Luis Reyns says he’s always tried t get invlved in his children’s educatin: attending meetings n schl-imprvement prjects and prviding classrm fd. But when his yungest daughter’s schl invited families t attend a nine-week prgramme Let’s Change the Curse rganised by a leading educatin advcacy grup here t learn abut parenting and schl participatin, he realised his past effrts barely scratched the surface.
Each weekly sessin tuched n different parenting themes, like setting up a special space at hme fr kids t d hmewrk, and the imprtance f cnfidence. One f the mst helpful sessins, he recalls, fcused n what a child shuld knw academically in each grade and hw t talk t teachers abut his daughter’s perfrmance. “The wrkshps really wke me up,” says Mr Reyns.
Levels f parental participatin in Mexican schls have lng been lw. Many peple cmmnly believe a child’s educatin is the schl’s jb t get invlved. In sme parts f the cuntry, a mther’s r father’s wn lack f educatin can play int a sense that they have nthing t cntribute. And even in private schls, where there might be mre adults with fixed jbs, the participatin is very rare, with sme parents viewing their tuitin bill as their educatinal cntributin. There are als cases where the schls themselves ignre the ptential f parents in a child’s educatin, discuraging cmmunicatin between families and schls.
But the imprtance f family participatin is smething many nn-prfit educatin advcates and recently the gvernment are starting t hme in n Mexic. Part f Mexic’s 2013 natinal educatin refrm stresses the imprtance f parents playing a mre active rle in their child’s educatin, encuraging an increase in parental-participatin prgrammes, including Let’s Change the Curse.
Susana Castellans, headmaster f a schl in Mexic City, says, “Peple are recgnising yu have t wrk tgether t create happy successful citizens. It’s n lnger acceptable t set apart the rles f teacher vs. parent vs.schl headmaster.”
