As the world tries to quit fossil fuels, there’s a lot of focus on renewable energy sources like wind and solar. But one very promising source of energy comes from deep inside the Earth. And old oil wells could help greatly in developing this power.
“Geothermal” power is based on heat that comes from deep in the earth. ‘Geo’ means Earth and ‘thermal’ means ‘heat’. Earth’s core, deep in the center of the planet, is about as hot as the sun’s surface and is expected to stay that way for billions of years. In some places, where the rocks have lots of holes, this heat comes out in different kinds of hot springs. Humans have been using the Earth’s heat for hundreds of years.
In general, though, geothermal energy requires drilling deep into the Earth. There are different ways of collecting the heat and using it. But these deep geothermal wells can easily produce huge amounts of heat and electricity for hundreds of years—all without polluting. Solar power depends on the sun, and wind power depends on wind. That means they’re not constant. But geothermal sources can produce power day and night all year long.
But geothermal energy also has a big defect—drilling down farther, which can lead to greater heat and more powerful energy sources, to create a geothermal plant is hard, and it costs a lot of money. Now people are starting to explore a clever idea that could make geothermal energy far cheaper: using oil wells that are already drilled.
Oil wells are usually used for a few decades before running dry. Then they are capped and left unused. Now, the US Department of Energy is encouraging scientists and companies to use existing oil wells to create geothermal energy. They have recently given out $8.4 million to four geothermal projects that will work on this technology.
If these projects work well, they can be used at thousands of old oil wells around the US.
28. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The advantages of the geothermal energy. B. The reasons for exploring the Earth’s heat.
C. The explanation of the geothermal power. D. The present application of the Earth’s heat.
29. What is the positive side of energy from geothermal sources?
A. It is always available. B. It’s cheap and eco-friendly.
C. It’s powerful and widely-used. D. It’s multifunctional and clean.
30. What does the underlined word “defect” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Potential. B. Imperfection. C. Innovation. D. Adventure.
31. Which is a better method to create power from the Earth’s heat?
A. Exploiting old oil wells. B. Developing hot springs.
C. Using existing active oil wells. D. Drilling down deeper into the earth.

For Damen Fletcher, chess is much more than a game. This inspiring California man uses chess to coach young people from some of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in Southern California and beyond to develop self-confidence, and find purpose in their lives.
Why does Fletcher choose chess to help kids and teens make the right moves in life? The answer lies in his own life story. Fletcher, who learned to play this game of strategic skill at the age of 13, grew up in Compton, California. After heading farther to college, he returned home to find his friends struggling. As he explains: “Some of them had fallen into prison. Homeless and unemployed... and I just wondered, ‘Why did I have such a different outcome?’ And it was chess.”
So he set about building his own organization “Train of Thought” to help inner city kids find their own king or queen and life goals by learning problem solving, teamwork, and forward planning skills at an early age through chess, while enjoying themselves.
Fletcher highlights in an interview with Fox News that every game of chess is 75 to 100 moves, and every single move that your opponent makes presents a new problem for you to solve, so chess is a game in which the weak can turn out stronger. As Paige Stevenson, a 7th grader and already a keen chess player thanks to Fletcher’s enthusiasm, tells the channel, “He has taught me not to give up because you can move and find a way out instead of losing.”
His organization has partnered with more than 100 schools to date and has taught more than 50,000 students the game of Kings in California, with plans to expand in the US. It is an old proverb that children learn from play, and this is something that Fletcher is keen to stress. And as his website also explains: “If you think chess is just a game, you’re not playing it right.”
32. What do we know about Damen Fletcher?
A. He had a rough childhood. B. He likes nothing but chess.
C. He is a positive chess master. D. He is a famous social activist.
33. What inspired Fletcher to found “Train of Thought”?
A. The value of chess. B. The college education.
C. His pursuit for success. D. His friends’ requirement.
34. Why did the author mention Paige Stevenson in paragraph 4?
A. To compare different ideas. B. To show Paige’s enthusiasm.
C. To provide other information. D. To support Fletcher’s opinion.
35. What can be inferred about the game of Kings from the text?
A. It can help kids grow up happily. B. It may get kids addicted to chess.
C. It will become a required course. D. It is active in schools in the world.

How to Be the Best Sports Parent
When you are the parent of a child who loves, and is good at, sports, it can be easy to push them too hard to achieve their goals or to go completely the other way and be too loose. It can be stressful if you are a sports parent looking to do your best. 36
Give them more independence
If you want your sports-loving child to really achieve their full potential, you need to learn how to loosen the reins(缰绳) a little. The more independence you can give your child, the better they will be able to experiment with techniques. 37 As long as they are not in any danger, it will be a great life lesson for them.
Encourage academic studies
When your child is the best gymnast on the team, it is easy to pin all your hopes on that, but even if your child does get to be a sporting success, having a solid academic education behind them will give them more options if they should not wish to pursue sports. 38 That will help them to succeed even more effectively in their sports.
Have fun
As a family, you should make a point of having as much fun together as possible on and off the field. You can go to games, then go out for pizza, see a movie, and play board games. 39 Not only that, but if you show your child that academic performance is equally as important as sports, it will help to take some of the pressure off them too.
40 However, if you love them, nurture their talent and let them have lots of fun times among the training, you can probably strike the right balance for them, and for you as a parent too.
A. No matter what, you just enjoy being together.
B. Be the kind of person you would like them to be.
C. Smart kids are also better at working out techniques.
D. Being the parent of a talented sports girl or boy can be tough.
E. Here are a few things that might help you to get the balance right.
F. Many parents miss out on the joy of seeing their kids succeed at present.
G. They might take a wrong turn, but that will just help to build their character.

