    第一节(15小题;每小题2 分,满分30)

    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(ABCD)中,选出最佳选项。

    A

    Welwitschia mirabilis

Title: the world’s most resistant plant

It’s not pretty to look at, but welwitschia mirabilis is unique. It consists of only two leaves and a strong stem with roots. Two leaves continue to grow and the stem(茎) thickens and can grow to be almost 2 meters high and 8 meters wide. Its lifespan is 400 to 1,500 years. It can survive up to five years with no rain. The plant is said to be very tasty either raw or baked in hot ashes.

    ◆ Dionaea muscipula

    Title: the Venus Fly Trap

Dionaea muscipula is the most famous carnivorous(肉食性的) plant due to the active and efficient nature of its unique trap. It may be famous, but it’s also threatened. It produces a short leaf that forms two sides of a trap. Each side contains some sensitive hairs. When it is touched two to three times, the trap will shut in less than a second, fast enough to catch flies and other insects. The leaf, once closed, produces some enzymes() that slowly dissolve the insects and supply the plant with food.

    ◆ Rafflesia arnoldii

    Title: the world’s largest flower

Rafflesia arnoldii, the largest flower in the world, is an exotic and rare plant. The flower is 3 feet across and weighs 15-24 pounds. However, you wouldn’t want to grow it in your garden. In a rainforest-type environment, it gives off a most unpleasant smell, which is somewhat like rotten meat. This is why it is often called the Corpse Plant by some natives of Indonesia where it comes. Its flowers only last for three days to a week.

    ◆ Euphorbia obese

    Title: the Baseball Plant

Euphorbia obese is known as the Baseball Plant. Over-harvesting by plant collectors for its interesting and curious appearance has severely reduced the wild population. However, it has become very common now. By growing euphorbia obese in large numbers, many gardens have been working to ensure that the plants being traded and sold among plant collectors are not wild plants.

    21. From the passage, we know that __________.

    A. welwitschia mirabilis is very beautiful

    B. dionaea muscipula is famous for its trap

    D. euphorbia obese can be used as baseball

    22. According to the passage, rafflesia arnoldii __________.

    D. has a big flower, a strong stem and two leaves

    23. Plant collectors like euphorbia obese because __________.

    A. it looks strange

    C. it can be planted in the garden

    D. it is worth a big fortune

With bushfires continuing to swallow different parts of Australia, a local zoo in New South Wales - the state which is the easiest to catch fire - has hit the headlines with a heartwarming story.

Right in the line of a bushfire, the keepers of Mogo Wildlife Park managed to protect all 200 animals from harm after they received evacuation(疏散,撤离) orders, according to reports.

Netizens were quick to react on social media and praised the bravery of the zoo keeper and staffs, as they stayed and managed to protect animals from uncontrolled fires and even sheltered some at their own house.

The 40-year-old zoo keeper, Chad Staples, described the situation as the worst catastrophe, which felt like Armageddon (末日审判) here. Luckily, his team had made a precise plan ahead of time by moving everything flammable from the area and the larger animals to safe places.

What’s remarkable is that as the smaller ones needed extra shelter, Staples decided to take them to his own house.

“Right now in my house there are animals of all descriptions in all the different rooms. They are safe and protected … not a single animal lost,” he said.

BBC news also mentioned that “there’s a tiger to the back of the house.”

Some media outlets highlighted the “heroic job” in their headlines. Online users also reacted with thumbs-up and were glad to see all the staff and animals coming through the horrific fire.

Located in the southern coast of New South Wales, Mogo Wildlife Park houses Australia’s largest collection of primates, also including different and unique animals such as zebras, giraffes, rhinos and red pandas.

    24. New South Wales hits the headlines because of ________.

    27. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

    A. The Heroic Job.                      B. The Horrific Fire.

Google's new camera, called Clips, is a small, smart device. It comes with a case that has a clip (夹子) , but it's not designed to be worn on your clothing. Most interestingly, it uses artificial intelligence to take photography out of your hands so it can capture moments on its own.

This roughly 2-inch by 2-inch camera, with a three-hour battery life and Gorilla Glass for toughness, is intended for candid moments, like when a child does something cute that may happen too quickly for you to pull out your smartphone.

