If you want to find a place of interest to spend your summer vacation, think about the following locations.
The Nautilus Maldives
Opened in 2019, this independent, Maldivian-owned resort (度假村) is the island nation’s only Relais & Chateaux property. It’s located off a beautiful sandy island in the Indian Ocean, which has been officially recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for its stunning coral reefs and various marine life. Splendid, oversized accommodations axe balanced with plain inners, intended to be in harmony with the surrounding natural scenery.
Six Senses Laamu, the Maldives
Sustainability lies at the core of the unique, luxurious resort in the Maldives’ isolated Laamu Atoll. The three-storied overwater buildings are constructed of local materials, which brings money to nearby island communities. Follow it up with a meal made from produce grown in the island’s gardens without using artificial chemicals and freshly caught seafood from local fishermen. Finally, treat yourself to one of the many spa treatments at the Six Senses Spa overlooking the ocean.
Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, French Polynesia
Built along a small island, the overwater buildings at the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora rise over the island’s blue waters. Inners are simple, inspired by the natural style of a traditional Polynesian village, and all have indoor-outdoor spaces with ladders for access to the lake. Choose from one of three views: beach, lake, or, our favorite, mountain.
Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara, Qatar
On a private island twenty minutes by boat from Qatar’s capital city, this resort houses the Persian Gulf’s 11 Maldivian-inspired overwater buildings on a scale only found in the Middle East. Think: two and three-bedroom units (beginning at 2, 500 square feet), each equipped with facilities like a private full-sized swimming pool.
21. What is the building feature of The Nautilus Maldives?
A. Its building material is sand. B. It is integrated with nature.
C. It is designed by UNESCO. D. Its rooms are not big enough.
22. Which resort best suits people who want organic food?
A. The Nautilus Maldives
B. Six Senses Laamu, the Maldives
C. Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara, Qatar
D. Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, French Polynesia
23. What do these four resorts have in common?
A. They are built overwater. B. They offer spa service.
C. They are on private islands. D. They adopt Polynesian style.

My memories of my father are divided into parts and shares. Alive, and then dead. Healthy, and then helpless. And further back in time, the first and most division: Present and then absent; loving, and then indifferent (漠不关心的).
He used to be a good writer and loving father. When I was a 16-year-old girl, he was fired from his company, a public, gossip-based dismissal that he would spend decades refusing responsibility for. This was the first crack that divided my relationship with him into poles of before and after. To escape his shame, he pushed away those who reminded him of it, first divorcing my mother, then alienating (疏远) my sister and I.
As an adult, my relationship with ray father was one of low expectations and high boundaries. He spent most of his time travelling. But when he died of heart failure in August, I was knocked off balance by the weight of the blow. I thought, after years of setting up delicate fences around our relationship, that I had already begun letting go. His death delivered a realization: despite years of analyzing his complicated love for me, there were pieces of my father I never understood—until I found my father’s notebooks in his cupboard.
In the notebooks, he often collected documentation: train tickets from Rome or a photograph of San Francisco’s Prescott Hotel. But what he was also doing was offering fatherly guidance, the kind I could only receive after he died. His life, in which what he had was never quite enough, was eventually exposed. In his final decade, he realized he had built a castle for himself upon sand and regret. Now in his entries, I hear his voice. “Debaleh,” I hear him say, using his pet name for me, “learn from my mistakes.”
I read these pages among my dad’s clothes, and wept. I hadn’t known that my father, too, lived with that familiar ache for new horizons in his heart, the one that can only be comforted by traveling.

