Life on the ISS
Ø Waking up
Mission control wakes the crew up by turning on the lights at 6 a.m. The day starts the same as it would on Earth. While you wet your brush with water that will stick to its bristles (刷毛), the toothbrush and the tube of toothpaste can be left to float in the air, which is rarely seen on earth. After breakfast, the crew calls down to mission control for a planning conference to run through the day’s schedule.
Ø Maintenance
Then it is time for household chores. Most days, the ISS requires routine maintenance and safety checks. One day it might be moving some supplies; another day could involve repairing an essential piece of equipment.
Ø A visit to the gym
One of the main aims of the ISS is to discover how weightlessness affects the human body. Astronauts lose muscle strength in space and are more likely to break their bones once they return to Earth. To slow this process down, each crew member is required to exercise for at least two hours a day.
Ø Mealtimes
Food comes in several forms. Dehydrated (脱水的) meals come in small bags, and spices are also available, just like on the table back home. But salt and pepper have been transformed into liquids.
Ø Experiments
Each astronaut spends part of their day on experiments in the labs on the ISS, so that scientists back on Earth can better understand how the conditions in space affect things. Mice, ants, fish and worms have all been sent to the station to see how zero-gravity affects their bodies and behavior.
Ø Free time
Once the crew has finished their scheduled tasks for the day, they are free to spend any remaining time they have left from their evening. Perhaps the most popular pastime is to simply watch the Earth spinning silently below the station.
21. According to the article, ISS astronauts’ daily routine is different from ours on Earth in terms of the way they _____.
A. work out B. having their meals
C. brush their teeth D. do household chores
22. According to the article, astronauts are NOT allowed to _____ on the ISS.
A. do experiments on animals B. have pepper with their food
C. decide their own work schedules D. carry out routine maintenance alone
23. What can we learn from the article?
A. The ISS acts as a scientific research lab in outer space.
B. Mission control is of little importance to the success of a space mission.
C. In the long term, zero-gravity has no negative effect on the human body.
D. Astronauts rarely watch the Earth from the ISS for fear of getting homesick.

Scared of needles? Then you might be interested in a new injection-free (免注射) way of taking the COVID-19 vaccine. By simply inhaling (吸气), your invisible shield against corona-virus is formed. It’s as simple as sipping your favorite bubble tea!
The new dose is an aerosolized (雾化的) version of the current COVID-19 vaccine. In other words, the only difference between the new vaccine and the current one is the way the drug is delivered. China’s CanSino Biologics, the company that produces the aerosolized vaccine, said on Sept 4 that it has been permitted for emergency use by the country’s top drug regulator (药物监管机构). It is the first aerosolized vaccine to be approved for public use in China. The vaccine will be used as a booster (加强针) only, according to the company.
An aerosolized COVID-19 vaccine is not only easy to administer (给与药物), but it also offers protection in a unique way, said experts. Sunney Xie Xiaoliang, a biophysical chemist at Peking University and academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, said during a recent forum in Beijing that aerosolized vaccine could be an effective way to protect against respiratory (呼吸道的) diseases in the future. Corona-viruses usually enter the human body through the nose and mouth. Delivering vaccine this way can increase immune responses at the location where viruses enter, according to Xie.
A recent study published in August revealed more advantages. It showed that when given as a booster, the aerosolized vaccine stimulate a stronger antibody response than an injection would. It thus claimed that aerosolized vaccine may be a valuable addition to the existing vaccines.
Marty Moore, co-founder of Meissa Vaccines in Califormia, US told Nature that the approval of the aerosolized vaccine in China confirmed the need for vaccines delivered through the mouth and nose. “That’s the direction we need to go globally, and the United States needs to catch up,” Moore said.
24. What does the article tell us about the aerosolized vaccine?
A. It will only be used as a booster.
B. It will replace injection in the future.
C. It will be widely used in hospitals after Sept. 4.
D. It is the first approved aerosolized vaccine in China.
25. Why could the aerosolized vaccine be an effective way to protect against respiratory diseases?
A. It offers effective and long-lasting protection.
B. It is easy and simple for the human body to absorb.
C. It makes the entire human body react to the virus quickly.
D. It could block the spread of viruses where they enter the body.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The limits of the aerosolized vaccine.
B. Another benefit of the aerosolized vaccine.
C. The unique characteristics of the aerosolized vaccine.
D. Difference between the aerosolized vaccine and injection.
27. What is Moore’s attitude towards the aerosolized vaccine?
A. Doubtful B. Critical C. Positive D. Opposed