Onboard the Clips device, it uses machine learning algorithms (计算程序) to help capture scenes. Those algorithms include face recognition. "Once it learns that there's a face you see frequently, it'll try to get nice photos of those faces," said Juston Payne, the device's product manager. And they also want it to recognize facial expressions, which involved "training it to know what happiness looks like". The Google team also trained it to recognize what not to shoot—like when a child's hand is over the lens(镜头), or if it is tossed in a dark purse.

The only way to see the images is by connecting the camera with your phone, as it has no screen for viewing or editing.

Were people concerned it could seem strange? Yes, Payne admitted. But they said they addressed that by making it obvious what it is. A green light on the front signals that it is on. Besides, unlike a camera meant to monitor your home, it is not connected to the Internet.

"This product is only possible because of the way that silicon has advanced" Payne said, noting that it was only in the past year or so that they could squeeze the technology down into a device this size. Going forward, we're likely to get more assistance from the artificial intelligence packed into our apps and gadgets.

    28. What is the most outstanding feature of Clips?

    A. It is equipped with tough glass.            B It enables easy Internet access.

C It allows of hands-free photography.        D. It can be worn on your clothing.

    29. What does the underlined word "candid" in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. brief. B. touching.

    C. unforgettable. D. embarrassing.

    30. What makes Clips a reality according to Juston Payne?

    A. The popularity of the Internet.             B. The advance in technology.

    C. The rise of the smartphone industry.         D. The reduction in the price of lens.

    31. What is the best title for the text?

    A. A New Digital Camera from Google.        B. New Gadgets in the Age of Apps.

    C. Artificial Intelligence in Everyday Life.      D. An Alternative Way to Photograph.

    D

Many people think that listening is a passive business. It is just the opposite. Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It is because they do not realize this, or because they are not willing to do the work, that most people do not listen well.

Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else. An essential part of listening well is the rule known as ‘bracketing’. Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires, to experience as far as possible someone else’s world from the inside, stepping into his or her shoes. Moreover, since listening well involves bracketing, it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person. Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part of his or her mind to the listener. True communication is under way and the energy required for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by the will to extend oneself for mutual growth.

Most of the time we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing is listening selectively. Often we have a prepared list in mind and wonder, as we listen, how we can achieve certain desired results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways more satisfactory to us. Many of us are far more interested in talking than in listening, or we simply refuse to listen to what we don’t want to hear.

It wasn’t until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic (有疗效的). In about a quarter of the patients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of psychotherapy (心理疗法), before any of the roots of problems had been uncovered or explained. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but chief among them, I believe, was the patient’s sense that he or she was being truly listened to, often for the first time in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever.

32What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2?

AHow to listen well. BWhat to listen to.

CBenefits of listening. DProblems in listening.

33According to the author, in communication people tend to ________.

    Alisten actively Blisten purposefully

Cset aside their prejudices Dopen up their inner mind

34According to the author, the patients improved mainly because _______.

Athey were taken good care of. Bthey knew they were truly listened to.

Cthey had partners to talk to. Dthey knew the roots of problems.

35What type of writing the article likely to be?

    AScience fiction BA news report.

    CA medical report. DPopular science

    第二节 (5小题, 每小题2, 满分10)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Social media, magazines and shop windows bombard (轰炸)people daily with things to buy. Online shopping means it is easy for customers to buy without thinking, while major brands offer such cheap clothes that they can be treated like disposable (—次性的)items.        36

In Britain, the average person spends more than £1,000 on new clothes a year, which is around four percent of their income.      37      But it hides two far more worrying trends for society and for the environment. First, a lot of that consumer spending is via credit cards. British people currently  owe approximately £670 per adult to credit card companies.

38      Britain throws away 300,000 tons of clothing a year, most of which goes into landfill sites.

People might not realize they are part of the disposable clothing problem because they donate their unwanted clothes to charities.      39      Huge quantities end up being thrown away, and a lot of clothes that charities can' t sell are sent abroad, causing even more economic and environmental problems.

40      The idea came up in Canada in the early 1990s and then moved to the US. ‘Buy Nothing' groups send a clear message to companies that people are no longer willing to accept the environmental and human cost of overcompensation.

    A. That figure may not sound like much to people.

    B. But charity shops can't sell all those unwanted clothes.

    C. The British people are deeply shocked by the unexpected statistics.

    D. Individuals can make a great difference in recycling these unwanted clothes.

    E. However, a‘buy nothing' trend is springing up in opposition to consumerism.

    F. All these have contributed to British consumers' buying more clothes than ever before.

    G. Also, not only are people spending money they don't have, they' re using it to buy things they don't need.
