21.(6分)I was travelling by the West Coast Express to Mangalore two years ago. Berth(铺位)No. 55, not far from me, was occupied by a middle-aged gentleman. When the train reached Palakkad Junction around 9:00 p.m., a large group of tourists entered with much noise. Just then another middle-aged man from the group declared that he owned Berth 55. He even had a paper given by his travel agent to support himself.
The ticket examiner arrived and told the second man that it was not his berth. “No,” said the second man. “It’s mine.” A policeman from the Railway Protection tried to get the second man leave. But he wouldn’t give in---- and he had the support of his companions.
Fierce argument continued, even long after the train left Palakkad. Then someone even pulled the emergency chain(应急链) as we were leaving Tirur station, four stops after Palakkad. Nobody could sleep and it was getting late.
Suddenly, around midnight, I watched a teenager, a student I am sure, climbed down from an upper berth close to me. “Please take my berth,” he told the second man, who accepted it after a bit of hesitation.
To my great surprise, the student then spread a newspaper on the floor and was soon lost in deep and peaceful sleep. By now everyone was quiet, as if nothing had happened!I’m a 58-year-old biology teacher who has handled two recent generations of students. 22.(8分) The woman didn’t like us. We didn’t do anything to offend her and she didn’t know us but that didn’t matter. As new female teachers in the Emirati School, we Westerners greeted her every day. Whenever we saw her, she avoided eye contact with us. Eventually, some of us stopped trying to befriend her.
Well after 16 months in the school, we had a secret pal gifting. I drew her name from the glass jar and that meant she was my secret pal. My role was to buy her a gift and say something about her when we publicly acknowledged who our secret pal was.
I bought her a small rose arrangement and asked someone to write a message on it and then sent it to her room. She was so touched. Next day I sent a bottle of shampoo but I wrote the message in English because she needed to know her secret pal was a Westerner before the day of the “big reveal”. I also sent her a fragrant candle.
I had brought a few gifts from Ireland when I returned to the Middle East in September. I decided to gift her a silver coloured bangle.
Then came the day of the “big reveal”. We all gathered in the staff meeting room and everyone was excited. The host said, “Several days ago, when you received your gift, you wrote a few kind words about your secret pal and passed the gift to them.” She taught music in the school so I said, “My secret pal is someone who brings music to our ears every day of the week.” I didn’t even need to say her name because everyone knew exactly who I meant.
She came forward with a huge warm smile. She hugged me and kissed me on both cheeks and graciously accepted my gifts. I think everyone’s understanding of things is subjective, so we should have more communication with people around us.
1、How did the woman respond to the Westerners greetings?
A.She blamed them. B.She kept away from seeing their eyes.
C.She treated them kindly. D.She avoided meeting them again.
2、What was the author supposed to do after knowing the name of her secret friend?
A.Prepare a gift for her. B.Write a speech about her.
C.Find out who it is. D.Chat with her.
3、Why did the author write the message in English in paragraph 3?
A.To show other teachers her identity.
B.To teach the woman some English.
C.To let the woman know her nationality.
D.To make other teachers better understand her intention.
4、What was the woman’s attitude towards the author at last?
    A.Friendly. B.Doubtful.
    C.Regretful. D.Forgiving.
23.(8分) Over the years Lisa urged her sister Helen to prepare for her old age. Now they passed sixty. Lisa had a big house, Helen had the clothes on her back.
Lisa had hated being a child and couldn’t wait to grow up and buy herself everything. What Helen wanted was to go outside and play.
When anyone would hire her, Lisa put herself to work. She never touched a penny of her money though her young mouth watered for ice cream and candy. When the dimes (一角硬币) added up to dollars, she lost her taste for sweets. And her bankbook became her most precious possession.
Helen had a boyfriend Harry whose only ambition was to play a horn. That Helen married Harry straight out of high school was not surprising. Two or three times Lisa was halfway persuaded, but to give up a job that paid well for a homemaking job that paid nothing was a risk she was unable to take.
Helen’s married life was nothing for Lisa to envy. She and Harry played in second-rate bands. But Lisa had a big house because her boss offered her his first house at a price so low that it would be like losing money to refuse.
