A 23-year-old man can do weightlifting in many ways as hard as any other gym-goer, but he only has one leg. Nathan Seawood doesn’t let his disability keep him from the weight room. Instead, he’s learning to bear a different load.
“This isn’t just a physical battle in the gym,” Seawood said. “It’s a mental battle for myself.” Refusing to be weighed down by his disability, Seawood draws strength from his mind, as he fights to make it through each step. “That takes a lot out of me. I push my body so hard that I’m tired,” said Seawood, who once thought he might have to give up the weights forever.
Seawood ended up in a hospital bed with one leg after falling off a boat in Long Lake near Traverse City in June, 2019. His left leg got caught in the propeller and had to be cut.
“I didn’t want people to see me,” Seawood said. “I couldn’t accept what had happened to me because it’s a lifestyle change. And that was hard. I was down bad.”
Seawood said a therapist helped lift his spirits. “I wanted to be able to walk and that was difficult because I’m using muscles that never really get noticed as much,” Seawood said. Now he’s using those muscles to train hard at Grand Rapids City Gym, inspiring those around him to keep pushing.
“He faces difficulties most of us don’t have to,” Jeff Phillips, who owns the gym, said. “I mean, he’s in here and he only has one leg, but he’s doing a lot of the same lifts everybody with two legs are doing. It’s surely encouraging to see him doing that.”
Despite life’s best attempt to knock him down, Seawood is still standing, and while he may exercise differently from others, he’s thankful to still be moving. “I might have a disability, but I’m not disabled,” Seawood said.
24. What plays the key role in Seawood’s weightlifting?
A. His right leg. B. The others’ encouragement.
C. His strong will. D. His family.
25. What led to Nathan Seawood’s disability?
A. A serious disease. B. An early birth.
C. An accident. D. A medical mistake.
26. Which of the following words can best describe Nathan Seawood?
A. Confident and honest. B. Smart and hardworking.
C. Calm and modest. D. Determined and positive.
27. Why is Jeff Phillips mentioned in paragraph 6?
A. To tell Seawood’s sad story. B. To speak highly of Seawood.
C. To draw attention to weightlifting. D. To show sympathy for Seawood.
C
Are you pessimistic by nature? Well, it’s not good for your brain. A new study has found that repeated negative thinking in later life is linked to cognitive(认知) decline and greater deposits(沉积) of two harmful proteins responsible for Alzheimer’s disease(阿尔茨海默病).
Negative thinking behaviors, such as reflection about the past and worry about the future, were measured in more than 350 people over the age of 55 over a two-year period. About a third of the participants also had a brain scan to measure deposits of proteins, which cause Alzheimer’s disease. The scans showed that people who spent more time thinking negatively had more harmful proteins, worse memory and greater cognitive decline than people who were not pessimists.
The study also tested for levels of anxiety and depression and found greater cognitive decline in depressed and anxious people, which agrees with previous research. But proteins did not increase in people who were already depressed and anxious, leading researchers to suspect that repeated negative thinking might be the main reason why depression and anxiety lead to Alzheimer’s disease.
“This is the first study showing a biological relationship between repeated negative thinking and Alzheimer’s disease, and gives physicians a more precise way to assess risk and offer treatment,” said neurologist Dr. Richard Isaacson. “This study will change the way I care for my patients at risk.”
Fiona Carragher, who is chief policy and research officer at the Alzheimer’s Society in London, pointed out that this isn’t saying that a short-term period of negative thinking will cause Alzheimer’s disease. “Most of the people in the study were already identified as being at higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease,” she added. “so we need more research to see if these results exist within the general population.”
28. What does the study show?
A. Negative thinking removes harmful proteins in brain.
B. Optimistic people have better cognitive ability.
C. Alzheimer’s disease leads to worse memory.
D. Continuous pessimism may result in Alzheimer’s disease.
29. What did the researchers guess in paragraph 3?
A. Constant negative thinking may cause depressed people to get Alzheimer’s disease.
B. Long-term negative thinking is the reason for cognitive decline.
C. Alzheimer’s disease probably results in the increase in harmful proteins.
D. Anxiety and depression are the main causes of Alzheimer’s disease.
30. What is the attitude of Dr. Richard Isaacson towards the study?
A Neutral. B. Supportive. C. Negative. D. Uncaring.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The research needs to be further improved.
B. The study will provide a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
C. The following research will focus on short-term negative thinking.
D. The general population has a lower risk of having Alzheimer’s disease.
D

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
67.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Yoghurt(酸奶)
It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed(暴涨)as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn’t understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn’t have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent’s money and makes me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It’s just yoghurt. What’s the big deal?” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn't seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then — bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot frozen to his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.

Dear friends,
I am Li Hua. I feel greatly honored to be here to share with you my opinion about our efforts to build a civilized city.
First, the authorities have launched an activity entitled “Build A Civilized City”. As for me, I begin with small changes, such as obeying traffic rules, using polite languages, no littering, no spitting, etc. I’ll manage my own behaviour and help people around me to form good habits.
Come on, friends. Take action right now! Do remember we can make a big difference if everyone does their bits.
That’s all. Thanks for listening!
67. 读后续写(共25分)
Paragraph 1:
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. “Mum, why are you so generous to this stranger while so mean to me when I asked for a yoghurt?” I explained that if we were blind to the poor man’s situation he would be freezing. He didn’t have a home or food to eat after all. We could spare five dollars even if we were financially stressed. Finally, my son nodded and fixed his eyes on his yoghurt.
Paragraph 2:
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done. He took his yoghurt and handed it to the man outside his window. Even if it was just a matter of a few spoonful of yoghurt, it was all he had, and he gave it to someone who needed it more than he wanted it. He showed me that I was doing well as a mother. There are always blessings to count if we open our eyes, and always have the opportunity to be a blessing for someone else.
