nobody played the guitar like my father. He could touch your soul with his music. (2022·湖南株洲)Japan recently showed the world’s first Dual-Mode Vehicle (DMV), a mini-bus-like train which runs both on roads, like a bus, and on rails, like a train.
It looks just like a bus but it definitely makes an impression in terms of practical use. It runs with normal rubber tires (轮胎) on the road. But when it needs to become the train mode, the front tires will be lifted up, and the back wheels stay down to push the vehicle. The change from bus to train takes only about 15 seconds.
“The DMV can work as a bus and run onto the railway as well,” Shigeki Miura, CEO of As a Coast Railway, told Reuters. “We expect it to help many old people in the countryside. We also hope it can attract tourists with its many beautiful colors.”
It can carry up to 21 passengers and run at a speed of 60 km/h in train mode, and up to 100 km/h as a bus.
Shigeki Miura also told the news reporter confidently that the special vehicle could help small towns like Kaiyo with an aging and shrinking (减少的) population. In these places, it is more and more difficult for conventional (传统的) transportation companies to make money. In the near future, many more DMVs will connect several towns, covering part of the coast of Shikoku island and offering passengers pretty seaside views.

(2022·湖南株洲)Tomatoes are the most popular crop among American home gardeners. The smell of homegrown tomatoes will make you think of lovely summers. An advantage of growing your own tomatoes is variety (品种丰富). If you visit a garden center, you will find seeds (种子) and small starter plants for yellow tomatoes, purple tomatoes, huge tomatoes, and even very small tomatoes. There are kinds you simply can’t find at a local food store.
Garden writer Jessica Damiano loves tomatoes. In fact, she created and hosted The Great Long Island Tomato competition while working for a local newspaper in New York. The celebrations of people who love tomatoes or “tomatophiles” continued for 13 years. One tomato that was entered into the competition weighed more than 2.3 kilos.
Damiano also got to meet and speak with the competitive tomato growers who raised the winning fruits. It did not take long for her to notice some common practices among them.
First, start seeds early indoors and then plant them into larger containers before moving them outdoors. Plant them deeply into the soil, about 30 cm above the ground. This will produce strong plants.
Then, give the tomatoes plenty of water, soft soil, heat and light. It is best to grow tomatoes in a place that receives at least six hours of sunlight each day. Remember to remove weeds (杂草) because this can protect tomatoes from diseases and pests, giving the plants enough nutrients to produce fruit.
Last but not least, tomatoes grow best in soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 6.8. If the pH reading is lower than 6.0, you can add about 2 cups of lime into the soil for each plant. Make sure to mix it deep into the soil.
If you want to grow really big tomatoes, try those tips from expert growers and you may have a big harvest!

(2021·湖南株洲)Food is a kind of culture. It’s a nation’s memory and pride. The famous French baguette (长棍面包) is one of their memories and prides. French people think it should be protected. “It is much more than just a kind of bread. It is a symbol of France—it’s like the Eiffel Tower,” said Dominigue Anract, president of the Confederation of French Bakers.
So it’s no wonder that a group of French cooks want the baguette to become a form of intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) listed by UNESCO. French culture leaders have given a suggestion to the country’s president.
UNESCO’s intangible heritage list aims to protect culture from the influence of the world. Cooks in France believe that if the baguette is on the list, it will be better protected. The list already includes Belgian beer and Neapolitan pizza.
The baguette has been protected by law since 1993. The law says the bread must be made with only the following things: water, wheat flour, yeast and salt. The flour should be fermented (发酵) for I5 to 20 hours at a certain temperature. This strict rule makes the food special and delicious.
Six million baguettes are sold every day in France. However, as supermarkets continue to take over, tens of thousands of shops have closed since the 1950s. “The first thing we ask of a child is to go buy a baguette,” Anract said. “We think it important to protect these habits.”

(2021·湖南株洲)If you’ve ever walked through fog (雾), you might have noticed that your skin and hair get wet. This is because fog is made of tiny water drops. Scientists are helping people collect these drops to make drinking water.
In some towns, there is no fresh water. People there have to use trucks to carry fresh water. It is expensive.
Since rain falls to the ground, it can easily be collected into tanks (水箱). But the water drops that make up fog don’t hit the ground. Instead, they float (漂浮) in the air. To turn fog into water, you have to catch the water drops.
A fog catcher is made of nets with two posts. The nets are usually set up on a hilltop. As fog passes by, the nets catch the water drops. The drops run down the nets and into channels. The channels lead the water into large tanks where it can be stored. A fog catcher can collect 10,000 liters of water a day. Scientists have helped set up fog catchers for towns in Chile, Nepal and Mexico.
Fog catchers are a great way for people in small and lonely towns to have their own fresh water. Centuries before scientists created fog-catching nets, nature was making fog into water on its own. As fog passed through the mountains, large leaves got the drops just like the nets do. People learned to drink the water collected on the leaves. Thanks to modern fog catchers, enough water can be made for a whole town!