Harry died abroad, in a third-rate hotel, with Helen crying as hard as if he had left her a fortune. He had left her nothing but his horn. Lisa knew she would have to bring her home.
At dinner, Helen began to tell stories. They were rich with places and people, most of them lowly, all of them magnificent. Her face showed the joys and sorrows.
Then Lisa knew why Helen didn’t mention the shining room. Tonight Helen saw only what she had come seeking, a place in her sister’s home and heart.
She said, “That’s enough about me. How have the years used you?” “I didn’t use them,” said Lisa regretfully. “I saved for them but forgot to enjoy them. Now it’s too near the end to try. ”Helen said, “Don’t count the years that are left to us. At our time of life it’s the days that count. You’ve too much catching up to do to waste a minute of a waking hour feeling sorry for yourself.” Lisa smiled.
1、In her life Lisa attached most value to .
A.further education B.a job in hand
C.ice cream and candy D.a chance to get married
2、Why did Lisa lose her taste for sweets?
A.Because she kept working and had no time to buy sweets.
B.Because she worked hard to make dimes add up to dollars.
C.Because she kept saving money and lost the basic desires.
D.Because she had little money to afford sweets.
3、In what way is the story mainly developed?
    A.Changing locations. B.Giving examples.
    C.Creating conflicts. D.Comparing characters.
4、What is probably the best title of the passage?
A.Single or Married? B.Preparations for Old Age
C.Rich or Poor? D.A House and a Bank Account
24.(8分)Statistically, air travel is by far the safest way to travel and you can make flying even safer, just by following these simple rules. As your chances of being involved in an air accident are practically nil(零), many of these rules concern what you should and shouldn’t do to make your journey safer when you are in the air.
    ●Fly on non-stop routes
Most accidents occur during the take off, climb, descent and landing period of a flight, so flying non-stop reduces your exposure to these complicated procedures.
    ●Choose larger aircraft
Although small aircrafts have very good safety records, those with more than 30 passenger seats are designed to comply(遵守 )with much stricter regulations and are tested more regularly to make sure they still comply. Also, in the unlikely event of a serious accident, larger aircrafts provide a better opportunity for passenger survival.
    ●Pay attention to the pre-flight safety briefing(简报)
The information may seem to be repeated, but it's worth listening to the flight attendants. And even if you have flown before, it doesn't mean you know everything about the aircraft you're on, such as the location of the closest emergency exit.
    ●Store things safely
Never put very heavy articles in the overhead storage bins. They may fall out when someone opens the bin and cause injury. Also, the bin may not be able to hold heavier objects during the violent movements of air caused by the wind.
●Keep your seat belt fastened while you are seated
Cabin crew always tell you this, but it's important. You could be seriously injured if the plane hits the violent movement of air unexpectedly. Always fasten your seat belt if you are told to. The general rule of flying is this: If you are told to do something, do it first and ask questions later.
●Let the flight attendant pour your hot drinks
Flight attendants are trained to handle hot drinks like coffee or tea in a crowded aisle on a moving aircraft, so allow them to pour the drink and hand it to you. Never ask to take a coffee pot from one of them.
1、What is the general reason for these air safety rules?
A.What to do in the event of a crash.
    B.How to avoid sudden change.
C.How to improve safety while you are flying.
    D.How to avoid injury.
2、The underlined phrase "The general rule" in the fifth refers to .
A.anything the flight staff tell you to do
    B.general safety advice
    C.walking around the plane
    D.pouring hot drinks
3、Which of the following is NOT true?
A.larger planes have more safety checks and are safer in an accident.
B.Take-offs are safer on non-stop flights than landing.
C.Every aircraft is different, so the safety procedures may be different.
D.Seat belts should be worn to protect against sudden change.
4、The best title should be .
A.The safest way to travel B.Air safety tips
    C.Non-stop Routes D.How to take a plane
25.(10分)Dormitory management officials in universities say that lately they are noticing something different: students seem to lack the will and skill to address their ordinary conflicts. “We have students who are mad at each other and they text each other in the same room,” says a teacher. “So many of our roommate conflicts are because kids don’t know how to negotiate.”
