At just 11 years old, Vince Weishaus runs his own hair salon(发廊) in his parents' basement in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, doing different hairstyles for free.
For Vince, his love of hair started at a very young age. "He has an older sister who had dolls and he would just, at 2 or 3, be playing with the dolls' hair,” recalled Emily Weishaus, Vince's mother.
Not long afterward, he also fell in love with braiding(编辫子). "He watched me do a braid, and then he undid the braid and redid it without me ever showing him how to do it,” his mother said. He found his true passion as

He even colors his friends' hair tips before they head off to camp.
Vince loves learning different practices and tricks of the trade from other hair mentors, such as his own stylist, Chelsea, who teaches him many styling skills.
The sky is the limit for Vince—his eventual goal is to become a world-famous hair colorist one day. His advice to anyone who wants to pursue their own dreams: “Do what they love and be themselves.”

When I was five or six years old, I remember watching TV and seeing other children suffer in other parts of the world. I would say to myself, “ When I grow up, when I can get rich, I will save kids all over the world.”
At 17, I started my career here in America, and by the age of 18, I started my first charity organization. I went on to team up with other organizations in the following years, and met, helped, and even lost some of the most beautiful souls, from six-year-old Jasmina Anema who passed away in 2010 from leukemia (白血病)—her story inspired thousands to volunteer as donors, to 2012 when my grandmother lost her battle with cancer, which is the very reason and the driving force behind the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF). We're all human. And we all just want a chance: a chance at life, a chance in education, a chance at a future, really. And at CLF, our mission is to impact as many lives as possible, but it starts with just one.
People make it seem too hard to do charity work. The truth is, you don't have to be rich to help others. You don't need to be famous. You don't even have to be college-educated. But it starts with your neighbor, the person right next to you, the person sitting next to you in class, the kid down the block in your neighborhood. You just do whatever you can to help in any way that you can. And today, I want to challenge each of you to make a commitment to help one person, one organization, one situation that touches your heart. My grandmother always used to say,“If you've got a dollar, there's plenty to share. ”
29. What did the author want to do at a young age?
A. Watch TV. B. Grow up quickly.
C. Become wealthy. D. Help other children.
30. What directly caused the author to create and develop the CLF?
A. A six-year-old kid's request.
B. Her grandmother's death of cancer.
C. Many volunteers' inspiration.
D. Other organizations' encouragement.
31. What does the underlined word“one”in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A chance. B. A task. C. A life. D. An organization.
32. What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph?
A. Do little things to help those around them.
B. Work hard to get a college education.
C. Challenge their friends to offer help.
D. Do charity work when you are rich.
D
Thomas James Hanson will remember for a long time the snowstorm that hit the state of New York on November 22. The 47-year-old man from Niagara Falls was stuck in his car on the highway for almost eight days after his vehicle was accidentally pushed to the side of the road and covered with snow by workers employed to remove the snow from the streets.
Driving on the Interstate Highway 190 during the worst of the snowstorm, Mr. Hanson decided to pull over his old 1993 Volkswagen Passat to the side of the road and wait for the weather conditions to improve. He remained motionless(静止的) for approximately five hours before a snow plow arrived to clear the way. Unfortunately for the poor man, the driver of the gigantic snow removal vehicle did not see the small car, pushing it into the ditch(沟) and covering it with more than 2 meters of snow.
Fortunately for the father of two children, the snow that was stacked over his vehicle was not very dense and allowed for enough fresh air to get through to enable him to survive. He was able to drink water that he obtained by melting snow with his lighter in an aluminum coffee cup, and he ate the few items of groceries he had bought before going home.
"If I had known I would be stuck for eight days, I would have bought more than a jar of dill pickles (咸菜), a bottle of ketchup and two sticks of beef jerky (牛肉干),” said the survivor with a smile.

This year some twenty-three hundred teenagers (young people aged from 13-19) from all over the world will spend about ten months in US homes. They will attend US schools, meet US teenagers, and form impressions of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world.
Here is a two-way student exchange(交流/交换) in action. Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George's family. In turn, George's son Mike spent a year in Fred's home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months’ study, the language began to come to him. The school was completely different from what he had expected—much harder. Students rose respectfully (尊敬地) when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that are usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.
Family life, too, was different. The father's words were the law, and all activities were around the family rather than the individual. Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car.
“Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out and have a good time. In Germany, you walk, but you soon learn to like it.”
At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his idea. “I suppose I should criticize(批评) American schools," he says. "It is far too easy by our level. But I have to say that I like it very much. In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities. I think that maybe your schools are better in training for citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two.”
37. This year _______ teenagers will take part in the exchange program between America and other countries.
A. twenty-three hundred B. thirteen hundred
C. over three thousand D. less than two thousand
38. The whole exchange program is mainly to _______ .
A. help teenagers in other countries know the real America

39. What is particular in American schools is that _______ .
A. there is some middle ground between the two teaching buildings
B. there are a lot of outside activities
C. students usually take fourteen subjects in all
D. students go outside to enjoy themselves in a car
40. After experiencing the American school life, Mike thought _______ .
A. a better education should include something good from both America and Germany
B. German schools trained students to be better citizens
C. American schools were not as good as German schools
D. the easy life in the American school was more helpful to students

Studies have shown that petting a dog lowers a person's heart rate. 44
Dog owners are much more likely to survive a heart attack compared to non-dog owners. Male pet owners in particular tend to experience a reduced rate of heart disease.

第二节:语法填空(共10小题;每小题1.5分,共15分)
Few people I know seem to have much desire or time to cook. Making Chinese 66 (dish) is seen as especially troublesome. Many westerners 67 come to China cook much less than in their own countries once they realize how cheap 68 can be to eat out. I still remember 69 (visit) a friend who'd lived here for five years and I 70 (shock) when I learnt she hadn't cooked once in all that time.
While regularly eating out seems to 71 (become) common for many young people in recent years, it's not without a cost. The obvious one is money; eating out once or twice a week may be 72 (afford) but doing this most days adds up. There could be an even 73 (high) cost on your health. Researchers have found that there is a direct link between the increase in food eaten outside the home and the rise in 74 (weigh) problems.
If you are not going to suffer this problem, then I suggest that the next time you go to your mum's home 75 dinner, get a few cooking tips from her. Cooking food can be fun. You might also begin to notice the effects not only on your health but in your pocket.