The creativity TikTok stimulates allows for a broad range of content that encourages users to participate in trends that integrate their passions and hobbies. Specifically, content related to literature on TikTok has generated its own domain. Commonly referred to as “BookTok,” this side of the platform focuses on all things about books: book recommendations, tips for pleasing bookshelves and edits related to literature-based fandoms (粉丝圈).
With heightened demand for new media to comfort themselves during the pandemic period of severe challenges, many young adults have regarded literature as a form of escape. Restarting former literary passions, BookTok users have turned their attention to the app to praise the novels that have helped serve as a brief getaway to worlds within bound pages.
Through a revival of novels that shaped the childhoods of many who are now young adults, even younger generations on the app have been exposed to foundational novels in young adult literature. Along with this emphasis on nostalgic (怀旧的) fandoms, BookTok takes advantage of TikTok trends in order to attract those who may not be familiar with literature to read. The popularity of BookTok and the novels that are recommended to young adults on the app have had a direct effect on bookstores and book sales, with both independent bookstores and chains such as Barnes & Noble taking notice of the broader range of readers that are influenced by TikTok and updating their stock to appeal to users.
As of March 2021, BookTok has over 6 billion views and will only continue to grow larger.
Though the popularity of BookTok brought many significant questions regarding the future of the book industry and the books that receive mass attention on social media, the importance of the BookTok phenomenon perhaps lies mainly with the readers who claim their love for books and the creative channels through which they express this admiration. TikTok has demonstrated, at least through BookTok, that brilliant literature is written for a broad audience—the perfect book for you is waiting somewhere on a shelf and, through BookTok, you will surely discover it.
28. What can users do on BookTok?
A. Share favorable books.
B. Buy pretty bookshelves.
C. Make profits from editing.
D. Create their own platforms.
29. What influence does BookTok have?
A. TikTok has lost quantities of users.
B. The elderly take up children’s books.
C. The bookstores change their books accordingly.
D. Youths start treasuring their memories of childhood.
30. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about BookTok?
A. Its bright future. B. Its big challenges.
C. Its amazing function. D. Its minor disadvantages.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why BookTok had an effect on bookstores
B. How BookTok expanded its range of audience
C. Why BookTok gained popularity among elderly
D. How BookTok repopularized young adult fiction
D
People with fewer friends are more likely to attract new friends than people who already have a wide social circle—but they think the opposite is true, a January study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found.
The study demonstrated what the authors call “the friend number paradox (悖论),” or the concept that we think we’ll magnetize more friends if we’re more popular, but at the same time are more interested in befriending others if we know their circle is small.
The study author Xianchi Dai and colleagues conducted three studies that presented participants with scenes to assess the difference between what they predicted others would want in somebody as a friend, and what they wanted in a friend. The researchers found people want high-quality relationships—harder to get from someone with lots of friends—but forget that when guessing what others want in them. They also found they could help correct this difference by reminding participants that, in fact, social butterflies may have less to give.
The researchers say people’s natural self-centered viewpoint contributes to the “friend number paradox.” That is, we’re more likely to put our (in this case, false) predictions about ourselves onto others than to put ourselves in other people’s shoes and apply those insights to us. We also tend to see the positive aspects of having more friends, like signaling a good personality or possessing “precious resources that others seek,” in ourselves. We see the negatives, like not having enough time or energy to sustain a friendship, in others, Dai said. It’s possible that other factors explain this difference, the researchers say. Maybe we prefer less popular people because we’re worried about rejection from queen bees. We might abo think choosing someone whose circle is smaller than ours boosts our social influence.
No matter the potential causes, Dai said the findings suggest people shouldn’t “show off” a large friend number when seeking new connections.
32. What does the underlined word “magnetize” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Ignore. B. Attract. C. Lose. D. Expect.
33. What’s the finding of the three studies?
A. High-quality friendships are hard to get.
B. Social butterflies appeal to more friends.
C. Most people care about the needs of others.
D. People can’t give what they expect from others.
34. What leads to the phenomenon of “the friend number paradox” among people?
A. Selfish personality.
B. Concern about being rejected.
C. Ambition for social influence.
D. Preference for larger friend circles.
35. What is a common misunderstanding of making new friends?
A. A wider social circle helps.
B. A smaller social circle helps.
C. The more friends you have, the better.
D. The fewer friends you have, the better.

