What makes one a great person? The legendary volleyball coach Lang Ping gave the answer in the recent documentary The Iron Hammer, titled after her nickname for her powerful strikes.
The documentary features Lang's inspiring journey from her gold medal victory as a volleyball player in the 1984 Olympics to her unparalleled (无可比拟的) career as a successful coach for both Team USA from 2005 to 2008 and China since 2013. She led the US to a silver medal finish and China to a gold medal triumph in the 2008 and 2016 Olympic Games, making her the first person to win Olympic volleyball gold as a player and coach.
Lang Ping revealed the secret to such remarkable achievements in the documentary. “I believe volleyball was my destiny,” she said.
But glory and challenges go hand in hand. Troubled by severe injuries to her cervical vertebra (颈椎) , back, waist and knees, caused by intense exercise and hard work, the 60-year-old has undergone more than 10 surgeries. “No parts of my body function well,” she joked.
But illness is certainly not the only difficulty Lang has faced throughout her career. In 2005, she struggled with balancing raising her daughter Lydia Bai Lang, who lived in the US, and her coaching career, according to China Sports Daily. She eventually decided to work for USA Volleyball that year and this decision aroused a lot of negative comments back in China.
“I'm proud of being Chinese.” Lang responded in an interview. Later, she returned to head the Chinese women's volleyball team in 2013, leading the team successfully defending its World Cup crown with a perfect record of 11 straight wins last year.
There is no doubt that Lang is one of the greatest players and coaches in history. As an athlete commented in the documentary, “Lang Ping is like Michael Jordan in our minds.”

    A. Ways to become a great person. B. Reasons for Lang Ping's success.

    25. Why did Lang Ping go to work for USA Volleyball in 2005?
    A. To make a big fortune. B. To take care of her family.

    A. Success comes at a price.
    B. Challenges are as important as glory.
    C. Athletes are likely to get their hands injured.

