Good manners are always good manners. That's what I thought until I married Alexander, who is Russian.
When I first met Alexander and he said to me in Russian,“Nalei mnye chai- pour me some tea", I got angry and answered,“Pour it yourself." Translated into English, without a“Could you..?" or a "please", it sounded really rude to me. But in Russian it was fine- -you don't have to add any polite words.
However, when I took Alexander home to meet my parents in the UK, I had to give him a good lesson about pleases and thank yous (which he thought were completely unnecessary), and to teach him to say sorry if someone happened to step on his toes, and to smile, smile, smile.
Another thing that Alexander just couldn't understand was why people say things like“Would you mind passing me the salt, please?" He said,“It's only the salt, for God's sake! What do you say in English if you want a real favour?"
He also watched in amazement when, at a dinner party in England, we swallowed some really disgusting food and I said, “Mmmm... delicious." In Russia, people are much more direct. The first time Alexander 's mother came to our house for dinner in Moscow, she told me that my soup needed more flavouring. Afterwards, when we argued about it, my husband said,“Do you prefer your dinner guests to lie?"
Alexander complained that in England he felt like an idiot because in Russia if you smile all the time people think you are mad. In fact, this is exactly what my husband's friends thought of me the first time I went to Russia because I smiled at everyone, and always said“please" and“thank you" in Russian.
At home we now have an agreement. If we' re speaking Russian, he can say “Pour me some tea”, and just make a noise like a grunt (咕哝声) when I give it to him. But when we're speaking English, he has to add a“please", a“thank you", and a smile.
24. What can we know from what Alexander said?
A. He didn't think politeness was necessary. B. He didn't like the writer 's politeness.
C. He wasn't used to the English politeness. D. He wasn't willing to have good manners.
25. What did Alexander 's friends think of the author when they first met her?
A. She was noble. B. She was strange. C. She was lovely. D. She was impolite.
26. What can we tell from their agreement?
A. They respect each other. B. They change a lot for each other.
C. They learn from each other. D. They fail to fit in with each other.
27. What topic is the text mainly about?
A. Good manners. B. Human relations. C. Culture shock. D. Mixed marriages.
C
A four-wheeled pod shaped like a space capsule on riverside roads trundles slowly among people who run, walk, cycle and lead dogs. At a maximum speed of 10 mph, the car beeps as it moves regularly between the Inter Continental Hotel in the west of the peninsula and apartment blocks in the east.
The biggest surprise about the vehicle is not its futuristic appearance but how it is controlled. While current safety rules require a human to monitor the vehicle’s performance and step in to avoid crashes, the pod largely drives itself. It is one of several experiments worldwide aimed at exploring how autonomous vehicles might mesh with city transport systems. All are looking at how a technology being developed mainly for US highways can work in the more confined, chaotic space of city streets.
At the heart of these efforts is an attempt to work out whether driverless vehicles will ease or worsen the impact that private car travel has had on many cities following the highway-building craze of the mid-20th century.
Some fear the technology could prompt more journeys by private motor vehicles rather than more space-efficient public transport. If the technology provides comfortable, stress-free, private journeys, it might also prompt people to commute daily from further afield, generating yet more traffic.
Experts concerned about such impacts on behaviour argue it is vital that the roll-out of autonomous vehicle technology goes hand-in-hand with a rethink of how it is used.
David Begg, a former chairman of the UK’s Commission for Integrated Transport, accepts that autonomous vehicles will use road space more efficiently but says the problem remains that cars take up too much space for the people they carry. On average, most vehicles contain little more than one person—the driver.
“There’s no doubt autonomous vehicles can allow us to squeeze more vehicles into a given amount of capacity because they’re bumper-to-bumper and side-by-side,”prof Begg says. “Unless we can increase vehicle occupancy up from 1.1, we’re moving too much fresh air and not enough people.”
28. What do we know about driverless vehicles?
A. Driverless vehicle travels at an average speed of 10 mph.
B. Driverless vehicle drives itself to a great degree.
C. Driverless vehicles’ appearance is the same as common cars.
D. Most driverless vehicles contain more than one person.
29. What does the underlined word "confined" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Deserted B. tidy. C. straight. D. narrow.
30. What is the David Begg's attitude to the future of driverless vehicles?
A. Disapproving. B. concerned C. Positive. D. Sympathetic.
31. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Entertainment. B. Health. C. Education. D. Science.
D
An era in which an Alzheimer’s diagnosis can begin in a doctor’s office is now arriving. Advances in technologies to detect early signs of disease from a blood sample are helping doctors to identify the memory-robbing disorder more accurately and to screen participants more quickly for trials of potential treatments for the more than five million people in the U.S. afflicted with Alzheimer’s. Estimates predict that, by 2030, there will be 76 million people worldwide who will receive a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or other dementias(痴呆).
Last fall, a blood test developed by C2N Diagnostics in St. Louis, became available to most of the U.S. as a routine lab test—regulated under the CMS Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) program. It has also received a CE mark as a diagnostic medical device in the European Union—indicating it has met safety, health and environmental protection standards for the region.
“The development of a blood-based test for Alzheimer’s disease is just amazing,” says Michelle Mielke, a neuroscientist and epidemiologist at the Mayo Clinic. “The field has been thinking about this for a very long time. It’s really been in the last couple of years that the possibility has come to fruition.”
The C2N test, called PrecivityAD, uses an analytic technique known as mass spectrometry to detect specific types of beta-amyloid(ß-淀粉样蛋白), a protein fragment that is a pathological-hallmark of disease. Beta-amyloid proteins accumulate and form plaques visible on brain scans two decades before a patient notices memory problems. As plaques build up in the brain, levels of beta-amyloid decline in the surrounding fluid.
Such changes can be measured in spinal fluid samples—and now in blood, where beta-amyloid concentrations are significantly lower. PrecivityAD is the first blood test for Alzheimer’s to be cleared for widespread use and one of a new generation of such assays that could enable early detection of the leading neurodegenerative disease—perhaps decades before the onset of the first symptoms.
32. What can we know about Alzheimer’s diagnosis from the text?
A. It has been used widely by doctors. B. It may have a brilliant market.
C. It cannot be used in the future D. It is hard for doctors to accept.
33. According to the text, which description about the blood test developed by C2N is false?
A. It is difficult to be applied in the future. B. Its development to the disease is remarkable.
C. It has been approved by EU. D. It has achieved the goal of testing recently.
34. What does the underlined word “such changes” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Decrease in plaques of the brain B. Vanishment of a protein fragment.
C. Reduction in the levels of beta-amyloid. D. Plaques visible on brain scans.
35. What would be the best title for this text?
A. A creative test for detecting Alzheimer’s
B. Research on the test about detecting Alzheimer’s.
C. Development of the C2N test.
D. The development of a blood-based test.
第二节(共5小题, 每小题2分,满分10分)

