We know the mosquito very well. Mosquitoes fly everywhere. They can be found almost all over the world, and there are more than 2,500 kinds of them.
No one likes the mosquito. But the mosquito may decide that she loves you. She? Yes, she. It’s true that male mosquito doesn’t bite(咬) and only the female mosquito bites because she needs blood to lay eggs. She is always looking for things or people she wants to bite. You’re different from the others!
If the mosquito likes you, she lands on your body without letting you know. She bites you so quickly and quietly that you may not feel anything different. After she bites, you will have an itch(痒) on your body because she puts something from her mouth together with your blood. By the time the itching begins, she has flown away.
And then what happens? Well, after delicious dinner, the mosquito feels tired. She just wants to find a place to have a good rest. There, on a leaf or a wall, she begins to lay eggs, hundreds of eggs.

Linda was my best friend—like the sister I never had. We did everything together: piano lessons, movies, swimming, horseback riding.
When I was 13, my family moved away. Linda and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special time—like my wedding(婚礼) and Linda’s. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new homes, and we wrote less often. One day a card I sent went back, stamped “Address(地址) unknown”. I had no idea how to find Linda. Over the years, I missed Linda very much. I wanted to share happiness of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sadness when my brother and then my mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Linda could fill.
One day I was reading a newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked very much like Linda whose last name was Wagman—Linda’s married name. “ There must be thousands of Wagmans” I thought, but I still wrote to her.
She called as soon as she got my letter. “Mrs. Tobin!” she said excitedly, “Linda Evans is my mother.”
Minutes later I heard a voice that I knew very much. Now the empty place in my heart is filled. And there is one thing that I know for sure: we won’t lose each other again.

After the couple heard my reason, they understood the problem, so they laughed and were no longer angry.

A few years ago, I was taking up a job at a local shop. While giving an old woman an ice cream she bought, I found she had a box of what seemed to be purple tomatoes. I wanted to know what they were really were. But I didn’t know how to start my question. Would she refuse my curiosity directly or just keep silent, even with a look of disgust(反感)?
After a struggle(斗争) in my heart, I decided to encourage myself to catch the last minute. As I handed her the things, I said, “Those tomatoes look delicious! What kind are they?”
She smiled and replied, “Here, have some!” Within seconds I had a lot of tomatoes. “Oh, no, you don’t need to give me any!” I said. Those tomatoes looked expensive. “Here, have more,” she insisted(坚持说) , and now I had six of the fattest, prettiest tomatoes I had ever seen. I tried to refuse, “ Really, you don’t have to give me any, but I appreciate it.”
The woman smiled again and said, “ I hope you enjoy them. And to answer your question, it’s an heirloom breed(传家宝品种)that my mom used to plant. So they aren’t like the ones you get in the store.”
I thanked her again, and she left. She was like an adult in a story: I gave her ice cream and she gave me purple tomatoes.

Dear Jim,
Mr. Liu is our English teacher. He graduated from Beijing Foreign Studies University. His English is very good. Mr. Liu is middle-aged and handsome. At class, he is good at asking us to do pair work, group work, and other activities. He always encourages us to speak up and tells us “Don’t be shy, let’s try.” After a semester, almost all the learners in our class are interested in English although they don’t like English at the start. With Mr. Liu’s help, many learners are making fast progress in their English learning. Mr. Liu is the best teacher in my mind.
About two weeks later, a box of vegetables was dropped off in my office. A note was attached to the box, which read: “To my friend, here are more purple tomatoes. And sincerely I am inviting you to my vegetable garden. I am sure you will like it.” I shared the purple tomatoes and the moving story with my colleagues, who were touched by what the old woman had done.
I decide to accept her invitation to visit her vegetable garden. I called the telephone number on the note. After about half an hour’s drive, I arrived at the vegetable garden, where various vegetables ranging from tomatoes to cucumbers and green beans were planted. Seeing the garden in the warm sunshine, I felt so relaxed and delighted. My old friend showed me around and we spent all the afternoon chatting in her garden. I felt so lucky to be friends with her.
