An air-conditioner has become a sign of middle-class status in developing nations. But as air-conditioners appear from windows and storefronts across the world, scientists are becoming increasingly alarmed about the impact of the gases on which they run.

The oldest CFC coolants used in air-conditioners, which are highly damaging to the ozone layer 臭氧),have been largely rejected from use; and the newest ones, used widely in industrialized nations, have little or no effect on the ozone layer. But these newest gases have an another impact they contribute to global warming thousands of times more than CO2 does, the standard greenhouse gas. Indeed, the leading scientists in the field have just calculated that if all the equipment entering the world market uses the newest gases currently employed in air-conditioners, up to 27 percent of all global warning will result from those  gases by 2050.

So the treatment to cure one global environmental disaster is now seeding another.  There is precious little time to do something, to act," said Stephen O. Andersen, the co-chairman of an international organization's technical and economic advisory panel.

Promising technologies wait, blocked in the wings. In China and a few other countries, room air-conditioners using hydrocarbonswhich cause little warming or ozone damage—are already coming off assembly lines 水线装配线in small numbers but have not yet been approved for sale, in part because the chemicals are flammable 易燃的.Yet in Europe, refrigerators that cool with hydrocarbons have been in use for years, and some companies in the United States, such as Pepsi and Ben and Jerry's, have recently changed in-store coolers from HFCs to hydrocarbons as part of sustainability 持续性plans. But the patent is being argued. And some governments have still not finished safety testing.

Mr. Wypior, whose agency is trying to promote climate-friendly air-conditioning industries in India and China, said: 'The technologies are available. They're well known. They're proven though not at scale. So why aren't we moving?"

    27. What's Paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A. The harmful effect of the newest gases used in air-conditioners.

    B. The seriousness of global warning faced by the whole world.

    C. Scientist's efforts to control the greenhouse gases.

    D. Air-conditioners' influence on the ozone layer.

    28. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A. These newest gases are used in the wrong direction.

    B. These newest gases carry both benefits and harms.

    C. These newest gases will lead to global warming.

    D. These newest gases should be banned from producing.

    29. Why are hydrocarbons not widely used in air-conditioners?

    A. People are arguing about their security.

    B. Most countries haven't mastered the related technologies.

    C. Hydrocarbons are mainly used in refrigerators.

    D. Hydrocarbons are not friendly to the environment.

    30. What's Mr. Wypior's attitude to climate-friendly air-conditioner?

    A. Negative. B. Unconcerned.

    C. Positive. D. Indifferent.

    第三部分英语知识运用(共两节,满分45)

    第二节(10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15)

    阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

Old people who smoke may think 56 unnecessary to give up the habit as the damage from years of smoking can't be made up for. But it turns out there's a benefit of 57 (quit) even later in life. Recent research 58 (publish) in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that older adults who quit smoking in their 60s  59 (have) a lower chance of dying in the following years than the ones of the same age who kept smoking.

The results were based on a survey 60 more than 160,000 participants older than 70 completed questionnaires about their smoking history in 2004 or 2005, and were tracked until the end of 2011 to see who had died. Those who quit in their 60s had 61  23 percent lower risk of death during the study than the current smokers.

The research also stresses that the most effective way 62 (keep) from smoking is to advise people not to get 63 the habit in the first place. Most smokers start and get both physically and 64 (mental) addicted during their adolescence. And among current smokers, the 65 (early) the study participants started, the higher their likelihood of dying during the follow-up period.

Nowadays, more and more employers and employees work online either time or part-time, and that number is continuously growing. It's believed that flying around the world for face-to-face company meetings is a waste of time and money. An effective choice to get rid of it is to use Web meetings.

A large group of presentations, training classes and meetings are done online without losing the face-to-face experience. Web meetings are online meetings where an organizer invites attendees to listen to or watch an online presentation by presenters. Besides, Web meetings can be recorded for later use. Presenters can take real-time surveys to study how to hold a successful meeting. Some Web meeting software programs can monitor the users' desktop behavior to see if they become distracted from the presentation and begin working on other documents. If so, the program can tell presenters when the listeners lose their attention, and how long the distraction lasts. In this way, the presenters will know which parts of their meetings need improving.

Web meetings can work well because they're hosted on a server 服务器.Images from the presenter's desktop are taken, uploaded to a server and then downloaded by people who have access to the server. Web meetings require a powerful server to deal with several images a second and "serve" them back to thousands of users at the same time. And companies have two choices when it comes to these servers. They can either buy a special Web meeting server to host their meetings on-site, or they can pay for a Web meeting service every time and let the offsite provider worry about hosting the meetings. The choice depends on how frequently the company holds Web meetings, the average number of people attending the meetings, and the quality of engineering and information technology.

Web meetings are an excellent example of how technology is changing the way we do business. With all the technologies today, the traditional office might soon be a thing of the past.
