The great avenues are quiet, and the shops are closed. There’s the smell of fresh bread from a bakery somewhere. It would be hard to say which time of the day in Paris I prefer but this is probably it. Soon the streets will be full of people and traffic. As with most other cities, you see the real Paris when the city wakes up.
There is, however, another part of Paris which is silent and free from people 24 hours a day. Under the city are hundreds of kilometers of abandoned tunnels. During the 19th century, Paris needed more stones for buildings above the ground, so people dug tunnels beneath the city. After that, many farmers grew mushrooms in them. During World War II, the French soldiers also used them. Since the 1970s, many young people have started spending days and nights below the city in these tunnels. It’s now a place for parties, theatre performances, art galleries – anything goes!A “normal” tourist can visit some parts of Paris’s tunnel system, such as the underground cemetery, where you can see the bones of about six million Parisians. The bodies came from cemeteries above the ground two centuries ago when the city needed more space.
However, people are not allowed to enter other parts of the tunnel system. It’s very dangerous because some tunnels might collapse and people will be trapped below. Nevertheless, there are people who will take you to visit them. I have found two “unofficial” tour guides who take me through many tunnels. After a couple of hours we arrive at a room which isn’t on any map. The room is comfortable and clean with a table and chairs and a bed. The guide tells me there are many other places like this. “Many people come down here to party, some people to paint.... We do what we want here.”

New research found that people facing stay-at-home orders tried cooking new things and threw away less food. The results came from a recent research project involving 11,000 shoppers in 11 countries. It showed that people were buying less microwaveable food and more fresh fruits and vegetables.
The study involved shoppers in several European countries, as well as Australia, Chile, Uganda, Canada and Brazil. In nearly half of the countries, shoppers reported buying fewer salty or sweet snacks, although overall sales remained about the same.
Charlotte De Backer, a lead organizer of the study, who was a researcher at the University of Antwerp in Belgium, said many people turn to salty, sweet and fatty products when they are feeling stress. But during the current crisis-Coronavirus (冠状病毒), many people seemed to fill this desire with home-baked goods. In Chile, for example, there was a large drop in sales of snacks, but a big rise in people buying baking necessities like flour.
De Backer said the healthier food buying could be related to the fact that people took more time to carefully plan their trips to the store. “If you make a shopping list, you plan your meals ahead and you are less likely to add unhealthy food.”
Many shoppers taking part in the study also said they had tried cooking new things and used more left-over foods to reduce waste. However, De Backer said this behavior could be linked to fears of food shortages and could change after the Coronavirus .
But she noted that some of the improvements in eating are likely to continue. She says this is because in many countries, stay-at-home orders have been in place for more than six weeks – the usual amount of time it takes people to form new behaviors.
De Backer also said that as people grow more confident and creative in the kitchen, they could break down one of the main barriers to home cooking.

There is a common belief that clutter (杂物) adds unnecessary stress to our lives and is holding us back from our dreams and goals. But is it true? Sabine Kastner of Princeton University, an expert on the subject who has been studying how the brain processes clutter for 20 years, may answer this question. “Not all clutter is bad. And our brains can deal with it.” She says, “The media often writes about clutter in a very simple, black-and-white way: Clutter affects the mind and we need to clear it out. But it is much more complex than that. For starters, our brains are designed to deal with clutter.”
“The attention system in our brains actually likes clutter because that is what it is used to. And it is using this cluttered environment to make meaningful selections from it.” In terms of how best our brains perform around it, Kastner says there is not a one-size-fits-all solution. The idea that an uncluttered workplace is better is not “universally true.”
Some people need to see their work. If something is carefully put away, to them it does not exist anymore. Out of sight, out of mind. For other people, objects can stimulate (刺激) their creativity and give them ideas.
Even there are other people who actually like that clutter. And they clutter their environment because it actually helps them. It almost like stimulating their brain to do something.”
However, other people are unable to work in a cluttered environment. Kastner notes that some people may get distracted by having lots of things around them. These people may need more organization and less clutter to work well.
Some people do not care either way. Whether the area is cluttered or clear they work the same. And for others it may depend on the project. For administrative work, they might need a clear workspace. But for more creative projects, they may need many things around them.
