“With faithfulness, I will try my best to aid the physicians in their work, and devote myself to helping those patients who I attend to. Every day, nurses take these words from the Florence Nightingale oath(誓言)to heart, ensuring their patients’ welfare—but some nurses, like Jennifer Smith, take that oath a step further.
Last November, Jennifer got an urgent call from John Burley, one of her patients who had been hospitalized with pneumonia(肺炎). With no other family members to step in to help, a local animal shelter adopted his dog Boomer.
“I came into work on Monday morning after Thanksgiving, the phone ringing at 7 am,” Jennifer recalled. “John was calling from his ward(病房), saying ‘Boomer was in the shelter! Boomer was in the shelter! Aware that the 12-year-old dog that he had had since it was born meant all the world to him, she said yes without any hesitation, when John asked Jennifer if she could take care of Boomer. She said that knowing his beloved dog was safe would make a huge positive impact on John’s recovery.
The first thing Jennifer had to do was to track Boomer down and she finally found him at the Rome Humane Society. The following day, she drove to the shelter and carried out the adoption plan, letting John know Boomer was doing well. What’s more, Jennifer was given the green light to bring Boomer to work with her. During his stay in hospital, Jennifer brought Boomer to visit his owner several times a day. The cute dog soon became a favorite with staff and patients there.
To Jennifer, keeping 60-year-old John and Boomer together is just a natural act of helping people. “There are just so many worries in the world right now. If I can take one worry away from John, that’s the least I can do,” she told CNN.

A study from Denmark suggests that growing up in the countryside may help you stay in good mental health as an adult. The research involving nearly a million people found children, who live in green areas, are 55% less likely to develop a mental health disorder in later life.
The researchers believe green spaces help create friendly communities where people enjoy talking to others, as well as encouraging people to exercise. This helps improve a child’s cognitive(认知的)development, which may positively affect their mental health.
The research was led by Dr Kristine Engemann from Aarhus University in Denmark. The researchers used satellite data collected between 1985 and 2013 to assess(评估)the green space around the participants’ childhood homes. This data was then compared against the risk of developing mental disorders later in life. “After mastering a huge amount of data,as well as other information such as house location and disease diagnoses from Denmark, we compared it with satellite images which show green space of individual when growing up,” Dr Engemann said.
Results showed that those who grew up surrounded by lots of green space were less at risk of a mental health problem. Dr Engemann said, “We find that the longer you have been surrounded by green space from birth and up to the age of 10,the lower the risk of developing a mental disorder. There is increasing evidence that the natural environment plays a more important role in mental health than thought before. Our study gives us a better understanding of its importance across the broader population. ”
Noise, air pollution, infections(传染病)and poor social and economic conditions increase the risk of a mental disorder, according to the study. The researchers are calling on city planners to design greener cities to improve the public’s mental health.
    28. What does the study find about green areas?
    A. They affect adults mentally more than kids.
    B. They influence kids’ mental development.
    C. They can help create peaceful communities.
    D. They are good for kids with mental problems.
    29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
    A. The process of the research.
    B. The significance of the research.
    C. The participants of the research.
    D. The assessment of the research.
    30. Which of the followings might Dr Engemann support?
    A. A further research needs to be conducted.
    B. Green areas can help cure mental problems.
    C. Green space throughout childhood matters a lot.

We have scenic beauty all around us, but looking around, much of it is covered with food packages, plastic bottles, and other rubbish. Despite warning signs and boards that constantly say “No littering here!”, people are unwilling to understand the significance of keeping public places clean. However, Khao Yai National Park in Thailand has taken an unusual step to make sure tourists clean up their own trash.
The park has begun sending trash back to the litterbugs(乱扔垃圾者)with a polite note saying “You forgot these things at Khao Yai National Park” to remind people that littering in public places is against the rules. Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa, minister of Natural Resources and Environment of Thailand, posted a series of pictures on Facebook related with the new step. He posted a picture of a trash-filled box that was ready to be shipped with the words—“YOUR TRASH—WE’LL SEND IT BACK TO YOU.”
Varawut explained that throwing about trash could endanger wild animals, which might eat it by mistake when searching for food. He said littering in the park could carry a fine of up to 500,000 Thai Baht (about $16,000 U.S. dollars), a prison sentence of up to five years, or both. And the offending(违法的)visitors will also be banned from returning to the park.
The officials matched the trash to its owners by taking address details from the camping equipment rental forms. To make the process easier, people will be allowed to enter the park only after writing down their address.
“We think Khao Yai National Park’s new step has made a great contribution to maintaining our country’s natural resources,” Charinya Kiatlapnachai, director of the tourism authority of Thailand, told The Washington Post. “This gesture is an effective way to ensure we all do our part to help our country remain clean, safe and beautiful.”
    32. What is the new step of Khao Yai National Park to control littering?
    A. Reporting litterbugs to the police.
    B. Forcing litterbugs to clean up the park.
    C. Posting photos of litterbugs on Facebook.
    D. Warning and returning the litterbugs trash.
    33. What punishment will litterbugs get if they litter in the park?
    A. Their behavior will be exposed in social media.
    B. They will not be allowed to visit the park again.
C They could be charged up to 500,000 U.S. dollars.
    D. They could be sentenced to over 5 years in prison.
    34. How can officials find the owners of trash?
    A. By referring to their rental forms.
    B. By viewing cameras inside the park.
    C. By matching finger prints on the trash.
    D. By contacting them through email.
    35. What docs Charinya Kiatlapnachai think of Khao Yai National Park’s action?
    A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Objective. D. Unclear.

