Jakson Follmann remembers the moment the plane's engine died and everything went black. Then an intense pain, and cold rain falling on his body. Drifting in and out of consciousness, he called out for help, until he saw the beam of a flashlight shining through the wreckage of the fuselage.
It has been five years since the plane carrying Follmann and the rest of Brazilian soccer team
Chapecoense Real ran out of fuel on the way to the final match of South American Cup, slamming into the mountains outside Medellin, Colombia. Seventy-one people were killed in the crash. Follmann, is one of six who survived - though he lost his right leg below the knee.“ We were so excited to go play for the title. Then from one day to the next, I lost my friends and the source of my livelihood. After that, my biggest dream became something so simple: just to be able to walk again.” he said. In the half-decade since, the former goalkeeper has had to reinvent himself. .
His soccer career was cut short by the crash, but he has found new life as a motivational speaker and Brazilian country singer. “As a kid, I had two big dreams. Becoming a soccer player came first. Then fate brought what it did, and now I'm living my second dream thanks to music. I had two options after the accident: sit around feeling sorry for myself, or lift my head up and face life."” he said. He chose the latter.
Follmann, who has released four country music singles, spent two months in hospital after the crash undergoing treatment for 13 fractures (骨折). By 2019, he had recovered so well that he was able to appear as a contestant on reality TV show Popstar. He didn't just participate in the show: he won, with sertanejo songs that pulled at the audience's heart-strings.
Follmann, for his part, says in some ways his new job is not so different from his old one.“As a soccer player, I practiced everyday. Music is no different. I want to reach people. Music can transform lives, like it transformed mine." he said.
    24. What was the reason for the air crash?
    A. The fuel of the plane was used up. B. It was raining and thundering heavily.
    C. The pilot was out of consciousness. D. The engine failed to work without warning.
    25. What did Follmann do to live an active life after the disaster?
    A. Took part in a live show as a judge. B. Delivered inspiring gifts to the disabled.
    C. Released some albums of country music. D. Won the final match of South American Cup.
    26. What helps Follmann go through the darkness?
    A. The original dream in his heart. B. The encouragement from his family.
    C. The desire to win the title of the match. D. The company of his teammates and friends.
    27. Which do you think is the best title for the passage?
    A. Understanding Failure B. Treat Disasters As Common Cases
    C. A Crash Survivor's Song of Hope D. A Motivational Speaker Is Shining
    C
One of the biggest concerns in science is that scientists themselves may influence the outcomes of experiments. Scientists have come up with all sorts of strategies to try to get rid of this problem.
But gathering the data and running an experiment is not the only part of the process that can go wrong. The methods chosen to analyse the data can also influence results. This point was dramatically demonstrated by two recent papers published in a journal called Surgery. Despite being based on the same data set, they drew opposite conclusions about whether using a particular piece of kit during appendix ( 阑尾) removal surgery reduced or increased the chances of infection.
A new paper, from a large team of researchers headed by Martin Schweinsberg,a psychologist a the European School of Management and Technology, in Berlin, helps cast some light on why .Dr Schweinsberg gathered 49 different researchers by advertising his project on social media. Each was handed a copy of a data set consisting of 3. 9m words of text from nearly 8, 000 comments made on Edge. org, an online forum ( 论坛) for chatty intellectuals.
In the end, 37 analyses were regarded sufficiently detailed to include. As it turned out, no two analysts employed exactly the same method, and none got the same result. The problem was not that any of the analyses were“ wrong”in any objective sense. The differences arose because researchers chose different definitions of what they were studying, and applied different techniques.
Truth, in other words, can be a slippery customer, even for simple-sounding questions. What to do? One conclusion is that experimental design is critically important. Dr Schweinsberg hopes that platforms such as Data Explained can help solve the problem as well as revealing it,by allowing scientists to specify exactly how they chose to perform their analysis, allowing those decisions to be reviewed by others. It is probably not practical,he admits, to check and re-check every result. But if many different analytical approaches point in the same direction, then scientists can be confident that their conclusion is the right one.
    28. Why did the researchers get different results according to paragraph 2?
    A. Different methods were applied in the data analysis.
    B. Some experimental techniques were unreliable.
    C. Some analyses were conducted in a new way.
    D. Different data were adopted randomly and indirectly.
    29. Which is TRUE according to paragraphs 3 and 4?
A.49 researchers were gathered to discuss an issue.
B.37 analyses were thought to employ the same method.
C.2 analyses were considered not good enough.
    D.37 researchers got different results.
    30. What does the underlined part“a slippery customer”refer to?
    A. A person who is extremely critical.
    B. Someone who can't be trusted.
    C. A person who is willing to speak frankly.
    D. Someone who can raise questions skillfully.
    31. What can be inferred from the whole passage?
    A. Different results come from the same experimental design.
    B. The more data are collected, the more truthful the results will be.
    C. Data don't lie, but they can lead scientists to opposite conclusions.
    D. The outcomes of the experiments come from the cooperation of the scientists.
    D
Air travel can be a real headache. But if you happen to have a stop at Changi Airport in Singapore, you're in for a wonderful treat.
