Just as regulatin has helped increase fuel efficiency, cut exhaust smkes and intrduce anti-slip equipment, s gvernment invlvement is needed t get the cnnected car n the rad. It is beginning t happen. Earlier this year, Eurpe’s standards-setting agencies agreed a cmmn set f agreements fr cars and traffic infrastructure (基建) t cmmunicate. Others shuld fllw. Gvernments shuld then set firm deadlines fr all new cars t be fully cnnected and capable f matching, and a date fr existing cars t be re-imprved with a basic lcatr beacn (定位器) and the ability t receive risky warnings.
If cars are t cnnect, new infrastructure will have t be built. Rads and parking spaces will need sensrs t mnitr them; mtrways will need specific lanes fr matching. But this will nt necessarily be expensive. Upgrading traffic signals s they can be cntrlled remtely by a central traffic management system is a lt cheaper than building new rads.
The sner these changes are made, and cars are plugged int a smart traffic sectin, the quicker Singaprean variable pricing—fr parking as well as rad use—can becme the criterin. Mtrists will then have the mtive, as well as the ability, t avid the busiest places at the busiest times, and the hrrible death that rads take in human lives shuld start falling.
In the past, mre peple driving meant mre rads, mre jams, mre death and mre smkes. In the future, the cnnected car culd ffer mankind the pleasures f the rad with rather less f the pain.
What d gvernments truly expect f the cnnected car?

Mre special rads are needed by mtrists.
The whle prject is mre ecnmical t perate.
The whle sciety is crazier abut the new cars.
Which is mst UNLIKELY t benefit frm such changes?
A. Mtrists.B. Singapreans’ pricing.
C. Rad death.D. Traditinal traffic sectins.
Which best describes the authr’s attitude in the text?
A. Psitive.B. Critical.C. Objective.D. Dubtful.

They are challenging the traditinal expectatins f the retired as peple wh wear slippers and lk after the grandchildren. That will affect cnsumer, service and financial markets.
The rise f the yld will be a blessing t themselves, t ecnmies and t scieties. But fr all this t happen, three big things will have t change. The mst imprtant is public attitudes twards lder peple, and in particular the expectatin that 60-smethings ught t be putting their feet up and quietly retiring int the backgrund. Gvernment plicies will have t change, t. The retirement age in many rich cuntries is still belw the age t which many peple want t wrk. Public plicy makes retirement a cliff edge instead f a ramp(斜坡). Third, higher numbers f healthy yld peple will require great changes in health spending althugh the yld will still be cmparative healthy and active ver the next decade.
Why will the yld nt retire quietly int the backgrund?

The baby-bmers are changing ur sciety nwadays.

We went int the student unin last Thursday, the twenty-fifth f March and interviewed a ttal f 150 students. 70% f the students we talked t said that they liked ging ut with friends mre than anything else. I had expected them t say ding sprts r listening t music r smething like that.
Next n the list … and I wasn’t surprised at all by this … was watching TV. Mst students spent 15 hurs a week ding that. Ging t the cinema was pretty ppular t and s was watching sprts, but smething that surprised me was that sme students cnsidered shpping t be entertainment.
S what dn’t students like ding? Well, althugh quite a lt f them like acting and even belng t the drama club, surprisingly enugh ging t the theater was nt very ppular at all. In fact, it came bttm f the list! Why? It culd be because a lt f students really d have financial prblems. Mst students spent between £12 and £35 a week n entertainment and this represents abut a quarter f their ttal budget. The main prblem was that there was n transprt int the twn s it was hard getting t the theater. In fact a lt f students cmplained abut that, s it wuld be great if there was sme way a theater culd be built r even just a space set aside fr perfrmances here in the student unin.