What are the chances?
When we flip (掷) a coin, the odds (几率) are 1 in 2: it has an equal chance of landing on "heads (正面)”or“tails (反面).”But if you flip the coin 10 times, and the results may be 8 heads and only 2 tails. ___36_____
The answer is that the coin has an equal chance of landing on either heads or tails on every flip- -no matter what the last result was.___ 37___ But as we keep flipping a coin, the result totals will get closer and closer to half heads and half tails.
___38___ The odds of winning money are very small. In one simple lottery (彩票)game, players pick three numbers, from 0 to 9. They may use the same numbers more than once, so choices range from 000 to 999. What're the odds of winning? 1 in 1,000. That's the same as hitting a Coke placed in a tennis court by throwing a coin with your eyes closed.
In another lottery game, the player chooses five different numbers from 1 through 70,using each number only once. Then the player picks an additional number from 1 through 25.
Here is an example: 7, 15, 23, 44, 68 + 15. If the lottery system comes up with all six of the same numbers, the player wins.___39____ 1 in 302,575,350. You would have the same chance dropping a coin from a helicopter, with your eyes closed, and having it hit a Coke placed in a football field.
So, save your money. What can you count on, then?___40____.
A. What are the odds?
B. Why aren't there 5 heads and 5 tails?
C. Only adults are allowed to play most lotteries?
D. We can't predict how any one coin flip will land.
E. Your best bet is on your own talents, intelligence, and hard work.
F. Some mathematicians say that no one should ever play the lottery, except for fun.
G. That's why mathematicians hold that people should not spend money on the lottery.

How is everything going? I am very glad to learn that you are coming to China this summer. It's not necessary to worry your Chinese. I'd like to share my ideas, it might help.
First, be brave enough to speak Chinese when you communicate with others. It's of great important to be confident of you. We Chinese are very friendly so you needn't be afraid of making any mistakes. Second, it's better to speak slowly and clearly. Only by this way can you make yourself understand more easily. What's more, sometimes I can use drawings or pictures. Like you know, body language was also widely used across cultures and very often it really works.
May you will have a good time in China.
Best wishes!

参考范文
Recently, the northern part of China has seen the worst sandstorm in a decade. The flying sand and dust envelops the cities and villages, bringing much inconvenience to people’s life and doing great harm to their health with air quality dramatically declining.
There are several factors accounting for the outbreak of sandstorm. For one thing, the increased global temperature causes the already dry and rainless North to be even drier, which in turn makes the soil loose and easy to blow up. For another, over-grazing and deforestation lead to the great loss of trees. However, it is trees that play a key role in helping soil stay on the land.
Mother nature is turning on us because of irresponsible human activities. It’s high time that we protected the existing forest resources and planted more trees. Let’s join hands to create a green future for our motherland, our people and yourself.
Yours,
Li Hua