It was the first day of the new school year. Sylvia entered the music room at a high school. The 65-year-old music teacher was known for being strict in class. Many students were afraid of her and not interested in this class. They attended music class only because they needed the credit. But Sylvia took her job seriously.
That day, she walked to the piano in the corner and started leading them into a song to get them warmed up. And she prevented those trying to joke around right away, which might explain why some students didn’t like her teaching style.
Soon enough, her class was almost over and one student asked Sylvia curiously, “What do you like to listen to at home?” “Surely, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky,” another student laughed before Sylvia could answer, making some others laugh. “I actually like a lot of pop music, and even some of the things you listen to nowadays. But I prefer to listen to classic music,” Sylvia replied, smiling at the kids.
Some returned the smile and started asking about some singers and bands. But the bell rang before she could answer all their questions and they had to leave. However, it seemed like that the fear in her students had relieved a bit since that day. Soon enough, the students got used to her and started taking her lessons more seriously.
However, one day, Sylvia’s husband suddenly died. She took two weeks off from work. Feeling sad and hopeless, she didn’t even listen to music anymore.
Before long, her students learned what happened to their music teacher. Soon, they decided to organize a performance and practice playing certain music that could be in memory of her husband and cheer her up. When Sylvia returned to the class, they would surprise her by playing the music. After making the decision, the students chose the proper music.

M: Hi, Lisa. I heard you had spent two weeks in France. How was your time there?
W: It was much better than expected. You know, I can’t eat some food. So I was afraid I wouldn’t have a good time there.
M: So how did you eat there?
W: Well, in the first week, my parents and I rented an apartment with a kitchen in Paris. In this way, we could cook our own meals.
M: But wasn’t that too annoying? You’d spend a lot of time cooking.
W: That was really a bit annoying. So we just cooked for two days. And on the following days of the week, we just ate outdoors. Luckily, most restaurants in France seemed very careful about customers’ food. So I could easily choose food I could eat.
M: That’s really great. So where did you spend the second week?
W: On a ship. The meals were great and the chef carefully checked everything I ate.

W: Jack, congratulations on winning the Best Actor Award tonight.
M: Thanks! Well, I enjoy being famous, but sometimes I struggle with it —being constantly in the public eye can be difficult.
W: That’s understandable. When did you first know you wanted to be an actor?
M: It was at school, when I played Orsino in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.
W: Was that your big break?
M: No, my first major role was in New York Summertime.
W: How did your life change after that?
M: I was suddenly very busy. I would often end up working late into the night. One night, while I was filming High Seas, I had too much to drink and decided to drive home. I had a car accident and badly injured my right leg. The worst thing was how I felt about myself. I couldn’t believe I’d been so stupid!
W: You also lost your role in High Seas, didn’t you?
M: Yes. The accident was a real turning point in my life. After that, I didn’t touch alcohol again for almost a year. Then I met my wife Kerri and had two wonderful twin boys. They have really helped me to accept and appreciate life on and off stage.
    听下面一段独白,回答第17至第20四个小题。现在,你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。

W: About two years ago, I went with my class on our first school trip—five days in Paris! There were about thirty of us and four teachers. We all went in one big coach from our school in London. The teachers told us to be at school at four thirty in the morning. Everyone was there on time, but the coach didn’t arrive until five o’clock and we didn’t leave until five thirty! We were very cold and tired. Anyway, the coach was very comfortable and we watched a DVD and listened to some music on the journey. We had some sandwiches and drinks, so we went straight to Paris without stopping. The hotel was very old, but our room was nice and the bed was great! I shared the room with three other girls. When we went shopping, I tried to practice my French a few times but sometimes I didn’t know the right words and spoke in English instead! The shops were great. I bought lots of presents, such as a dress for my mother, a bag for my dad and a T-shirt for my little sister! I think what I enjoyed most was the boat trip. I took lots of photos with my friends and the wonderful art galleries.
I was sad to leave Paris. I had a wonderful time there.

The Activity Of Protecting Chinese Cultural Relics
An activity themed “Protect Chinese Cultural Relics” was held in our school last week. It was aimed at encouraging students to realize more and more cultural relics are facing the danger of disappearing, thus they can attach importance to protecting them.
Various activities are included, such as listening to the speech on the protection of cultural relics, visiting the city museum and learning about the related laws. Both teachers and students participated in them actively.
Through the activity, not only can we understand more about Chinese culture, but also we can realize the significance and urgency of protecting them.
    第二节:
    参考范文:
In the following days, they were busy preparing for the performance. They prepared musical instruments needed for the music. Then they separated the class into different groups, with some playing instruments and others singing. When the task was assigned, the students began to practice the music hard. Although it was challenging, they worked together, not giving up. Finally, it was time for Sylvia to return to school. Still sad and hopeless, Sylvia headed to school. And early before her class began, the students reached the music room, ready for the performance.
When Sylvia entered the music room, the beautiful music sounded. She was surprised to find her students were standing in the shape of a heart, and playing a beautiful tune for her. As her students finished the music, tears filled her eyes. Her students approached her one by one, hugging her tightly. Sylvia thanked them for their kindness. After a few minutes, she wiped her tears. “OK, let’s get back to class!” she said, and her voice was still emotional. Everyone laughed, for they knew their strict teacher was back, which made them happy.