(2021·湖南株洲)“Mom! I found one! I found a rock!”
I heard those words again and again last summer as I sat by the window, which faces a park in the small town where I live.
The Kindness Rocks Project, which was started a few years ago by a mom in Massachusetts, has spread around the world. Kids, families, and people of all ages are taking part in painting rocks, hiding rocks, and finding painted rocks all over the place. Some post photos of the rocks on social media (传媒), and others simply move the rocks for someone else to find. Some take the rocks home and then replace them with new ones that they created and hid.
Nine-year-old twins Harry and Hannah DeVrieze have painted hundreds of rocks with their parents. Most evenings, the family and their small dog walk around with a wagon (运货车) full of rocks that they hide as they walk.
“It’s a fun family activity,” Hannah says.
“We will do it in the winter too,” Hannah says.
Ben Burinsky, age nine, and his brother, Luke, age seven, were visiting relatives (亲戚) when they found their first painted rock in a park. They were so excited that they went home and painted their own rocks, then hid them for others to find.
“My boys loved finding the rock in the park, especially since it was a superhero,” their mother, Judy Burinsky, says. “I love how something so small can bring a smile to my children’s faces. In return, they learn the value of giving back to others.”
Kadyn Kinney, age nine, and his seven-year-old brother, Jayce, have also painted many rocks. They love to hide rocks and look for rocks with their mom and dad. When their grandmother visited, they gave her painted rocks to take home and hide in the Florida town where she lives. When asked how many rocks he has painted so far, Jayce says, “Trust me! I’ve painted more than 30.”

(2020·湖南株洲)A long time ago, my grandparents moved into a new house with 4 daughters. Because work was hard to find, Grandpa did whatever jobs he could. He and Grandma dug a garden to grow some food.
The house had a big front yard with tall trees. Grandparents planted vegetables on one side of the yard and flowers on the other side.
Everybody worked to keep the garden growing. Later, the family ate food from the garden and enjoyed the beautiful flowers.
The family grew up, and the grandchildren came. Grandparents still planted their garden. Everyone still enjoyed the food from the garden.
Years later, it became harder for grandparents to keep the garden. So they made it a little smaller. There was still much to eat from the garden and lovely flowers to enjoy.

From that time on, Grandma always believed that since Grandpa couldn't be there to help her that summer, he had sent the bees to take his place and make Grandma's little garden grow and grow. (2020·湖南株洲)An American friend has invited you to visit his family. You’ve never been to an American’s home before, what should you do? The answer is: when you’re the guest, you should just make yourself at home. That’s American hospitality(好客).
American hospitality begins at home — especially about food. Most Americans agree that good home cooking beats restaurant food. When you are invited for a meal, you might ask, “Can I bring anything?” The host will answer, “No, just yourself.” For most informal(非正式的) dinners, you can wear any comfortable clothes you like. Arrive on time, or call to tell your hosts if you can’t. During the dinner talk, guests will often praise the hostess (女主人) for the wonderful meal. Of course, the biggest praise is to eat lots of food!
When you’ve had enough, you might offer to clean the table or wash the dishes. But since you’re the guest, your hosts may not let you. Instead, they may invite everyone to move to the living room for dessert with tea or coffee. There the hosts and the guests may continue to have a talk. After about an hour’s talk, it’s time for you to leave.
If you come to an American’s home, you’d better let the hosts know ahead of time unless you’re very close friends, especially when you want to stay for a few days. Here’s a good rule for guests: Short stays are best. Even relatives, for example, their aunts, uncles or cousins, don’t usually stay for several weeks every time. While you’re staying with an American family, try to keep your living area clean and tidy. Your host family will thank you for your consideration. And they may even invite you back!
Most Americans consider themselves hospitable people, and they are proud of making guests happy.
51. What should we do when we are guests at an American’s home?
A.Bring a lot of gifts. B.Make ourselves at home. C.Stay for several weeks every time.
52. In America, when you are invited for a meal, you’d better leave the host family _____.
A.just after the meal
B.about an hour after the meal
C.about two or three hours after the meal
53. Which of the following is NOT true?
A.Most Americans think good home food is better than restaurant food.
B.In America, you can wear comfortable clothes for most informal dinners.
C.In America, you are free to come as guests without telling the hosts first.
54. The underlined word “consideration” in the fourth paragraph(段) means “_____” in Chinese.
A.体贴 B.大方 C.聪明
55. What can be the best title of the passage?
A.American Food B.American Family C.American Hospitality
(2020·湖南株洲)We touch our faces all the time, and it had never seemed to be a big problem—until COVID-19 arrived. Touching our faces—the “T-zone” of our eyes, nose and mouth—can mean giving ourselves this virus.
This is why some organizations have suggested that we should avoid touching our faces. William Sawyer, from Henry the Hand, told The Washington Post, “Just stop this simple behavior, and that would be better than any vaccine (疫苗) ever created.”
However, stopping this “simple” behavior might be harder than you think because we are used to it.
Some face-touching is an automatic reaction—like when there is an itch(痒) on your nose, you'll touch it again and again without thinking. A 2014 study found that touching your face also helps you to have less stress. For example, it's possible for you to do it when you feel embarrassed. According to Dacher Keltner, a psychologist at the University of California Berkeley, US, this action may also have a social use: When you are talking to someone, for example, touching your face means you want to talk about another thing.
Besides, it's very hard to change this face-touching “because you don't even know you're doing it”, said Sawyer.
But you're not alone. In a 2015 study, it was found that a group of medical students touched their faces about 23 times an hour-with 44 percent of the touches in the “T-zones”. That was very surprising because medical students should know better.
Since it's so hard to shake the habit, maybe the easiest way is to wash our hands more often. This way, we can be sure that our hands are safe from COVID-19.
56. The “T-zone” is formed from _____.
A.our eyes B.our nose and mouth C.our eyes, nose and mouth
57. In the second paragraph, Sawyer thinks that _____.
A.face-touching is simple and helpful
B.we should avoid touching our faces
C.face-touching may be better than vaccine
58. Dacher Keltner believes that _____.
A.face-touching may increase stress
B.face-touching may have a social use
C.face-touching may cause an itch on your face
59. The last paragraph tells us to _____.
A.wash our hands more often
B.stop the habit of touching our faces
C.ask medical students not to touch their faces
60. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Face-touching may give us COVID-19.
B.Face-touching may be very useful for us.
C.Stopping face-touching might be harder than we think.
