    第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)Killer whales in Alaska’s Bering Sea have figured out an easy way to get fed. Instead of seeking out the fish them- selves, the clever whales chase down fishing boats and steal the entire catch of the day, as much as 20,000 to 30,000 pounds.
Killer whale “thieves” are not a new phenomenon. Japanese fishermen have reported being followed by killer Whales since the 1950s. However, the increasing frequency of whale fish theft in the Bering Sea's continental shelf is now threatening the livelihood of fishermen.
Paul Clampitt, a local fisherman, says his crew tried to keep the whales away with loud sounds. Though that worked for a short time, the whales now consider the noise “ a dinner bell”. Jay Herbert tried using sonar to keep the whales away. He also met with little success. According lo the experienced fisherman, the smart whales deliberately seek out longliners (延绳钓渔船), and, all the first opportunity presented to them, steal the fish, leaving behind just the lips of the fish caught!
NOAA Fisheries biologist John Moran is not surprised at the whales’ thieving skill. The expert says whales are skilled hunters who can distinguish the sounds of different boats and even recognize the sounds of the operating system that places the fishing equipment into the ocean. The expert jokes, “ Grabbing a fish off a line is nothing.” Since they are social animals, it is easy for whales to pass their skills on to others.
Killer whales are not the only whale species that have learned to steal from humans. In the Gulf of Alaska, sperm whales also conduct similar thefts. Longline fishermen off Washington, Chile, Australia, Hawaii, and many other countries have reported similar incidents. There is, unfortunately, no easy fix to this problem. One of the possible solutions is using pot traps similar to the ones used to catch crabs. However, the cost of switching from longline to pot fishing is too high, especially for small-scale fisheries. There is also no guarantee that the catch will be safe from the intelligent whales which, many fear, will eventually figure out how to open the pots!
    1、What concerns fishermen in Alaska?
A.The killer whales eating their fish. B.The decrease of numbers of whales.
C.The killer whales chasing their boats. D.The high cost of operating fishing boats.
2、What may be the means to protect fishermen’s catch at present?
    A.Loud sounds. B.Pot traps.
    C.Sonar. D.Dinner bells.
3、What can we know from the text?
A.Whales can learn from each other.
    B.Whales’ thieving skills surprise experts.
C.Whales are able to communicate with fishermen.
D.Killer whales are the most intelligent whale species
4、What can be the best title for the text?
A.Fishermen Facing Danger B.Whales Teasing Fishermen
C.Thieves Stealing from Fishermen D.Whales Living All over the World
22.(8分)According to a Pew Research Center report from November 2013, “71% of those 10-18 turn to the internet as a main news source.” Another Pew report found from 2012 says that on an average day, 29 percent of young people were “newsless” meaning they did not get any news, from traditional platforms, mobile phones, or even social networks.
Despite the fact that both my husband and I are in journalism, my husband as a design editor and myself as a writer, I have often wondered if our four sons would grow up to read printed pages with their own children someday.
I got my answer last week when my failure to renew us living in a newspaper desert for two weeks. Normally we get both The Virginian-Pilot (the paper for which my husband works) and The Christian Science Monitor Weekly print edition. Our four sons have grown up with a variety of print newspapers available daily. That has changed slightly since our youngest, Quin, 10, has also become an online news tracker.
However, it wasn’t until the newspapers stopped coming to our doorstep seven days a week that I learned how deeply attached they all are to the printed, paper, page. That’s when we decided to make a list of what we have come to rely on newspapers to do cheaply and immediately.
Here’s the list we made together of what our newspaper is used for beyond learning the news itself: as an umbrella when caught in rain; to stuff in wet shoes overnight to dry; to stuff in hats to keep their shape; to stuff under doors and in cracks to stop cold wind from coming in; to wallpaper for a doll house (my dad did that once)….
Despite the growing list of household uses, my sons’ love for reading the paper before it becomes cage liner has helped me to realize that there is still hope that our kids and future generations will continue to value the printed news as more than just a means to a crafting project end, but to getting a more touchable grasp on the issues they may face in life.
1、What is the Pew Research Center report probably about?

C.to act as an umbrella when caught in rain.
D.to stuff under doors and in cracks to stop cold wind coming in.
4、How should children and future generations continue to value the newspaper?
A.using it as a means to a crafting project end.
B.relying on it to do cheaply and immediately.
C.growing up with a variety of print newspapers available daily.
D.getting a more touchable grasp on the issues they may face in life.
23.(8分)“This way, everyone.” said the young Bahamian as he led the way to the hoar. As the boat moved over the waves, I thought back eleven years to my first island visit via a cruise ship. As we landed, I noticed a sign advertising swimming with dolphins. I looked at my mother; she knew exactly what I wanted, but I was too young. “Maybe some other time,” she said. I think everyone knows that those four words usually translate to never. It made me, a little boy, depressed for many days. From that day on, it was my dream to swim with those gentle creatures.
Now, after 15 minutes of travelling, we reached the Sanctuary Bay. As we arrived, I saw the gray creatures showing off their unique talent before my eyes. We were led off the boat, past a back building. Our guide told us we would have the pleasure of spending the next 90 minutes with Kaholo, a young male, and Robola, the largest female, who is quite famous for having played the lead in the film Zeus and Roxanne.