For years, research has linked skipping breakfast with increased BMI (body mass index), but few studies have been carried out into the effect of the other meals of the day.
However, a study conducted at Osaka University concluded that not eating dinner is a significant predictor of weight gain and obesity. 36 As part of their annual check-ups, the students were asked how often they ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Researchers also took into consideration the time of eating, whether participants’ meal habits changed over the course of the study, and lifestyle factors.
37 But the researchers found that those who did so all the lime were more likely to be older, more overweight, a smoker or drinker, to sleep for a shorter period of time, and skip other meals more frequently.
These results suggest that skipping dinner, which was much less popular than skipping breakfast, could result in weight gain and a higher likelihood of being overweight than skipping breakfast. It was significantly associated with weight gain of 10% or more, and having a BMI over 25, which is classed as overweight or obese. 38
The researchers suggested that the reason why skipping dinner could lead to weight gain is that it makes people hungrier so they end up eating more over the course of the day. 39 That’s because dinner is typically a meal that lends itself to nutritious foods like lean (少脂的) proteins and vegetables.
The researchers note that their study had drawbacks: 40 Additionally, they didn’t take into account factors like exercise or depression.
A. BMI has its limitations after all.
B. Besides, skipping dinner may mean a lower quality diet.
C. It should be repeated to assess a wider group of people.
D. Skipping lunch was more likely to bring about the same outcomes.
E. It followed 20, 000 subjects overall above 18 over an average of three years.
F. The number of students who said they sometimes skipped dinner was small.
G. Students skipping dinner has a stronger association with weight gain and obesity.

There was an elderly lady standing in the bone-chilling cold outside the back of the supermarket. She was holding a basket with bunches of flowers.
“Would you like the flowers, they are $3?” she asked me as I was walking past. I politely responded “No, thank you”, as I walked away and went inside the supermarket.
I was walking around the supermarket searching for the thing that I was needing to buy and thinking of that lady, standing in the cold holding her basket of flowers. Visualizing the beautiful flowers I had admired, her polite quiet voice and lonely figure, I wondered about her unknown story of standing in the cold with her basket. Maybe her family was in urgent need of money; maybe she was a lone soul to earn a living with her own hands....
I had my own personal struggles, I had to budget for everything and I appreciated that $3 was a lot for me, like many of us all and probably for her too. But it wasn’t my first thought when she had asked me about buying her flowers. My first thought was I didn’t have the cash but this couldn’t be used as an excuse for not buying those flowers. I had not carried cash with me for a few years and I thought many of us did the same.
When I went to the register to pay with my card I asked for $3 cash out. The staff member questioned me about the $3. I felt anxious about it quickly and tried to remember the money I had in. my account. And at the same time she pressed the button to process it. I had mentioned that I wanted to buy flowers from the lady who was selling them outside. Sigh of relief. I was glad to see it all had been accepted by the machine and the staff member handed me the $3.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Now I am faced with a difficulty. I will take part in the college entrance exam next year. At present, I am confused about how to choose my university major. My parents have kept telling me to study medicine in college. However, I am enthusiastic about literature. I do want to be a writer in the future. Would you like to give me some advice?
Looking forward to your early reply.

第二节 (满分25分)
I walked away and around the corner of the supermarket to the lady. She was standing there, trembling in the cold. No sooner had she noticed my approach than her weather-beaten face lit up. I said shyly “Hi sorry. I didn’t have the cash on me. Yes, I would like to buy some of your flowers.” On hearing that, she instantly put the basket of flowers in front of me, wearing a big and warm smile. The flowers were in full bloom, dancing in the wind. I chose the bunch of flowers I had first sighted.
After giving her $3, I was surprised when she handed me the change. I couldn’t help but ask the price of the flowers. “$3 for all!” she explained. Without hesitation, I told her to keep the change. She took the money with shaking hands, tears welling up in her eyes. As I walked away, I hoped someone else could walk up to her and buy the rest flowers. We were all going through our own struggles but no matter how little we could do, it would make a difference.

