T find a way that wuld wrk fr all seabirds, the researchers first studied seabirds in a general sense, lking t find things that they wuld avid. They nted that seabirds avided eye cntact with ther creatures. Then the researchers came up with a simple idea—they put a small ple t a regular buy and then attached a pair f ggly eyes(金鱼眼)t the tp f it. They made the eyes big enugh s that even birds with pr eyesight, such as geese, wuld see them. Adding t the effectiveness f the device, waves made the eyes mve back and frth. And the wind made the buy spin very slwly, making sure that birds frm every directin wuld get a gd lk at the eyes.
T test their idea, the researchers selected several sites near gillnets and cunted hw many birds apprached and hw many attempted t catch fish near the nets. They then set up their ggly-eyed buys and nce again cunted birds. Over the curse f 62 days, they fund the number f birds that tried t catch fish near the gillnets drpped by apprximately 25% fr a distance f up t 50 meters. They als fund that the birds were less likely t fish near where the buys had been fr up t three weeks after they had been remved.