My father and I were joined by four others and followed the man once more. He told us to jump into the water while he let the dolphins into that part of the bay. For the first 20 minutes, we could go anywhere and touch the dolphins as they swam by.
Kaholo and Robola must have known I was their biggest fan because they swam towards me as if I had had fish. After the introductory period, they jumped over our heads. I got a hug and kiss from Robola, and also learned how to have Kaholo talk to me.
This was by far the most magical experience of my life. Next time your parents say “Maybe some other day”, have faith in them. Your dreams are important to them too, and they will do whatever they can to make it possible, because dreams can come true.

24.(8分) Scientists think that growing garden grass could be the secret to solving our energy needs, and we may soon be able to replace our gasoline with “grassoline”.
The team, including experts from Cardiff University in Wales, has shown that hydrogen can be taken from grass in useful amounts with the help of sunlight and a cheap catalyst(催化剂) —something that speeds up a chemical reaction without being used up.
It is the first time that this has been shown and it could lead to a sustainable(可持续的) way of making hydrogen, reported Asian News International. This could be an important kind of renewable energy because it is high in energy and it does not give out harmful gases when it is burned.
Study co-author Michael Bowker said, “This is really a green source of energy. Hydrogen is seen as an important future energy carrier as the world moves from fossil fuels to renewable energy, and our research has shown that even garden grass could be a good way of getting it.”
Cellulose(纤维素), which is a key part of plants and the biopolymer(生物聚合物) found in the largest numbers on the earth, could be a great source of hydrogen.
In its study, the team looked at the possibility of getting hydrogen from cellulose using sunlight and a simple catalyst.
This is called photocatalysis(光催化作用) and in it, the sunlight starts the catalyst, which then makes cellulose and water into hydrogen. The researchers studied the effectiveness of three metal-based catalysts, of which nickel(镍) especially interested the researchers, as it is a much more common metal than gold and palladium(钯) and it saves more money.
According to Bowker, producing hydrogen from cellulose using photocatalysis has not been studied in detail. The team’s research shows that large amounts of hydrogen can be produced using this method with the help of a bit of sunlight and a cheap catalyst.
The study shows that it is effective to use real grass taken from a garden. “This is important as it avoids the need to separate and clean up cellulose, which can be both difficult and costly,” said Bowker.
1、What are needed to get hydrogen from grass?
A.A catalyst and palladium. B.Water and cellulose.
    C.Sunlight and a biopolymer. D.Sunlight and a catalyst.
2、Why is the new way of making hydrogen considered significant?
A.It is cheap, green and sustainable.
B.It is the best to produce the renewable energy.
C.It is more productive and efficient than other methods.
D.It can replace the way to make fossil fuels completely.
3、Why does nickel interest the researchers in making hydrogen from cellulose?
A.It can produce the largest amount of hydrogen.
B.It can avoid separating and cleaning up cellulose.
C.It is more common than other metals and costs less.
D.It works quicker than other metals during photocatalysis.
4、What does the author intend to tell us mainly in this passage?
A.Catalysts that could be taken from grass.
B.A new way of making hydrogen from cellulose.
C.The potential of hydrogen as a renewable energy.
D.The connection between hydrogen and photocatalysis.
25.(10分)In the last few weeks, donations have been mailed to community organizations in and near Redford Township by the sender who only identifies as “Anonymous - 1679”, according to My Fox Detroit.
So far, envelopes, each filled with $1,000 cash, have been sent to the local library, an animal welfare non-profit, a civic and leadership training group, a credit union and the Redford Goodfellows, a group that helps needy families get holiday meals and gifts for their children.
There is one clue about the identity of the giver. According to the Observer & Eccentric, the Community Choice Credit Union in Redford received the first envelope, which also included a riddle: “Know the clue, Know the who, Anonymous - 1679.”
Spread around one community, the donations could make a serious impact.
The credit union told the paper that the donation will go to their foundation, which gives up to $100,000 in college scholarships to Michigan high school graduates each year.
Tail Waggers 1990 in nearby Livonia helps owners provide for their pets, offering low-cost vaccinations, a pet food pantry and assistance for pets with serious health problems. Their donation will go toward their new animal clinic, they told Fox.
Cindy Doyle, secretary for the Redford Goodfellows, said that their $1,000 donation will likely cover food, clothes and presents for 10 families; last year the organization served 225 families total.
“That money will go a long way to brighten the Christmas of several children this year,” the Redford Township Police posted on Facebook, on behalf of their department and the Good fellows.
“To that generous person... Thank You!”
Anonymous 1679 has given more than money — he or she has also directed attention to some of the organizations helping the community, and may even inspire others to give. 29、Dear Smith,
I’m Li Hua, a senior student of this school. I’m writing to offer my proposal concerning the “Green Campus” activity to be carried out in our school.
In my humble opinion, to create a green campus, what we need to do is not only to plant more trees and flowers to beautify the environment, but also to create an energy-efficient and resource-cycled campus. Everyone on campus should be informed to form the habit of using resources properly and saving energy. It would be better to organize some speech contests or knowledge competitions related to environmental protection to arouse students’ awareness of keeping the campus green, because it needs our joint efforts to realize this goal. And we can achieve it by doing pieces of small acts in daily life, such as turning off the light when leaving the classroom and take the initiative to pick up the waste paper on the ground.
I hope you will find these suggestions useful, and I would be ready to discuss further details with you if necessary.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
