For most of our history, humans have been short, a study has found. Until around 150 years ago, few people grew taller than 170 cm – not even those who had ready access to food.
The new discovery adds to growing evidence that being unusually short isn’t a strong proof of poor nutrition. Instead of being a sign of a good diet, growing taller may reflect competition in some societies.
Christiane Scheffler combined an existing data set of more than 6000 prehistoric human remains with various studies of more recent historical populations from Europe and the US. He also included his own data on 1666 present-day schoolchildren from Indonesia.
In the prehistoric populations, the maximum height for men was 165 to 170 cm, while women reached 160 cm. Today, by comparison, men in England have an average height of around 175 cm, while for women it is about 162 cm. The average heights of men and women are several centimetres higher in Germany.
He found that similar patterns to the prehistoric heights held in the historical populations. Even a group of upper-class German boys from the late 1800s were all much shorter than modern children, so much so that over half of them would be considered short by modern standards.
But there is great difference between modern countries. The Indonesian schoolchildren in the study were shorter than similarly aged children from the US, despite good food.
If food availability isn’t the key to height, what is? Scheffler believes growing tall is more or less connected with the hope of a better life. In societies where it is possible to move up through the social classes, opportunities favour those who reach a greater height.
S. V. Subramanian at Harvard University isn’t convinced by this explanation. His team argue that the best sign of a child’s height is the height of their parents. This suggests that the influence of social factors is limited.
Subramanian agrees that being unusually short isn’t a perfect sign of poor diet. A person’s nutritional condition should be judged by looking at their diet not their height.

For the past three years, I’ve been dealing with a personal challenge that caused a great deal of stress. When the problem first appeared, I found myself reacting to the story from the place of being a sufferer. But it wasn’t long before I realized how unhelpful my response was and decided to change track. I turned to a rule – the 51 per cent rule.
The 51 per cent rule can be applied when you find yourself in a difficult situation where you feel strongly that you are in the right and someone else is not. According to the rule, whatever the given challenge, your starting point becomes you taking 51 per cent responsibility for the problem. This often stops people in their tracks and gets them to start thinking differently in the moment.
For this exercise, it’s important to set aside time to use pen and paper.
● Start by writing out the question: What is my 51 per cent ownership of this situation?
● Set a limit of five minutes and write without editing. Read over the writing and mark anything that stands out or makes you think. What do you notice?
● What are your notes that would bring about a more positive or better outcome for everyone?
Slowing down the pace using writing provides space to self-reflect, so your thoughts have more of a chance to see new possibilities and solutions. My advice when approaching this exercise is to be honest in your reflections – it’s the only way of getting a real payoff.
By allowing the writing to light up where you take responsibility, you can realize and accept your new awareness without beating yourself up. Your writing is your private space and what you write does not necessarily need to be shared with others. Instead, use your brain and take everything into consideration to ensure the quality of the choices you make. Remember, we never know the full story until we have walked in somebody else’s shoes.

A MIRACLE

M: Not yet. Do you know where my blue shirt is? I don’t want to go in this brown one.
W: It’s right there in the cupboard with your other shirts. Why isn’t Sara here yet? She said she’d be here by 7:00 pm. Without her taking care of the kids, we can’t go to the Smiths’ tonight.
M: Don’t worry. I’m sure she’ll be here any minute now. It takes us just about twenty minutes to get there. We won’t be late as long as we leave by 7:10 pm.

W: My history teacher gave us a surprising quiz and I couldn’t remember anything. My mind went totally blank. I couldn’t believe it.
M: That happened to me once. It was a math quiz, but it wasn’t a surprise. I just got the date of the test wrong.
W: What grade did you get? A or D?
M: No, I got a C.
W: At least a C is passing. I’m going to get an F.
M: You need to take it easy. Why don’t you go home and have a good rest?
W: I have another test at two. I need to go to the library to hit the books.
M: What a day you’re having!

M: Well, yes. I’d like to make an appointment to see him. It’s Harrison White here.
W: Just a second, Mr White. I’ll look in the diary. So… when is convenient for you?
M: Sometime today, if possible. I hear he’ll be away tomorrow.
W: Yes, that’s right. He’ll be on a business trip for a week.
M: I need to talk about my new program with him before he leaves. It’s urgent. So would this afternoon be OK?
W: Let me see… OK. Mr Stone is free this afternoon after 3:00.
M: Well, 3:00 is a bit difficult. But I could make it after 3:30.
W: So… shall we say a quarter to four this afternoon in Mr Stone’s office?
M: That’s great. Thanks.

W: Good morning, doctor. I’ve been feeling tired recently.
M: I wonder if you are getting enough sleep.
W: Every night I can sleep about three to five hours, but it’s not a deep sleep. I wake up around 6 am every morning because of muscle pain. I’ve also been getting headaches very easily.
M: It sounds like you’re under a lot of stress. Are you working too hard?
W: No, I don’t think it’s that. Recently I’ve been worried about some personal matters, though.
M: Well, stress can be best controlled by taking care of your body. Drinking lots of water should help with your headaches.
W: OK.
M: And I would also recommend taking some sleeping pills, just to make sure you get enough rest at night. Why don’t you try all these for a week, and then come back and see me?
W: OK. Thank you very much.

W: Toasts are given on a variety of occasions. When you are asked to give a toast, keep that person as the center of the attention. Here are some tips of making a great toast speech.
First, outline the speech. Even if you think you are the best speech writer, you know, there’s always a chance that you will forget something during your speech. A small note card with an outline can help you focus on the event and the person. Writing can also help you organize your speech. Second, introduce yourself to start the speech. Not everyone at the event knows who you are. In the brief introduction, mention how you know the person you are toasting. Third, tell a short story about the person you are toasting. Fourth, refer to the purpose of the event. Congratulate the person that you are giving the toast for, and end the toast. Lastly, keep your toast short. This is the key to making a toast speech. The focus of the event is on the person you are toasting and not on your toast itself.