I knew this dreaded day would come sooner or later. It came too fast and there I was, in the waiting room of the dental clinic, miserable with butterflies in my stomach.
My parents told me to sit up, stop wringing(拧) my hands, and take deep breaths to keep calm. It worked. I was calm for maybe two seconds when I heard my name being called. I pretended to be deaf but my mother touched me to get up. I forced myself to step forward and immediately stumbled (绊) over a toy and the boy who was playing with it. My clumsiness got me the attention of everyone in the room. Being stared at by so many pairs of eyes was too much and I hurried to the consultation room as fast as I could, leaving the boy crying for his broken toy.
I had refused my parents’ offer to accompany me. I meant to show them that I was brave enough to face the treatment on my own. I regretted it right now. Thankfully, I forgot my anxiety as I looked around the dentist’s room. Tools of different sizes were arranged neatly in a plate on the tiny table which was connected to a chair with buttons and a light hanging right over it. I avoided looking at my dentist in the eye as I took my seat on the chair shakily.
I tried to calm myself down, imaging how brave I would be. After a while, I was taken by great surprise when all of a sudden the chair moved and I was lying down facing the bright yellow light. When I caught sight of the dental drill on the plate, panic related to a bad childhood experience involving the drill kicked into me.
注意:1.续写的词数应为150左右;
I cried out and almost jumped out of the seat.
My parents were waiting at the door anxiously when I ran out excitedly.

Dear Peter,
In order to improve the learning spirit, our school launched a series of “respecting teachers and valuing education” activities in September. Now I briefly introduce the contents of the activities to you.
Starting with ourselves, we respect teachers’ hard work by showing attentiveness towards study. In addition, we also participated in English speech and writing competitions with the title of “my favorite teacher”. Through the activities, the atmosphere of respecting teachers and valuing education in our school has become stronger. Getting close to our teachers and following their ways, we will study harder and get better.
Yours,
Li Hua
I cried out and almost jumped out of the seat. Watching my frightened look, the dentist asked me what was the matter in a soothing voice behind her mask. I felt embarrassed and ashamed for my rude behavior and explained the bad experience in the past to the dentist. After hearing my story, the dentist smiled and encouraged me to forget the past and face the challenge bravely. I felt eased with the dentist’s comfort and care. Everything was going smoothly and I was grateful to the dentist.
My parents were waiting at the door anxiously when I ran out excitedly. I knew they would find it hard to believe what just happened. I was about to describe the process of treatment when I saw the boy whose toy I just broke. I went up to the boy and his parents and apologized for my misbehavior. All the people sang high praise for my honesty. After that, I followed my parents to the exit to tell them the most proud experience I ever had.

故选A。
根据第四段“Hilde wanted to cover stories important to everyone in her town.”
根据第五段首句“OSN suddenly became famous across the country when a murder happened in town, and 9-year-old Hilde was the first person to report it.”
根据第六段“Hilde was upset by the complaints. But she never let that stop her reporting.” 后文“In 2019,she made the news again when…”列举其新闻报道的又一事例及结果;第七段“Hilde’s activities as a reporter have made her famous, and she has earned several awards.”
第二段“‘Geothermal’ power is based on heat that comes from deep in the earth. ‘Geo’ means Earth and ‘thermal’ means ‘heat’,”“地热”能是基于来自地球深处的热量。“Geo”表示地球,“thermal”表示“heat”。后面接着说明地核温度、地热能的利用等。由此推断,该段主要是对“地热能”进行解释。故选C。
29.A 细节理解题。根据第三段“Solar power depends on the sun, and wind power depends on wind. That means they’re not constant. But geothermal sources can produce power day and night all year long.” 故选A。
上文“Solar power depends on the sun, and wind power depends on wind. That means they’re not constant. But geothermal sources can produce power day and night all year long.” 句后解析“drilling down farther, which can lead to greater heat and more powerful energy sources, to create a geothermal plant is hard, and costs a lot of money.” “But geothermal energy also has a big defect”意为“但地热能也有很大的缺点”,即开采地热能不易。故选B。
31. M: You’re quiet today. Is everything okay?

Text 4

M: Um, pretty much all three of those, although the popularity of WeChat has made things easier. It’s easier to communicate with old friends and people are willing to do it. What about you?
W: My best friend Mari, we’ll have been friends for ten years this summer, and, you know, we still talk on the phone.
M: How did you guys meet?
W: We met in high school, first day of high school. We had a lot of the same taste in music and we don’t have anything in common anymore and I don’t think I’ll ever lose touch with her because we just have that past that we shared.
M: Yeah, I think that’s pretty natural to still keep in touch with your friends but not share the same interests that you used to.

Today marks the end of an era. I always remember when I first came to this university. My family was poor when I applied, and the only possible way for me to attend university was through a scholarship. Unfortunately, the person who funded my scholarship is not here today to see my graduation. His name is Alvin James, and I only sadly found out that he passed away last year. He had left a letter to be delivered to me when I graduate, and I want to read part of it to all of you. “Education is priceless, and should not depend upon your background, race or nationality.” I have been inspired by Alvin’s words and life. He was a generous man who gave his fortune away to charities and people who he believed could make a difference. So the final year of my studies, I have been working with the university to create a new scholarship in his name. Every year, 10 students from poor backgrounds will now be able to attend university. It will be funded by other former students. I hope that everyone graduating here will sign up to help fund someone else’s education. Thank you.