W: I’m looking forward to our study break in Italy. I can’t wait to dive into their culture.
M: I can’t wait to taste all the food. Italians are well known for the large meals and wine to wash them down with.
Text 2
M: I can’t believe I have tickets to see my favorite band. It’s amazing. I can’t wait.
W: When I was young, I was in love with a boy band. But when I finally got to see them, they were a disappointment.
Text 3
W: I have to create a budget for this month. I’m renting a beautiful new apartment, but it’s more expensive than before.
M: If you learn to cook, you can have much cheaper food.
W: I’ve been buying clothes online so much recently. I think that’s been my main issue.
Text 4
W: Have you seen that new science fiction movie?
M: Not yet, I was supposed to see it with Bill on Friday, but we had to reschedule it to next Tuesday instead.
W: Oh, it’s great! I saw it on Saturday night and I’m already planning to see it again!
Text 5
M: I like the book that it’s based on. And I learned about the director in my film class and really enjoyed his work.
W: Well, I hope it meets your expectations! Oh, it’s about to start. Let me turn my phone off.
Text 6
W: Russell, what will you do after graduation? Have you been looking for jobs?
M: Yes, last week I accepted a job in Texas. It’s a junior sales position with a large insurance company, although I’m not sure about their reputation.
W: That’s great. I guess they have pretty good benefits for their staff.
M: Actually, they aren’t great, but the starting salary is very impressive for someone without much experience.
W: I’m sure you will be successful in sales, since you were president of the student union and joined many clubs in university.
M: Thanks, Elaine. I am hoping that experience will serve me well.
Text 7
W: My sister is going to be really disappointed if we don’t make it in time for dinner.
M: Don’t worry. We still have time. You know they won’t start eating until they’ve all chatted for an hour.
W: Yeah, but she told everyone to get there at 6:00 p.m. They’ve already been chatting for half an hour.
M: Well, we should get there soon.
W: Uh oh... no, we won’t. I wrote Ocean Avenue North by accident instead of Ocean Avenue South in the GPS. This is so embarrassing. We’ll have to turn around.
M: Well, on the bright side, we still got to the ocean. At least we didn’t start off going east by mistake. Otherwise we’d be telling your sister we’ll have to miss dessert too.
W: I’m really not in the mood for jokes.
Text 8
M: Look. If we follow this line, the path will lead us to the lake.
W: Are you sure? Isn’t that line just where the map has been folded?
M: No, look. The blue line goes round the edge of the forest, past the big rocks and down to the lake.
W: OK, well, my book says that it’s a beautiful lake. Definitely worth seeing.
M: It shouldn’t be too hard to find. It would be easier if I used my phone to find it, but there’s no signal out here.
W: Do you want me to hold the map so you can lead the way?
M: That might be an idea. Pass me my water bottle, will you? This hot weather is making me really crazy.
W: Here you are. I think I’ll have one as well before we start walking.
M: Let’s sit on this fallen tree and have it. The view from here is wonderful.
Text 9
W: How are you enjoying working in China? You’ve been here for a while, haven’t you?
M: It’s twelve months today.
W: Wow, it’s gone quickly. Is everything OK?
M: The first six months were tough. I didn’t know anybody, so I only had my own company in a strange place.
W: I think we’ve all been through that.
M: But it’s fine now. I’ve made friends and got used to the way things are here.
W: How are you finding things like shopping and the bank? Are you having any problems dealing with them?
M: Not really. When I’m shopping I just pick things off the shelf, and I try to get to the bank as
soon as it opens, to avoid the waiting lines.
W: Sounds like you’re dealing well with not speaking Chinese.
M: The main problem with that is when I get my hair cut, they just don’t understand I want the same kind of haircut all year round—not shorter in the summer.
W: Hmm, you can’t really take a Chinese person with you to explain, can you? How about getting someone to write a note for you?
M: Yes, I might just do that.
W: Do you think you might learn Chinese?
M: Yes, I’d like to, although it looks extremely difficult.

Bill Gourlay, a film maker from Dunfermline, Fife, was given the film by a friend who asked him to transform it to digital. Mr. Gourlay was eager to find the mystery couple recorded in the film of the wedding at St Peters Church in Kirkcaldy. After seeing the story in a newspaper, the Potters were amazed to finally look back at their big day. Mrs. Potter said, “We looked so young. It brought back a lot of happy memories. It was amazing to see all our friends and family on film after all these years. It was very moving. My daughter saw it and had a bit of a cry. Mr. and Mrs. Potter met at a dance in 1966. Mr. Potter, who was 21 at the time, was working as a mechanic while Annette was training to be a teacher. They were together for two years before getting married on July 27, 1968 in front of around 80 guests. The couple looks very happy when they reflect on the occasion.