The main attraction is the Jewel, a donut-shaped glass building featuring the world's tallest indoor waterfall, known as the HSBC Rain Vortex. The 130-foot-tall waterfall uses rainwater that drops seven stories down from the roof. When the water hits the floor, it travels through a large funnel ( 漏斗) ,creating an inverted ( 倒转的) waterfall for two levels in the airport located below the ground level.
The effect is maximized at night when the waterfall is the centerpiece of a 360-degree light and audio exhibit. The Rain Vortex was designed by Los Angeles-based design firm WET. Design director Peter Kopik explained,“It's like the roof is pouring in and the building is getting completed in liquid form.”
If the Rain Vortex isn't enough to attract you to have a stop at Changi Airport, perhaps the Shiseido Forest Valley will. It is spread out across five levels and reaches 100-foot high, with multiple trails for guests to explore. It's filled with more than 900 trees and about 60 , 000 shrubs. Special species from China, the United States, and Australia were chosen because they're most likely to survive the structure's temperature, humidity ( 湿度),and sun exposure.
At the top of the forest is Canopy Park, where people can get different views of the Rain Vortex. There are additional gardens, activities ,and restaurants to explore.
The Jewel is located near Terminal 1 in an area that used to be a parking lot. The attraction covers 1.46 million square feet. It was constructed specifically to attract more tourists to the airport and make it one of the most desirable places to kill time between flights. After all, wouldn't you rather explore an indoor forest and waterfall for a few hours instead of sitting in a crowded airport lounge with just your smart phone for entertainment?
    32. What is the feature of the HSBC Rain Vortex?
    A. Its light and audio effects work all day long.
    B. It uses rainwater collected from the roof.
    C. It has a capacity of 130 shops.
    D. It is the tallest waterfall in the world.
    33. Why could the special plants from different regions survive in the Forest Valley?
    A. Because they are well attended to.
    B. Because they prefer to live in tropical areas.
    C. Because they could avoid the danger of extinction.
    D. Because they could adapt to the environmental conditions there.
    34. What was the purpose of constructing the Jewel?
    A. To enhance the volume of tourists.
    B. To make it the most desirable place of interest.
    C. To offer more convenient services to the aged.
    D. To show the comprehensive national power of Singapore.
    35. What's the writer's attitude to the Changi Airport in Singapore?
    A. Indifferent. B. Supportive. C. Critical. D. Neutral.

According to a recently published report, searches related to guochao on Dianping, a lifestyle information platform, have risen by 170 percent from the same period last year, and reviews have risen by nearly 40 percent. China-chic is happening, but what is it?
37 It has expanded the concept of“Made in China”,which has been recognized as the
representation of Chinese culture and aesthetics ( 审美) offered by homegrown Chinese brands.
China-chic came into the spotlight in 2018. 38 To win market share, many Chinese brands followed in the footsteps of these Western brands. But that year, Chinese sports wear brand Li-Ning changed things up. During the 2018 New York Fashion W eek,Li-Ning introduced its Taoism-inspired Wu Dao collection. The collection not only had a trendy look, but also included elements of traditional Chinese culture. 39 As a result, the company recorded 20 percent revenue growth in 2018,marking the first time the brand's revenue had hit the 10-billion-yuan mark since its founding. The trend to embrace domestic brands has since spread rapidly to various fields and products, from food and drinks to clothing, mobile phones and electric vehicles. For example,White Rabbit ,whose sweet candy brings back childhood memories for many, launched its perfume and lip balm.“We want White Rabbit to be a brand that young people want to share,”Shen Qinfeng, the company's marketing manager said.
_40 Behind the craze is people's positive attitude toward the country's development and their recognition of and growing confidence in national culture.
    A. It immediately grabbed attention at home and abroad.
    B. Buying these products can help me build up a sense of belonging.
    C. A new trend is taking hold in China----guochao,or“China-chic”
    D. The term characterizes the rise of China's native fashion trends.
    E. Before that, big-name foreign companies dominated the world market.
    F. No matter how the guochao trend evolves, there's one thing that won't change.
    G. Many foreign brands have included Chinese traditional culture in their products.

How to Manage Our Time Wisely
Time is the most precious gift for every human being,as such,we must manage it wisely. However, time management does not come naturally,it needs learning and practising.
Firstly, having a schedule is of great importance.Living with a schedule will help us spread out lives in days, months and years. With this knowledge,we can control whatever happens in or after class. And putting off what can be done today until tomorrow will never happen.Additionally, spend the time between study and life in a balanced way. There is no doubt that study should go first for us but time for interesting activities like sports will do good to us to keep moving. Finally, being disciplined is the base of the time management, without which, all would be in vain. After all, actions speak louder than words.
