She had to work with a human translator to help him communicate with those who didn’t know sign language, and it stuck with her.After leaving the laboratory, she began to think if she could invent a device that could translate American Sign Language into spoken English. She talked it with her good friend Sarvnaz Ale Mohammad.Her friend showed a great interest and the two got down to work. They signed up for an online eight-week machine learning course designed by Stanford University. They also turned to local university professors who directed them to more resources. The teens also reached out to people they knew who used American Sign Language to ask them about their preferences. With great efforts, they invented a device for deaf people to wear on their hands. Because of the device, in August 2020, the girls won a competition and took home$5,000. They earned$10,000 a year later when they won a national competition.The teens say they hope to use the money to continue experimenting with the device.
