Not very long ago, moving to a new town meant 1 (lose) track of your friends and the only way of getting news from faraway friends was writing letters that 2 (take) ages to be delivered. With advances in technology, the way we make friends and communicate with them has changed 3 (significant).
The digital age 4 (enable) us to be in contact with people 5 share our interests, even if they live on 6 other side of the world. However, we need to keep personal information security in mind to make them appear our privacy.
On social media sites, people tend 7 (post) only positive updates that make them appear happy and 8 (friend). But smiling photos can hide real problems. Remember the saying: on the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog. A young person could be old; a woman could be a man; we could even be sharing our information 9 criminals.
Despite the fact that technology has changed the way we acquire friends, the 10 (mean) of friendship and our eagerness to make friends remain the same.

There are many idioms or sayings in English that we use when we want to describe relationships between and among friends. Here are a few to practice with your friends.
The idiom “through thick and thin” is used to describe a friend who is loyal and supportive during bad times as well as good times. It most often describes a friendship that has been strong for a long time. Here are two examples: John and Lisa have been friends through thick and thin. My best friend and I stayed together through thick and thin.
If two people are “like two peas(豌豆)in a pod”, it means that they get along very well. They are two very good friends and they are very similar to each other. I have never seen Lola and Camille argue; they are like two peas in a pod.
Some friends are especially sympathetic and easy to talk to. They are not judgemental or impatient. They are good at sharing our pain, which helps ease our pain. A friend like this is often called “a shoulder to cry on”.We can go to this person with a problem or sadness and he/she brings comfort to us.
“To hit it off” with someone means immediately liking or getting along with someone. This usually happens the first time two people are meeting. They often share interests, goals, and beliefs. This can also happen between friends who like each other at first sight. Carmen and Isabel hit it off at the party and are going to a movie together today. Mike and I did not hit it off on our first date but we are going to try once more.

Mark Smith and Jarryd Haines are good friends. The two boys from Sydney have known each other for most of their lives. Both of them enjoy playing Australian football.
A few years ago, when Mark was nine, he developed brain cancer. The disease robbed(夺走)the boy of his sight, part of his hearing and his ability to play his favorite sport. However, throughout the years, Jarryd and Mark have maintained the close relations. They still share their love of Australian football. And they still enjoy talking about the Sydney Swans, their favorite team.
Two weeks ago, I took my seat at the Sydney Cricket Ground to watch the Sydney Swans. The old stadium was crowded with fans. Shortly into the second quarter, I heard some great commentaries(现场解说)from a boy. Jarryd was bringing the game to life. I turned and saw him. Mark was sitting next to him. Although he cannot see anymore, Mark still loves the Sydney Swans very much. Usually, he goes to the stadium and listens to the commentary on the radio. However, in the second quarter of that match, the radio system broke down. That was when his partner Jarryd stepped in.
I hardly looked at the Sydney Swans and Buddy, the team’s star player. Instead, I was focusing on Jarryd and Mark. “What’s happening now, mate?” Mark asked. “Don’t worry, Mark,”Jarryd replied.“Okay. Buddy’s got it. Will he go for it? He’s going for it! It’s his tenth goal!” Mark listened carefully. He was lost in the magic of Australian football brought to life by his friend.
Sports can be competitive. However, they can also enable us to share wonderful moments with others. Here, Jarryd and Mark have moved me, and perhaps some other spectators, with the best commentary.
5.Why didn’t Mark play Australian football any longer?
A.He took up a new hobby.
B.He lost his interest in it.
C.He was unable to play it because of his disease.
D.His favorite team—the Sydney Swans lost the game.
6.What did Jarryd do for Mark at the stadium?
A.Jarryd helped Mark step into the stadium.
B.Jarryd made Buddy score his tenth goal.

7.Which of the following words best describe Jarryd?
A.Generous and active.
B.Considerate and patient.
C.Diligent and ambitious.
D.Competitive and smart.
8.What is the text mainly about?
A.A lively commentary.
B.The Sydney Swans and Buddy.
C.An Australian football match.
D.The precious friendship between two boys.

How to Recognize a True Friend
Sometimes it can be hard to recognize a true friend. Hopefully this article will help you recognize which friends are the keepers.
Be able to trust your friends. You ought to be able to trust true friends and they should return this trust. Do your friends tell you secrets that no one else knows? Ask you for advice? 1 However, if your friends tend to hide things from you and act secretly, then this is a sign that they may not trust you.
2 Think about it. How comfortable are your friends when they are around you? Are they being themselves around you? Are they hiding something? True friendships can take a while to develop, but if your friends are true they should feel comfortable with you, and vice versa (You with them).
Think about loyalty(忠诚). 3 If you are in need of a helping hand, your true friends should be there to offer it to you. True friends don’t try to get one another into trouble. A true friend will always be loyal to you and will not reveal secrets.
Think about nicknames. A lot of true friends love to give each other nicknames! If your friend is giving you nicknames, then this is a great sign. Think of the nickname your friend has given you, does it suit you well? 4
Look at how you fight. Nearly all best friends fight. 5 True friends will find their way through a fight, no matter what the size is. True friends will remain “faithful” to each other even during a fight. They will not divulge(泄露) each other’s secrets, and they still care about each other.
A.Consider comfort.
B.Choose your friends carefully.
C.True friends are always there for one another.
D.Both are sure signs that your friends trust you.
E.If so, this shows your friend must know you quite well.
F.So if you and your friend have arguments, don’t worry!
G.An inside joke shows that you share a special connection with your friend.

5.who/that 考查定语从句。设空处无提示词,空前为名词people,空后句子缺少主语,故推测此处为定语从句。修饰先行词people,指人,定语从句的关系词在从句中作主语,故本空应用关系代词who或that。
6.the 考查冠词。on the other side of...为固定短语,意为“在……的另一边”。
7.to post 考查非谓语动词。tend to do sth.意为“往往会做某事”,故本空应用不定式作宾语。句意:在社交媒体网站上,人们往往只发布显得快乐且友好的积极的最新消息。
