第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

It’s November now and Christmas is on the way. What would be a better way to spend time with your loved ones than sitting down to watch some classic Christmas movies?
1. The Grinch (2000)
This is a Christmas must-watch. It was originally(最初) a children’s book written by Dr. Seuss, which I would suggest reading! It’s the story of a green monster(怪兽) who wants to destroy Christmas but who in the end discovers the power of love. I promise it’s a great film with plenty of laughs along the way.
2. Love Actually (2003)
While this is not a personal favourite of mine, people in the UK love this film. It features (由……主演) famous actors and actresses such as Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman. It might be a little difficult to follow, but the heart-warming story makes it worth watching.
3. Home Alone (1990)
This is one of my favourite films of all time and I would watch it all year round if I could. It tells the story of a boy, Kevin, who is left alone in his house when his large family forget to take him on vacation. While the family are away, burglars(窃贼) try to break into the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps. The trips, falls and traps will have you laughing out loud as you watch a 10-year-old boy outsmart two grown men.
4. Miracle on 34th Street (1994)
You can’t have Christmas in an English-speaking country without watching this film. It’s not funny like Home Alone or The Grinch, but it is really touching. It’s about a man who says he is Santa Claus, but nobody believes him except a lawyer and a little girl. The storyline may seem a little childish but you can enjoy it at any age.
21. Which movie is based on a children’s book?
A. The Grinch. B. Love Actually.
C. Home Alone. D. Miracle on 34th Street.
22. What does the author think of Miracle on 34th Street?
A. It is his favourite movie. B. It is funny and touching.
C. It is a little difficult to follow. D. It is suitable for people of all ages.
23. What do the four movies have in common?
A. All can make you laugh out loud. B. All are newly-made movies.
C. All are related to Christmas. D. All tell stories about kids.
B
We often hear people talking about a generation gap(代沟). The name is new, but the idea is old. Young people and their parents don’t understand each other. The world has always kept changing. During the second century after Christ a wise man said, “Bury me on my face because in a little while everything will be turned upside down.” There has always been a gap between generations, but more people talk about it now. Old Mr. Ellis thinks he understands what has happened.
“When I was a boy, I thought the world was a beautiful place. My life was very pleasant. But when I was older, I learned about people who were treated badly, people who didn’t have enough to eat. I wanted to help them, and I married a girl who wanted to help them, too. We went to meetings and talked a lot, but it didn’t seem to make much difference.”
“Our children grew up in a world at war. They didn’t know when the fighting would stop. They wanted their children to have nice clothes and toys. They didn’t want to think about the future. They thought nothing could be done about it.” “Now I have grandchildren, and they have their own ideas. They are trying to make the world better. They are trying to help other people. They’re making people listen to them. I am proud of their generation.”
25. Which generation did NOT want to do anything to make the world a better one?
A. His children’s generation. B. Mr. Ellis’ generation.
C. His grandchildren’s generation. D. None of the above.
26. Which generation is/was more efficient(有效率的,有能力的) in making the world better one?
A. Mr. Ellis’ generation. B. His children’s generation.
C. His grandchildren’s generation. D. None of the above.
27. What is the writer’s attitude towards the generation gap?
A. Common. B. Awful. C. Funny. D. Unacceptable.
C
Adrian’s “Amazing Race” started early when his parents realized that he, as a baby, couldn’t hear a thing, not even loud noises. In a special school for the hearing-impaired(听觉受损的), he learned sign language and got to mix with other disabled children. However, the sight of all the disabled children communicating with one another upset his mother. She wanted him to lead a normal life. So after speaking to an advisor, she sent him to private classes where he learned to read lips and pronounce words.
Later on, Adrian’s parents decided to send him to a regular school. But the headmaster tried to prevent them from doing so, saying regular school couldn’t take care of a special needs student. His parents were determined to take the risk and push him hard to go through his work every day because they wanted to prove that, given the opportunity, he could do anything. Adrian made the grade and got accepted. It was a big challenge. The pace(节奏) was faster so he had to sit at the front of the class and really pay attention to the teacher, which wasn’t always easy. But he stuck to it and did a lot of extra work after school.
The efforts made by Adrian and his parents paid off. Adrian graduated with good grades and got into a top high school. He also achieved a lot in life outside school. He developed a love for the outdoors and went to Nepal to climb mountains. He even entered the World Yacht Race 05/06 — being the first hearing-impaired Asian to do so.
But none of these achievements would have been possible without one of the most important lessons from his mother. “If you believe in yourself and work hard, you can achieve great results.” She often said.
28. Adrian's parents decided to send him to a regular school because .
A. they wanted him to live a normal life
B. they wanted to prove the headmaster wrong
C. he wouldn't mix with other disabled children
D. he wasn’t taken good care of in the special school
29. How did Adrian finally succeed in his study?
A. He did a lot of outdoor activities.
B. He was pushed hard to study every day.
C. He attended private classes after school.
D. He worked very hard both in and after class
30. Why is Adrian's life described as an “Amazing Race”?
A. He did very well in his study.
B. He succeeded in entering a regular school.
C. He reached his goals in spite of his disability.
D. He took part in the World Yacht Race 05/06.
D
Consider these five words: island, honour, sign, tongue, climb. At first glance, you probably don’t think they have anything in common. Then, you might find some of them contain the most common letter in the English language. And you might need to go back to your grade-school grammar lessons to see the connection. If you're still confused, say each word slowly. Did you notice a missing syllable(音节) or two? Actually, all five words have one or more silent letters—and that’s just a small sample of them.
It’s no secret that the English language has lots of crazy grammar rules, and the way we pronounce words is no exception. While there are 26 letters in the alphabet, they share at least 44 different pronunciations among them. The letter A, for example, has seven different English pronunciations alone. At least you can safely ignore(忽视) these common grammar rules.
On top of that, almost every letter in the alphabet has a silent usage, too. Think about it: From the C in scissors to the U in build, the English language has a bad habit of dropping letters in certain words. Even unusual letters like Z and J are silent in words that we have adopted from foreign languages, such as marijuana (originally a Spanish word) and laissez-faire (French).
But as Merriam-Webster Dictionary points out, one unusual letter is never silent: the letter V. While it makes an appearance in words like quiver and vivid, you can be sure it always behaves the exact same way. That might change soon, though. Last year, President Donald Trump tweeted(发推特) the word “covfefe”, which caused heated debate(争论) about how, exactly, one should say this made-up term. Some suggested that it is pronounced with a silent V.
32. What do the underlined words in Paragraph have in common?
A. They contain the exactly same letters. B. They have one or more silent letters.
C. They are difficult to pronounce. D. They all refer to a place.
33. Why is the letter A mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To show that it has many pronunciations.
B. To tell that English has many grammar rules.
C. To explain that words have similar pronunciations.
D. To prove English letters have various pronunciations.
34. Which letter is seldom silent in the English language?
A. The letter A. B. The letter J. C. The letter V. D. The letter Z.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. English pronunciations. B. English dictionaries.
C. English grammar. D. English vocabulary.

Dear John,
I've looked at several possible places where I can go on holiday together with my mom. We prefer to go to the South Island in New Zealand because both of us have never been there before. We can explore the forests and walk along the beach, enjoying the natural beauty. We also plan to taste the traditional food.
We plan to take the trip during the first week of October. The 7-day trip costs about 7,000 yuan per person. But my mom only wants to spend 3,000 yuan for each. Anyhow, I think this trip sounds really exciting and my mom likes it very much! Should we book it? Any advice? Please let me know.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
