第一节 (共12小题,每小题2.5分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中选出最佳选项
A
I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.
I got a rescue call from a woman in Mutton town. She had found a young owl(猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2 to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.
I examined the chick(雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.
The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.
Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all — LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.

A. A new nest.
B. Some food.
C. A recording.
D. Its parents.
24. How would the author feel about the outcome of the event?
A. It’s unexpected.
B. It’s beautiful.
C. It’s humorous.
D. It’s discouraging.

Amber has a degree in business management and economics. She put her skills to good use when she spent eleven months in Cambodia (柬埔寨) through World Hope International as a volunteer working with a local micro-finance (小额信贷) company to help the poor get financial services.
Amber's first few weeks in Cambodia was busy and difficult as she tried to learn the language, understand the culture and get used to her new surroundings. Her volunteer service involved working with a local micro-finance company. In addition to writing plans, preparing international marketing materials and building donor (捐赠人) relations,Amber met with company clients. During these visits she learned how the small loans they received transformed their lives. She learned first-hand the benefits of micro-finance,which by providing farmers and small-business owners with affordable working capital (such as money to buy a sewing machine) helped them to earn their way out of poverty (贫穷).
“It never stopped amazing me when a client would show me a new home that was built because of a loan he received or the way a client's business had improved and thus allowed his children to be sent to school.” Amber said.
Amber recalled that one client called Paul walked with her all around his house, pointing to what he had done with each of eight loans he'd received. He explained how every loan had improved his family's quality of life. Amber said he was one of the hardest-working men she had ever met. He had suffered greatly in the Cambodian Civil War and became disabled, but not once did he let it kill his dreams of realizing a better life for his family. His latest purchase,a sound system that he rented out for weddings and other parties doubled his income!
Amber said,“Living and working in Cambodia helped me see the world in new ways and made me aware of the hardship and suffering that many people around the world face every day. Those eleven months were some of the most meaningful months of my life.”

We humans love to stare into our smart devices. We gaze for hours—about 10 hours and 39 minutes a day—at our computers, smart-phones, tablets and televisions. Is all this staring bad for us? It might be, mainly because as we stare at our devices we are exposing ourselves to blue light.
Blue light is a type of electromagnetic radiation with a very short wavelength that produces a high amount of energy. While it’s true that light can damage our eyes under certain circumstances, there’s no scientific evidence suggesting that blue light is harmful to our eyes. But many people still think it is, which is why blue-light-blocking glasses are so popular. So, do the glasses work?
“Everyone is very concerned that blue light may be causing damage to the eye, but there’s no evidence that it may be causing serious damage,” Dr. Rahul Khurana, a clinical spokesman, told Business Insider.
Blue light exposure is nothing new. In fact, the sun is the largest source of blue light. Moreover, blue light is also present in LED light. But if blue light isn’t harmful, then why are we constantly rubbing our eyes when we’re looking at our screens? The answer is eyestrain(眼疲劳). More than 60 percent of people experience eye problems associated with digital eyestrain. And blue light, it seems isn’t the cause. Instead, our eyes are so strained because most of us blink less when we stare at our digital devices. So, if eyestrain is the real issue, blue-light-blocking glasses are probably of little use.
29. What do we know about blue light?
A. It has the shortest wavelength.
B. It’s a kind of nuclear radiation.
C. It consumes a great deal of energy.
D. It may come from electronic devices.
30. What causes the popularity of blue-light-blocking glasses?
A. Evidence of their benefits to eyes.
B. Widespread use of smart devices.
C. Belief in blue light’s harmful effect.
D. Scientific understanding of blue light.
31. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A. Rubbing eyes makes people strained.
B. Blue light exposure is hardly avoidable.
C. Blue light may connect with tired eyes.
D. Eye problems are not easy to deal with.
32. According to the text, wearing blue-light-blocking glasses may be _______.
A. Useless B. harmful C. tiring D. beneficial

第二节 满分25分 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My family and I go to the Big Island of Hawaii in the United States every year. Each year, we do the same things----spend time at the beaches, surfing and fishing. On this trip, however, my family got tired of this holiday style and wanted to do something different. We learned from a local that there was a hot spring on the island called the Boiling Pots. Without doing any research, we decided to set off on an adventure to that spot.
We drove to the destination, but were surprised to find that the area was closed off by a fence (栅栏). Reading the sign placed in front of the gate, we found out it was, in fact, a forbidden area that lay at the bottom of the mountain. And we were on the mountaintop. Seemingly out of nowhere, a strange man came up to us. He told us he would go to the Boiling Pots and that he would show us the way down there if we would just jump over the fence and follow him. After some discussion, my family, 8 members, followed the man past the fence.
The ''path'' was a slope (斜坡) covered in mud and high grass. Several times, our members fell but nobody gave up and turned back because it seemed an amazing adventure.
After about one hour's walk, we arrived at the bottom finally, but a large river stopped us. The strange man went to borrow a boat from his friend living nearby. We stood on the bank, waiting for him and joking that we could swim across the river.
Just then, I heard the voice of my father screaming at us to move. I looked up to the sky and saw a large tree falling towards us. I ran forward, pushing the people in front of me. I fell to the ground, hearing a loud sound of the tree hitting the ground, along with pieces of branches surrounding us.

Dear Jim,
I’m happy to receive your letter and know you’re coming to China. Of the two trips to the Yangtze River and Mount Tai, both are highly recommended. Personally, I prefer the tour along the Yangtze, the longest river and one of the mother rivers of Chinese civilization. You can learn a lot about the history of China and Chinese people. Moreover, the scenery along the river is amazing, with many well-known sightseeing spots. That’s why I think the trip along the Yangtze will be a better choice.
Hope you’ll have a good time in China.
Yours
Li Hua
续写 满分25分
Paragraph 1:
In a second all went quiet. I slowly got up, looking around to see if anyone was hurt. However, one person did it faster than me. It was my father. He rushed to us, asking us, ''Is everyone OK?'' His voice was full of anxiety and love. Luckily, all were safe, except my little sister who had injured her left knee. We all surrounded her to check whether she could walk normally. She tried to stand up but failed because of the ache.
Paragraph 2:
When we had no idea what to do, the strange man came back. He said that the moment he heard the loud sound, he returned immediately. Seeing what we had experienced, he said sorry to us again and again, and told us the dangerous situation could be the reason why the area was a forbidden one. We had to give up our plan to the hot spring. With the strange man's help, we made a little ''bed'' with the branches, and carried my little sister back finally. What an adventure!