Catherine Commale has long known what it is like to greet admiring crowds of kids, to have strangers beg for her autograph (亲笔签名), and to be featured in books and on TV shows. And yet most of her fellow Americans have never heard of the girl, who has helped to save millions of lives in African villages from malaria. The story began when she was only five.
On a spring night in 2006, Katherine’s mother, Lynda, watched Malaria: Fever Wars. The documentary described people who were fighting the mosquito-borne disease that has been blamed for millions of deaths in Africa and elsewhere. The next morning, she told her daughter about the program over breakfast. The little girl was particularly troubled to hear that every 30 seconds a child would end up dying of malaria. Lynda switched the conversation to things they could do to help, like donating mosquito nets (蚊帐).
At first, Katherine tried raising money by selling her old items in the flea market, but she was disappointed at how little she could gather in this way. Soon, she and her younger brother Joseph designed a program to explain to other children how a simple mosquito net, which typically only cost around $10 each, could protect a sleeping child. They took their show to Katherine’s Sunday school and then on to other churches. The idea took off. When that first effort ended, Katherine and her family donated $1,500 to the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign to buy mosquito nets.
Katherine’s efforts caught the attention of many international celebrities, such as David Beckham and Bill Gate. When she was six, she attended the first Malaria Awareness Day observance (纪念仪式) at the White House, and later a Clinton Global Initiative event where she met former U.S. President Bill Clinton. While Katherine’s pace slowed down as she entered middle school, she rose to fame around the world. She has even been featured in a board game beside the youngest Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. “I’m not Malala whatsoever,” she said. “It’s just an act of kindness.”
For Katherine, despite having raised about three million dollars for Nothing But Nets and seen the death rate from malaria decrease from every 30 seconds to every two minutes, the adventure that started at her kitchen table is one that she continues to pursue to this day.
28. According to the article, which of the following statements about Katherine is NOT true?
A. She is now in her early twenties.
B. She learned about malaria from a documentary.
C. She isn’t a well-known name in the United States.
D. She was upset about the death rate from malaria in 2006.
29. Paragraph 3 mainly talks about ______.
A. how Katherine got full support from her friends
B. how Katherine managed to make her first donation
C. what lies behind Katherine’s devotion to charity work
D. what prevented Katherine from raising enough money
30. We can learn from Paragraph 4 that Katherine _____.
A. felt proud to have met former U.S. President Bill Clinton
B. got to know Bill Gates on the first Malaria Awareness Day
C. remained modest even though people spoke highly of her goodness
D. wasn’t able to continue with her charity work after entering middle school
31. Which of the following proverbs best describes Katherine’s story?
A. Better later than never. B. All that glitters is not gold.
C. All good things come to an end. D. Actions speak louder than words.

It was this very morning thatwe know what Crossi’s lifewas like. When I entered the school this morning, the headmaster had not yet arrived. Three or four boys were abusing poor Crossi who has a dead arm, and whose mother sells vegetables.
They were beating him with the teacher’s ruler, hitting him in his face with chestnut shells, and were making him out to be a monster. And Crossi, alone on the end of the bench, and quite pale, began to be affected by it, gazing now at one and now at another with pitiful eyes, that they might leave him in peace. But the others mocked(嘲笑) him worse than ever, and he began to tremble with anger. All at once, Franti sprang upon a bench and pretending that he was carrying a basket on each arm. he imitated the mother of Crossi when she used to come to wait for her son at the door. Many began to laugh loudly.Crossi’s eyes turned red and his fists were clenched so tightly that his nails dug deep into the palms. Then suddenly, Crossi lost his head, seized an inkstand (墨水台) and threw it hard at the other’s head with all his strength. But Franti escaped and the inkstand struck the headmaster, who entered at that moment. The ink spread everywhere on the headmaster’s uniform. There were silence while one might count ten—it was as plain as a day that the headmaster was gathering his anger. It was obvious that he was trying to contain his anger but every fiber of his being betrayed him.
All the students flew to their places, and became silent in terror. The headmaster, quite pale, went to his table and said in a low voice: “Who did it?” No one replied. The headmaster cried out in a much higher voice, “Who is it?” Then all the students froze, still silent.

