Ryan Hreljac is a boy living in Canada. Without his help, hundreds of wells that now provide fresh water for people in Africa, Central America and India might never have been built. Ryan is what you might call a water ambassador(大使). He traveled the world to tell people how they can help solve a big problem: the lack of safe drinking water in many developing countries.
Ryan’s efforts didn’t begin in a far-off place, but right at home in Kemptville, Ontario.
When he was 6 years old, Ryan learned from his teacher that children in Africa often must walk miles each day to find water. Some even die from drinking bad water, his teacher said.
So Ryan decided to act. He did chores for his parents and neighbors. He spoke to schools, churches, and clubs about his goal. The word spread. After several months of hard work, Ryan had raised $ 2, 000, enough to dig one well.
An organization called Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief(CPAR) chose a site for the well in the village of Agweo, in Uganda. Two years later, CPAR arranged for Ryan to visit Uganda for the opening ceremony of the well. Ryan met a new friend named Jimmy. Then they formed a close friendship. He often traveled with Ryan to explain how water changed his life.
After the first well, "the ripple(涟漪)effect took over," Ryan says, "and one goal led to another." With adult help, he founded Ryan’s Well Foundation to educate people about the importance of water. Now the foundation has raised more than $ 1.5 million and built 255 wells that serve more than 427, 000 people in 12 countries. Ryan has received many awards but he isn't bragging(炫耀). "The most impressive people I’ve met are the other kids who want to help too," he says. "I'm just a typical kid. I had a small dream, and I stayed with it. Everybody can do something."
24. What problem is Ryan working to solve?
A. The effect of poverty on children. B. The diseases caused by polluted water.
C. A lack of safe drinking water. D. A lack of money to save water.

Breakfast is food for the brain and for the rest of your body. And downing those morning calories(卡路里)is worth it, even for people worried about their weight, a new study finds.
The study was led by Marlene Schwartz, a psychologist who studies obesity(肥胖). Her group studied some 600 middle-school students. Over three years, students from 12 different schools were asked about their breakfasts. Throughout the study about 34%-44% of all students said they regularly ate breakfast at home. Up to 17%, or almost one in every six kids. regularly ate breakfast at school. Overall, about one in every 10 kids reported eating breakfasts both at home and at school. Eating habits changed somewhat as the kids got older. For example, fifth graders were more likely to regularly eat breakfast at home. But by seventh grade, 22% of the studied kids often skipped breakfast(不吃早饭).
Surprisingly, at every age, kids who ate breakfast were less likely to be overweight. This was true even for those who ate breakfast at home and at school. It also found that students who skipped breakfast most often were those most likely to be overweight. These findings may seem puzzling. Yet Schwartz' s team can think of several possible explanations.
Skipping breakfast may set people up to be “over-hungry” later in the day, she says. Then someone may eat more food than their body needs. When that happens, it might take the brain longer to realize “you have enough food and can stop eating now”. What' s more, not eating in the morning prevents our brains and bodies from working well. It's very difficult for children to pay attention in class if they arrive without having breakfast.
But why should eating two breakfasts not lead to weight gain? One explanation may be that school breakfasts are very healthy and controlled in size, notes Schwartz. Also, most of the double-breakfast eaters are boys. These kids are active and actively growing. They sometimes eat twice as much as other people.
28. What is the function(作用) of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To make a comparison.