And as many psychologists will tell you, bottled emotions lead to silent unhappiness that can boil over into frustration and anger. “At Florida University, emotional outbreaks occur about once a week,” the dormitory director says. “It used to be: ‘Let’s sit down and talk about it,’” he says. “Recently, roommate conflicts have increased. The students don’t have the person-to-person discussions and they don’t know how to handle them.” The problem is most impressive among freshmen; dormitory officials say some students even never seem to catch on till graduation, and they worry about how such students will deal with conflicts after college.
Administrators suppose that relying on cell phones and the Internet may have made it easier for young people to avoid uncomfortable meetings. Why express anger in person when you can do it in a text? Facebook makes the situation worse as complaints go public. “Things are posted on someone’s wall on Facebook: ‘Oh, my roommate kept me up all night studying,”’ says Dana Pysz, an assistant director in the housing office at California University. “It’s a different way to express their conflicts to each other.” In recent group discussions at North Carolina State University, students said they would not even accuse the noisy neighbors on their floor face to face.
Administrators also point to parents who have fixed their children’s problems in their entire lives. Now in college, the children lack the skills to attend to even modest conflicts. Would these parents continue to take care of everything on campus?
1、What does the underlined word “address” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.To greet someone with a title or name. B.To start trying to solve a problem.
C.To put an address on an envelope. D.To make a formal speech.
2、Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A.Students handled it directly when they were in conflict.
B.Parents are the main factor to make their children lose the skills.
C.Cellphones are to blame in the students’ conflicts in their dormitories.
D.Unhappy and cornered emotions resulted in quarrels between students once a week.
3、What do we learn from the group discussions at North Carolina State University?
A.Students are always angry with each other.
B.Students have to bear noises from neighbors.
C.Students may be not good at negotiating in person.
    D.Students are brought up self-centered.
4、Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Students’ Unhappy Life in University B.Parents’ Attention in Children’s Life
C.Students’ Failure to Deal with Conflicts D.Teachers’ Concerns about Students

24、Space is where our future is — trips to the Moon, Mars and beyond. Most people would think that aside from comets(彗星) and stars, there is little else out there. But, since our space journey started we have left so much trash(垃圾) there that scientists are now concerned that if we don't clean it up, we may all be in mortal (致命的)danger.
The first piece of space junk was created in 1964, when the American satellite Vanguard I stopped operating and lost its connection with the ground center. However, since it kept orbiting around the Earth without any consequences, scientists became increasingly comfortable abandoning(抛弃) things that no longer served any useful purpose in space.
It is estimated (估计)that there are now over 500,000 pieces of man-made trash orbiting the Earth at speeds of up to 17,500 miles per hour. The junk varies from tiny pieces of paint chipped off rockets to cameras, huge fuel tanks, and even odd items like the million-dollar tool kit that astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn Piper lost during a spacewalk.
The major problem with the space trash is that it may hit working satellites and damage traveling spacecraft(飞船). Moreover, pieces of junk may collide(碰撞) with each other and break into pieces which fall back to the Earth. To avoid this, scientists have invented several ways for clearing the sky. Ground stations have been built to monitor larger pieces of space trash to prevent them from crashing into working satellites or space shuttles. Future plans include a cooperative effort among many nations to stop littering in space and to clean up the trash already there.
5、What was the first piece of man-made space trash?
    A.A camera. B.A tool kit.
C.A fuel tank. D.A broken satellite.
6、Why were scientists NOT concerned about space trash in the beginning?
A.It no longer served any useful purpose.

    第二节 书面表达(满分25分)
    29、Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m Li Hua, a senior 3 student. Learning that you will organize a Chinese & American culture Camp this summer, I’m writing to apply to be a member of it for the following reasons.
To begin with, I have a good command of English, which enables me to communicate with American friends fluently. As a Chinese, I have mastered various skills related to our traditional culture, Taichi being my favorite because it does much good to my health and I have been practicing it for 5 years. Sure enough, American friends will be crazy about it after touching it. And as you know, Chinese cooking is popular all over the world. It happens that I’m expert at it and I’m delighted to present some traditional Chinese dishes to everybody.
I would appreciate it if you could consider my application seriously, for I’ m eager to share the wonderful time with you. Looking forward to your early reply.
    Yours Sincerely,
    Li Hua
