Hwever, the effects are nt s strng, and the researchers warn this shuld hardly be held up as a way t ffset weak mental health cnditins like depressin.Lead researcher Nichlas Cles said:“Ordinary wisdm tells us that we can feel a little happier if we simply smile.Or that we can get urselves in a mre serius md if we frwn. But psychlgists have actually disagreed abut this idea fr ver 100 years.”
The research team says the disagreements became mre prnunced in 2016,when 17 teams f researchers failed t cpy a well-knwn experiment shwing that the physical act f smiling can make peple feel happier.Cles said:“Sme studies have nt fund evidence that facial expressins can influence emtinal feelings. But we can’t fcus n the results f any ne study.Psychlgists have been testing this idea since the early 1970s,s we wanted t lk at all the evidence.”
Using a data technique called meta-analysis(荟萃分析),the team cllected data frm 138 studies testing mre than 11,000 peple frm all arund the wrld. The results f the meta-analysis suggest that facial expressins have a small influence n feelings.