A. ate breakfast regularly at home B. ate breakfast regularly at school

During the ongoing battle against the Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia (NCP)(新型冠状肺炎), you may have read news that garlic(大蒜)can quickly kill the virus but it proved to be misinformation. While the nation continues to fight against the NCP, it's also stepping up efforts to fight the spread of misinformation.
In the Internet era(时代), the nature of how information spreads has changed largely. Information and misinformation can spread to thousands of people in seconds.
For most people, fact-checking is an afterthought-if it is a thought at all. Therefore, misinformation spreads, said The Washington Post. People simply prefer passing on information that will lead to an emotional response from readers. Whether or not it is factual is not always important.
Misinformation could be a greater danger than the virus itself. Misinformation is "making the work of our heroic workers even harder", World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros told China Daily. He said misinformation "causes confusion and spreads fear".
During the fight against the NCP, Ghebreyesus said that "at the WHO we’re not just fighting against the virus, we're also battling…conspiracy(阴谋)theories that undermine our response."
It is true that as China races to contain the NCP and minimize(减少到最低限度)its spread across countries. fears and rumors(谣言)surrounding the virus are creating their own problems on social media. "Ironically(讽刺地), speed is important on those things." US professor Gabriel Kahn told The Los Angeles Times. "But…those are the ones you have to be most certain about verifying(验证)before you share."
As ordinary people, we may not be able to devote ourselves like those medical staff. But we could think twice about what we read. If you can be careful about sharing information, it’s your contribution to the fight against the outbreak.
32. According to the article, what is the main cause of the spread of misinformation?
A. The lack of fact-checking. B. An increase in viruses.
C. People’s desire to trick others. D. Changes in the way people view information·
33. What does the underlined word "undermine" in Para. 5 probably mean?
A. Test. B. Harm. C. Guide. D. Explain.
34. What problem has been found during the battle against the NCP?
A. People have fears caused by misinformation.
B. It is hard to deal with misinformation across countries.
C. Rumors about the virus travel too fast to be controlled.
D. Social media creates problems for people to verify misinformation.
35. What is the author's purpose in writing the article?
A. To share tips on how to fight against misinformation.
B. To introduce some misinformation about the NCP.
C. To call on people to watch out for misinformation.
D. To tell people what China has done to deal with misinformation.
第二节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many people think that personal development is something they can’t do, but the truth is that everyone can help themselves personally develop. 36
A great way to help one’s mood is to live in the here and now. The idea is similar to the idea in Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now. If you live in the present moment, you cannot ever possibly be in pain, because to know pain there has to be a past.
37 During hard times we tend to always think about what is troubling us and lose sight of the bigger picture. Faith(信念)helps one focus on that bigger picture while changing the focus from hardship to a higher power.
To help yourself, focus on helping others. 38 Do you view them as unique individuals who are worthy of respect, or do you just see them as obstacles(绊脚石)who are always getting in your way? The more you care about others, the more you will care for yourself.
When you are trying to improve yourself, it is important to remember to focus on one thing at a time. 39 This leads to upset and finally you may give up.
One of the most important things about self-improvement is to set achievable goals for yourself. Setting goals that are unreachable will only make you feel discouraged!
The information you just looked at should help you to feel more confident of your efforts to grow as an individual. 40
A. If you try to improve several different things, you may lose control of all of them.
B. You might find a few new suggestions in this article.
C. God helps those who help themselves.
D. Sometimes finding the faith to devote oneself to is a great self-help idea.

A light knock on the door brought me from my kitchen. Because we had just moved into a new neighborhood, I couldn't imagine who it would be. When I opened the door, an old man stood there, who was dressed in dirty clothes and wearing dirty rubber boots. His hand hung a plastic bag.
"Can I help you?" I asked.
"Would you like to buy some fresh garden vegetables?" he said, his blue eyes full of hope.
"Are they from your garden?" I looked inside his plastic bag and saw some carrots with soil.
"Yes," his voice was soft. "And I can get some apples from a tree in my yard. Would you like some of those, too?"
My heart softened, and I wondered if he was badly in need of quite a bit of money. With a sigh(叹息)I said, "Please step inside and I'll get my money."
The next day, he knocked at our door again. This time, my little four-year-old daughter got there first. "Oh, hello. Would you like to come in for tea?" Without a second thought, the old man stepped inside and held out a broken basket with several bruised(擦伤的)apples. "From my tree," he said, removing a worn cap. "You might like to make apple pie."
The three of us sat at the kitchen table and drank our tea. It was clear that my daughter liked hosting a visitor in her never-ending questions. "What is your name? Where do you live? Why are your clothes so dirty?"
The homeless-looking man laughed as he answered each question. His name was Mr. Locket and he lived around the corner. His wife had passed away several years before, and his children all lived far away. He was lonely. His need for company(陪伴)had sent him door to door selling fruit and vegetables. Ours was the only door opened to him.