The four students cast a scared look at one another, then their heads dropped even lower. “If youstruck a weak person who could not defend himself like this, you have committed one of the most shameful acts in the world.” said the headmaster quite seriously, then he put the ruler back.
①被欺凌孩子的主动认错;② 校长了解事件的经过;③校长安慰鼓励被欺凌的孩子;

1. 【原文】M: Are you waiting for a bus, Claire?
W: Yeah, I've been here for 40 minutes. I should have just taken the subway to downtown.
M: Hop in. I'll give you a ride.
W: Really? Thanks.
2.【原文】W: Can't I tempt you with more food?
M: Oh, Mrs. Black, your cooking is amazing. I definitely could eat more, but if I had one more steak,I would have to run at least 3 miles to burn the extra calories.
3. 【原文】M: Why don't you buy this fashionable dress for the party, Jackie? It's on sale.
W: But it's a backless dress! I don't want to be laughed at by others. I just need a modest one.
4. 【原文】M: Susan,it's me. We'll meet at the north gate of the department store at 7:30 p.m.,right?
W: Sorry, Frank, I need to work overtime for about half an hour. Can we meet one hour later than scheduled?
M: Sure.
5. 【原文】M: So this Guernica painted by Pablo Picasso, why do you like it?
W:Well,it's about the Spanish Civil War, showing a bombing attack on a town. I like it because it really makes you think about what happened on that day.
6. 【原文】M:The Jasmine Hotel seems pretty ideal. It provides a full English breakfast and is not too far away from the beach.
W:Yeah, but I have already contacted their receptionist, and she said there's no double room available in the next three days.
M:That's too bad. How about this Blue Mountain Hotel? It's a five-star hotel.
W:Well, everything looks very good there, but don't you think it's a little expensive? 500 dollars per night. Geez.
M:It's our honeymoon, and I want our trip to be perfect.
7.【原文】M: What do you usually have for breakfast?
W:Nothing much. My mum makes breakfast at seven o'clock and that's too early for me! I usually get a cake or something on my way to school.
M:And then you have French fries or hamburgers for lunch?
W:Yes,nearly every day. I love them!
M:They're not very good for you,are they? I usually eat a lot of salad for lunch. It's healthy. And I drink lots of water. It's better than juice.
W:I don't like salad very much, and I don't like water. And I think tea and coffee taste horrible. I prefer lemonade. And I love sweets too. But I don't like ice cream very much. It brings a pain in my teeth.
8. 【原文】M: Hi, Maggie. I haven't seen you for a long time. Did you do anything nice over the summer?
W:Bruce and I went on an amazing vacation to Malta, which is a small island in the Mediterranean.
M:Sounds great!
W:Our hotel was only a short distance from the beach. The beach itself, which was small, was not good enough for swimming. However, the boats at the harbor were brightly painted and they were really beautiful. The home-cooked food was fresh and absolutely delicious.
M:You're making me hungry!
W:We also explored the whole island, which was full of honey-colored buildings. The capital city,Valletta, has a lot of beautiful churches. We got lost a couple of times, but the friendly locals helped us.
M: Mmm . .. that was nice! I think I'll go there next summer.
W: Well,if you do, you must visit the small island of Gozo.
9. 【原文】W:Max,I want to buy Robert a pet for his birthday. But you know, our brother likes neither cats nor dogs.

M:His favorite is birds. How about buying a parrot for him?
W:I'm afraid it's not good Mum hates keeping birds because they make a lot of noise.
M:Robert is also interested in little mice. What about buying him a mouse?
W:No, it's impossible. Don't you know that our sister Cathy has just got a pet cat?
M: Then why don't you buy him a rabbit?
W:But I think rabbits are smelly. What about a goldfish? They're very beautiful and easy to look after.
M:No,boys don't usually love goldfish. I suggest you buy him a snake. It's very unusual. I'm fond of that.
W:No, I don't think it's a good idea. You know, I'm terribly afraid of snakes.
M:I've got a good idea. Let's ask him and find out what he really likes and then we can go to the market to get one for him.
W: That sounds OK.
10. 【原文】W:Welcome to Student Life! Today we're going to talk about setting up a project of student jobs in your school.Having students do different jobs around the school is a great way to prepare them for life in the real world. It encourages them to be responsible and also helps them learn new tasks and gain experience. However,it's important to get students excited about the project, so the first thing you should do is let students know this project.Get the headmaster to make an announcement explaining the project.OK? Then decide on the jobs you want and write out the descriptions of the skills and responsibilities needed for each position. Some typical jobs are Classroom Assistants,Recycling Officers and Computer Assistants. Next, ask students to apply for the jobs. Students should be encouraged to write letters of application for the job they are interested in. This is a great way to practice letter writing skills! And don't forget, you should make sure that students are guided by a teacher so that they take their responsibilities seriously.A committee then reviews all the applications and gives jobs to the most suitable applicants. Finally, it's important to get opinions from the students about the project, to find out which jobs are successful and which don't go so well.
