Both India and Brazil are developing a world-class software industry . Their weapon is quality and one of their jobs is to attract the top quality specialists whose voices are not listened to in their country . Already , of the worlds 12 software houses that have earned the highest rating in the world , 7 are in India . Thats largely because they have used new methods rejected by America software specialists .
For example , for decades , quality specialists W. Edwards Deming and J. M. Juran had urged US software companies to change their attitudes to quality . But their quality call mainly fell on deaf ears in the USbut not in Japan . By the 1980s and 1990s, Japan was grabbing market share with better , cheaper products . They used Demings and Jurans idea to bring down the cost of good quality to as little as 5% of total production costs . In US factories , the cost of quality then was 10 times as high :50%.Watts S. Humphrey spent 27 years at IBM heading up software production and then quality assurance . But his advice was seldom paid attention to. He retired from IBM in 1990. In 1991, he worked out a system for assessing and improving software quality . It has proved its value . For example , in 2001, the cost of quality at Raytheon Electronics Systems was almost 60% of total software production costs . It fell to 15% in 2004 and has since further dropped to below 10%.Like Deming and Juran, Humphrey seems to be winning more praise overseas than at home . The Indian government and several companies have just founded the Watts Humphrey Software Quality Institute at the Software Technology Park in Chennai, India .Lets hope that US lead in software will not be eaten up by its quality problems .Which country has more highest-rating companies in the world than any other country ?  AGermany . BThe USA. CBrazil. DIndia. 5. How did Japan grab its market share by the 1980s and 1990s ? AIts products were cheaper in price and better in quality . BIts advertising was most successful . CThe US software industry was falling behind . DIt hired a lot of Indian software specialists .6. Which of the following statements about Humphrey is true?AHe is now still an IBM employerBHe has worked for IBM for 37 years   CIndia honors him highly        DThe US pays much attention to his quality advice7. What is the author concerned about ?  AMany software specialists are working for Japan . BThe quality problem will become a world problem . CThe US will no longer be the first software player in the world . DIndia and Japan are joining hands to compete with the US. CI can proudly say that last year I broke the record for the oldest person in the world to ride a roller-coaster. Im 105, but I feel younger. Even the doctor agrees Im in good condition. Im a bit deaf and my legs feel weak, but they are the only issue.I rode the Twistosaurus at Flamingo Land, which spins you round quite fast. I didnt choose to go on that. Id have preferred a really fast one that went upside down. But I was told I couldnt ride something like that, because my blood pressure could drop and I might have some danger.I wasnt nervous I dont get frightened of anything. I was securely fastened, so I knew I wouldnt fall out. The roller-coaster ride went on for three or four minutes, and it couldnt be a better experience. And I raised a lot of money for the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance fund, which was fantastic.People were saying Id got a place in the Guinness World Records. Later, someone came to present me with the certificate. I had it on the wall in my living room, with another one that got a year earlier. My record-breaking ways really began a couple of years ago, with the ice-bucket challenge. It turned out that I was probably the oldest person in the world to do it, and the video was very popular. After that, I started to think about what else I could do to raise money for different charities.Im not sure if anyone admires all the fun Im having. They just say Im daft and thats about it. But Ive had many good days and many exciting times. Ive had a really good life. I dont think Ive wasted any of it.8. How did the author most probably react while riding the roller-coaster?A. He really enjoyed himself.         B. He was very worried at first.C. He couldnt think much about it.    D. He got frightened as it started moving.9. What do you know about the author from Paragraph 4?A. He was the oldest person in the world.B. He set a record the year before last year.C. He disliked showing off his success. D. He was eager to get certificates.10.