    C. To prove there are lots of great people in the world.

Long before iPhone, the cigarette was the companion of choice for restlessness. And long before Facebook and WeChat, it was tobacco that promised to better your social life. Now, quitting smartphones has become the new quitting smoking.
Of course, technology does not yellow your teeth, cause disease or lead to cancer. But some individuals are so concerned that device addiction is damaging their mental health. In order to reduce their dependence, even in Silicon Valley, people are turning off the messages that constantly buzz(发出嗡嗡声) for their attention, banning smartphones from the bedroom and, curiously, changing the colors on their screens to a less tempting scale of gray.
The big tech companies will have to work out how to respond to this new generation of quitters. Facebook is the first to go public with its attempt, hoping its recent move can make the social network more homely.
Last year the tech industry got a bad name --Big Tech--with unfortunate echoes of other industries that have faced fierce opposition, including Big Tobacco. Like them, the tech industry has to reduce concern from a new generation of activist shareholders (股东) that are questioning its role in the world. These campaigns are never as fierce as those faced by Big Tobacco. In the 1990s, socially responsible investors refused to put money in tobacco stocks.
It is far difficult for investors to challenge Big Tech and hard to separate the good these companies do in the world-connecting old friends and giving space for people to share their ideas-from the bad. In the meantime, stopping using technology remains problematic. In The World Without Mind: The Existential(存在的) Threat of Big Tech, Franklin Foer argues that tech should be seen in a similar way to junk food: a convenience that some reject for more continuing nutrition.
So we need to do more to turn the tide. In the same way that public service announcements made smoking around your children taboo(禁忌), we can warn parents against losing themselves in their smartphones while taking care of kids. We can also create no-smartphone zones at dinner. Eventually smartphones could be forbidden from all public places and help us give our attention to the people around us instead.
    28. How did people keep close relationships with others in the past?
    A. By smoking. B. By drinking. C. By phoning. D. By dining out.
    29. Why is the tech industry called Big Tech?
    A. It has an unfortunate name. B. It is as big as Big Tobacco.
    C. It plays a bad role in the world. D. It is a giant in Silicon Valley.
    30. What can we infer from Franklin Foer's argument about the tech?
    A. It promotes social development. B. It is still favored by some people.
    C. It is worse than Big Tobacco. D. It offers continuing nutrition.
    31. Which can be the best title for the passage?
    A. Creating a No Smartphone Life
    B. Smartphones Enrich Our Social Life
    C. Smoking Does Greater Harm Than Smartphones Do
    D. Quitting Smartphones Is the New Quitting Smoking
    D
Food experts say washing could spread the germs on your turkey in the kitchen sink or nearby food. But it’s been a challenge trying to convince cooks to stop rinsing(冲洗)off raw poultry(家禽肉). Germs that can make people sick are common in the guts(内脏) of healthy poultry and are legally allowed to be on raw turkey and chicken. The assumption is that nobody eats their poultry raw, and that thorough cooking will kill the bacteria.
The do-not-wash raw poultry advice from the USDA is relatively new and perhaps hasn’t caught on because it goes against the common belief that washing makes things clean, said Chapman. Benjamin Chapman, a study author and food safety expert at North Carolina State University, said the instinct to wash raw poultry goes back at least decades when people relied more on visual clues to spot problems with poultry. Meanwhile, washing hands and surfaces are also important.
But food preparation is a complicated act, and germs from poultry can be spread even if it’s not washed, especially when birds are removed from packaging.
The USDA-funded study stresses that point. Researchers sprayed raw chicken with a harmless strain of E. coli(大肠杆菌)and watched volunteer cooks at test kitchens. Among those who washed their raw chicken, about a quarter ended up spreading the bacteria to their lettuce. But even some of those who did not rinse the chicken got germs on the lettuce. And there are other opportunities for germs to survive on turkeys: melting and cooking.
To ensure a bird is thoroughly cooked, they say to use a thermometer to check that the deepest and thickest parts of it have reached 165 degrees. Even after the meal is cooked, you aren’t out of the danger zone. To keep turkeys and other leftovers safe, experts say they should be refrigerated after two hours.
    32. People don’t accept USDA’ s advice because__________
    A. the advice is relatively new.
    B. cooks clean the turkey before cooking it.
    C. heat can kill most germs and no one eats raw food.
    D. cleaning seems more trustworthy.
    33. What can be concluded from Paragraph 4?
    A. Germs from a turkey can be spread whether it is washed or not.
    B. Food packages carry germs.
    C. Hands and surfaces are easy to get E. coli.
    D. Multiple methods should be applied to food to get rid of germs.
    34. Which way may help to cook a turkey safely?
    A. Rinse off the turkey before it is heated.
    B. Keep the turkey away from the lettuce and refrigerator.
    C. Use a thermometer to check the temperature of the turkey.
    D. Wash hands and packages before taking out the turkey.
    35. From which section of a magazine is the text probably taken?
    A. Cooking. B. Technology. C. Medicine. D. Science.

Don’t miss the good chance. Your participation will certainly make a difference to the event.