All in all, lost time will never come back. All of us should make use of our time effectively because every minute counts.

W:Could you close the door? It’s freezing.I couldn’t type my report regularly.
M:OK.I was focusing on my work and didn’t pay attention to it.
    Text 2
M:What’s for dinner,Mum?Are we having noodles?
W:We had that yesterday. So I thought I’d make chicken and rice tonight — or fish if you prefer.
M:That sounds good. But I had chicken at school today,so I don’t really want it again.
    Text 3
W:Don’t get me wet.I don’t want to swim.
M:Come on.I’ll race you across the pool.
    W:Not me.The water’s too cold.
    Text 4
    W:Doctor,I have a runny nose.
M:Let me see.Nothing serious.Take one of these pills every six hours and you will get better after a week.
    Text 5
    W:Can you drive a little faster,sir?
M:It’s hard in the rush hour. But I’ll try.
W:Thanks a lot.I have an important interview and I don’t want to be late.
    Text 6
    W:Hi,Charlie.How was your holiday?
M:Well, before we left,I’d imagined that staying by a lake would be like being at the beach. But as it turned out,a lot of water sports that my family had planned for us were out of the question due to the weather. So instead,my cousin took us for a walk along the shore and showed us where to find beautiful stones — we came back with several.
W:That sounds great.Better than our holiday in the mountains.
    Text 7
M:I think the location is good. And the neighbors seem nice. However, considering the walls have to be repaired, and the shelves must be repainted, your asking price is a little too high.
W:I’m sorry. But several people are interested in this flat,so I think we can get the price we were asking for.I’ll show you another flat on Fifth Avenue this afternoon. It’s cheaper than this one,but it’s a bit smaller.
M:I’m afraid I have an appointment with a dentist.Let’s make it some other time.
W:If this afternoon is inconvenient for you,I’ll arrange another date.Let me know when is good for you.
    Text 8
W:Hello,Sunshine Flower Shop. This is Susan speaking.
M:This is Tom Hanks.I’d like to order some flowers for my mother and have them sent to her apartment.
W:Fine,Mr. Hanks. What kind of flower do you want?
M:I’d like to send a dozen red carnations and some yellow lotus as well.
W:Our long-stem red carnations are selling for 10 pounds a dozen and 12 for lotus. They are really quite nice.
    M:All right then.I’ll take them.
W:I need your complete address,Mr. Hanks.
    M:The address is No. 78,MW street.For the card,just write something simple.How about“Dear Mom,all my love”?
    W:OK.When should they arrive?
M:They should be there before 5:00 in the afternoon October,19th.My mom’s telephone number is 84563633−085.Please call her first before you deliver them.
W:That should be no problem.Just one more question,Mr. Hanks. How do you intend to pay for it?
M:You can put it on my visa card. The number is KH3272677.
    W:Got it.Bye.
    M:Bye.Thanks.

W:Here is the program for the three-day festival I was telling you about the other day.
M:Let me have a look.Wow,there are so many interesting events taking place that I wish we could attend them all!
W:I know, but since exams are coming soon and we have to study,I think we should choose the ones we’re really interested in.
M:Well,to begin with,I think we shouldn’t miss the Film Festival for the world! Black and white films are so cool!
W:Yes,they are.I would also like to attend the Stand-up Comedy Night.I heard that it’s really funny.
M:With all this pressure at school,I think I could do with a good laugh.
W:Now,shall we go to the Contemporary Crafts Exhibition? It’s really amazing. And we’ll have a chance to test our DIY skills and prove our creativity.
M:Well,to tell you the truth,I would much prefer to go to the concert.Good music and dancing will help recharge our batteries.Don’t you think so?
    W:Yes,you’re right.I can’t wait!
    Text 10
When I went to Spain,I thought it was important that I lived with Spanish people,so I didn’t speak English all the time.I did know some friends who were in Madrid as well but I didn’t stay with them.I lived with two Spanish girls and we got on really well.In the beginning, they used to speak really slowly and loud to make sure I would understand. But I often felt like a bit of a fool.Soon they realized that I could understand even though sometimes I might not know what to say in response. It was not difficult to find a house. But the most difficult thing when I first arrived in Spain was to figure out the rental agreement,I didn’t understand it at all, because it was full of legal terms. The house owner was about 85 years old and she didn’t speak any English. She didn’t really understand why I couldn’t understand what I was reading. Those are the challenges you have to face when you move to a new country and there are things you have never considered before. But you have to get through them when you are over there.
Obviously, the aim of your year abroad is to live in the country where they speak the language you’re learning.Just talk to the locals and learn as many everyday phrases as possible.Learn what people really say, instead of just things that you learn from textbooks and from your classes at university.
