I must have looked deep in thought,or as deep in thought as an 11-year-old man can, when my grandmother glanced up from her weeding to ask,“You have something on your mind, don’t you?”
“Yes,I was thinking that someday I want to be an Olympic speed skating champion like my hero,Eric Heiden.I want to be a doctor like my parents and I want to help children in Africa.”
I immediately knew I had confided in the right person when a knowing smile broke across her face.“Johann,of course! You can do anything you want to do!” she said simply. And with my grandmother’s support,I set out to pursue my passions.
14 years later,I was well ready to take hold of my first dream:becoming an Olympic champion. The Olympics in 1994 were in my home country,Norway. As I entered the Olympic stadium,I wasn’t the best athlete, and many had doubts about my ability to perform well. But I had something special working for me.I had a woman in the first row who believed in me following my passions just as much as I did.For the first time ever,my grandmother was going to see me skate.
It happened.Breaking a world record,I won the gold.
As I stood on the podium(领奖台) that I had dreamed about my entire life,a curious question popped into my head. Why me?Why did I win, given all the other incredible competitors out there? The reason had to be more than a grandmother who shared a belief in her grandson’s dream. The question led me to only one answer:Because I wanted to make a difference in the world, and with all the media attention on my success,I could.
I immediately knew what that difference had to be:hope in the lives of the children in Africa.Six months earlier,I’d been invited to Eritrea as an ambassador for Olympic Aid.

After years of observing human nature,I have decided that two qualities that make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance are curiosity and discontent.I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together.
Together, these deep human urges(驱策力) count for much more than ambition.Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground.Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent,“Why? Why? Why?”
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don’t have to be learned. We are born with them and need only recapture them.
“The great man,” said Mencius(孟子),“is he who does not lose his child’s heart.” Yet most of us do lose it.We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires only the calm and restful average. It encourages us to occupy our own little corner,to avoid foolish leaps into the dark, and to be satisfied.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them,we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.
How should you start? Modestly,so as not to become discouraged.I think of one friend who couldn’t arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it.Now she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement.
One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You don’t have any special ability? Most people don’t; there are only a few geniuses. You don’t have any time? That’s good, because it’s always the people with no time who get things done.Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom’s Cabin while cooking. You’re too old?Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.
Whenever you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now,for you’ll never be more alive than you are at this moment.
5.In writing paragraph 1,the author aims to .
A.propose a definition
B.make a comparison
C.reach a conclusion
D.present an argument
6.What does the example of Galileo tell us?
A.Trial and error lead to the finding of truth.
B.Scientists tend to be curious and ambitious.
C.Creativity results from challenging authority.
D.Greatness comes from a lasting desire to explore.
7.What can you do to recapture curiosity and discontent?
A.Observe the unknown around you.
B.Develop a questioning mind.
C.Lead a life of adventure.
D.Follow the fashion.
8.What could be the best title for the passage?
A.Curious Minds Never Feel Contented
B.Reflections on Human Nature
C.The Keys to Achievement
D.Never Too Late to Learn

Ⅷ.读后续写
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I wouldn’t have achieved any success in writing without my grandma and my husband’s encouragement.
The summer I turned 11 I spent two weeks with my grandparents. There were no other kids in the neighbourhood.I was afraid I would die of boredom.I missed my friends back in my hometown, and missed riding my bike everywhere.I even missed my brother and sister.
One afternoon Grandma was in the kitchen.“When’s Grandpa coming home?” I asked.Maybe he’d take us for a ride out.
“He’s out of town for a meeting and won’t be home till tomorrow.” She opened the door and the heat came out.
“I’m bored,” I said.“There’s nothing to do here.”
“Oh,there’s plenty to do,” she said.“You just have to use your imagination.”
Oh,I had an imagination all right. At night I’d call to Grandma from the guest room, terrified that I heard a noise in the closet or saw a face at the window.“There’s no one here but us,” Grandma would say, rubbing my back until I fell asleep.
It’s too bad that imagination deserted me in the daytime.“I can’t think of anything,” I said.
“How about a little trip?” she asked.
We walked along the brick sidewalks. We crossed the street.I saw the movie theatre. My heart began to race.I loved movies! But,no,Grandma walked right past the theatre.“Here we are,” she said, stopping in front of a store.“I thought you might like to go to Switzerland.”
“But this is a bookstore,” I said.Had the heat gone to Grandma’s head?
She pushed open the glass door, nodded to the sales clerk and walked to the children’s section. Her fingers danced along the covers of the books until they came to a thick volume bound in brown cloth. She pulled it off the shelf and handed it to me.
“Here you go.It’s one ticket to the snow-covered Alps,Switzerland.”
I looked at the title.“Heidi?” I’d never heard of it.“Is it any good?”
“There’s only one way to find out. It’s about a girl who goes to stay with her grandfather (like you)!”
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Back at the apartment Grandma lay down for a nap.

1.B 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“And with my grandmother’s support,I set out to pursue my passions.”可知,在祖母的支持下,作者开始追求他的梦想。由此可知,当作者说出他的梦想时,祖母支持他,故B项正确。
2.C 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“I must have looked deep in thought,or as deep in thought as an 11-year-old man can”及第四段中的“14 years later,I was well ready to take hold of my first dream:becoming an Olympic champion.”

Ⅶ.
Good evening,everyone!
I am Li Hua.My dream is to be a writer.A writer is a transmitter of ideas,a critic of morality, and a positive energy that awakens people.I dream of one day being able to write a heart-pounding text that locks all my joys and sorrows. One day I will become a writer like Mo Yan and win the Nobel Prize for literature, winning honour for our country. In order to realize my dream,I must insist on writing, study hard and be admitted to my ideal university, which will lay a solid foundation for realizing my dream of being a writer.I believe that as long as I don’t give up,my dream will come true.
That’s all.Thank you for your listening.
Ⅷ.Back at the apartment Grandma lay down for a nap.I sat in Grandpa’s armchair and opened the book. How right Grandma was!I was absorbed in the girl in the snow-covered Alps. She learns to love reading (like me)!Wasn’t that exactly what had happened to me?She had heard my plea. She had changed my imagination from my fears to my best dreams. That book opened a whole new world,a world I’ve delighted in exploring.I began to love reading and I have got into the habit of reading a lot from then on.I’m always reading something, recommending something.
Twenty years ago my husband said,“You love books so much. Why don’t you write your own?” I did.And I’ve kept at it.So far,I’ve had more than 20 books published.Just like Grandma showed me that long-ago summer, there’s plenty to do.I just have to use my imagination.