    Text 1
W: Can I put my books in your classroom for now? I don't have time to go back up a floor and still make it to the bus on time.
M: Sure. That way, we can go down together and sit beside each other on the bus (1)
    Text 2
M: How is the medicine I gave you working out? Sometimes it doesn't work, or makes people tired.
W: It works fine. My only complaint is that I don't feel like eating anything.(2)
    Text 3
W: John, please save the rest of the cookies for your sister. I made ten cookies. There are only three left.
M: I didn't eat them all! Dad had four!
    Text 4
M: Lucky you! You got the window seat!
W: Why don't we change places? I prefer to get up and walk around during the flight. Here, come rest by the window. (4)It's going to be a big conference. You’ve been looking tired since the meeting yesterday.
    Text 5
W: Hi. Are all novels in the fiction section, even new arrivals? I’m looking for something by a new novelist.
M: I'm not sure. I just came here to study. (5)
W: Sorry to bother you. I thought you were a librarian.
    Text 6
M: Thanks for meeting me here.
W: Yeah, it's just like old times. But the place looks really different. (6)
M: They gave it a new look. What do you think?
W: The black and white floor is really nice.(6) But I miss the piano by the front entrance.
M: The piano is still here. They got it repaired and moved it into the dining room. There's jazz every Saturday now.
W: Oh, cool! We'll have to come back. I have to say I love the old design, with the red walls. But live music is a great addition.
M: Let's see if the food is just as good now as it was then. What are you going to order? (7)
    Text7 (第8题为总结题)
W: Bill, please. You're annoying the people behind us!
M: I can't help it! These actors are so funny! I haven't laughed this hard for a long time.
W: During the second half, you’ll need to be lot quieter.
M: OK. OK. Hey, what's wrong? Were you crying?
W: I didn't find that scene funny. It reminded me of a fight I had with my friend Sarah on a trip to France. I haven't spoken to Sarah since then. It was a lot like what we just saw, when the characters were at that dinner party.
M: The disagreement we saw on stage was full of humor and affection. I can see you care about Sarah. You should give her a call. You're as stubborn as Dad!
    W: I really miss Sarah.
M: After the play, why don’t you call her?
    Text 8
W: Thanks for coming to the studio today, Mr. Larson. Why don't you tell me about your last position?
M: Well, I started working at Smith Electronics in Chicago right after I graduated from college. I was in the sales department, and even though I was good at it, I wasn't really happy. (10) After one year, I was moved to the HR department.
W: Was that a better fit?
M: Yes. I prefer talking to people face-to-face, and I enjoy solving problems. I did quite well in that position. (11)
W: So, why did you leave?
M: I had been working at Smith for four years straight. Then I wanted to take some time off, so I went to Paris. My three-week vacation turned into a two-year stay!
W: Wow! What made you come back to the United States? And why is it a good time for you to join Branson Labs?
M: When my father started Branson Labs here in Los Angeles forty years ago, he wanted to pass it down to me. At my graduation dinner, I promised him that I would take over when the time was right. I'm finally ready to make good on that promise.(12)
    Text 9
W: I have a special deal that says three drinks for the price of one. I printed it from your website, see? So, those three Cokes should only cost me $2, not $6.(13)
M: Oh, I didn't know about the deal. My mistake. I'll adjust that right now.
W: I also have special deals for the soup, bread, and sandwich meat. They should all be cheaper.
M: For some reason, our system doesn't show the deals when the item is scanned. I’ll have to type in the special deals by hand. One moment.
W: Thanks. I need to save all the money I can.(14)I just got laid off.
M: I'm sorry to hear that, Miss.
W: I went to Harvard and studied business. I never thought I'd be out of work when I graduated.
M: I also work as an accountant for a technology company. (15) We are looking to hire some new accountants in various positions.
W: Really? Wow, I guess it's a good thing I complained to you about getting fired.
M: Why don't you come by the company office?(16)It's at 3300 Main Street. How does 1: 00 p. m tomorrow sound?
W: Sounds great. I'll see you then, and thank you for the opportunity!
    Text 10
Ladies and gentlemen, I'm pleased to announce the winner of the 2018 song-writing competition.(17) As you probably know, every year, young songwriters from our town enter our annual spring competition held here in the beautiful Brook Theater. (19)When local musician Fred McGill started the event four years ago,(17) we had no idea how much it would grow. In 2017, over 100 people sent in their songs. This year the number of people who participated doubled.(18)It's wonderful to see the talent and energy of the next generation. Our judges were amazed by the musical skills they saw and heard. Congratulations to all the teenagers who sent in their songs. It was a difficult choice, but our committee has made a selection. Let's clap our hands for Maryanne James! Maryanne, where are you? Please join me on stage!(19) There she is! Maryanne, we loved the way you sang about everything from the colors of your garden to the eyes of children. Please accept this prize. We hope it encourages you to continue writing songs when you start music school in the fall. Finally, we'd like to ask you to perform a song for our audience.(20)
