第二部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2.5分,满分50分)
A
As we all know, millions of people worldwide cook their food over smoky fire every day. It is often difficult to find wood for the fire. People who do not have wood must spend large amounts of money on cooking fuel. However, there is a much easier way to cook food using energy from the sun.
Solar cooker, or ovens, have been used for centuries. A Swiss scientist made the first solar oven in seventeen sixty-seven. Today, people are using solar cookers in many countries around the world. People use solar ovens to cook food and to heat drinking water to kill bacteria and other harmful organisms.
There are three kinds of solar ovens. The first is a box cooker. It is designed with a special wall that shines or reflects sunlight into the box. Heat gets trapped under a piece of glass or plastic covering the top of the cooker. A box oven is effective for slow cooking of large amounts of food.
The second kind of solar oven is a panel cooker. It includes several flat walls or panels that directly reflect the sun’s light onto the food. The food is inside a separate container of plastic or glass that traps heat energy. People can build panel cookers quickly and with very few supplies. They do not cost much. In Kenya, for example, panel cookers are being manufactured for just two dollars.
The third kind of solar oven is a parabolic cooker. It has rounded walls that aim sunlight directly into the bottom of the oven. Food cooks quickly in parabolic ovens. However, these cookers are hard to make. They must be re-aimed often to follow the sun. Parabolic cookers can also cause burns and eye injuries if they are not used correctly.
You can make solar ovens from boxes or heavy paper. They will not catch fire. Paper burns at two hundred thirty-two degrees Celsius. A solar cooker never gets that hot. Solar ovens cook food at low temperatures over long periods of time. This permits people to leave food to cook while they do other things.
21. If you have much food to cook, you’d better choose ______.
A. a box cooker B. a panel cooker C. a parabolic cooker D. a paper cooker
22. According to the passage we can conclude that ______.
A. a panel cooker is easy to make B. a box cooker is easy to make
C. a box cooker is the most effective oven D. a panel cooker is the cheapest oven of the three
23. What is the main purpose of the author in writing the passage?
A. To advertise the solar ovens.
B. To help readers to save cost on fuel.
C. To tell the readers how to make solar ovens.
D. To give the readers brief introduction of solar ovens.

A 24-year-old female space commander has become a viral sensation on Chinese social media for her work.
Zhou Chengyu was in charge of the rocket connector system—described as a vital role. Her story in particular has drawn the public’s attention given her young age. Social media users have been celebrating her brilliance and referring to her as pride of the country.
Being the youngest of the team, Zhou Chengyu was born in 1996 in the province of Guizhou. She is certainly not “old” enough compared with her colleagues, but she is known at work as “Big Sister” as a sign of respect. Once in a 3-km running contest, she actually beat half of her male counterparts. Although work shifts are not uncommon at the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site, each shift requires tremendous courage because of the different background knowledge. However, for Zhou Chengyu, she experienced multiple positions in 5 launching tests and now she is the youngest commander at the site.
Despite carefulness and high responsibility at work, she is just like her peers in normal life. Eating snacks and shopping are her favorite free-time activities. Her high school teacher remembers her as tough and determined. “She always had a dream of becoming scientist,” said her physics teacher.
According to her colleague, Zhou Chengyu was very surprised when she found out she went viral online. She said that she was happy when she saw people online regarding her as the pride of the country, and yet she kept saying that she was “nobody but normal worker at a launch site” and there are a lot more people just like her going unnoticed while doing the hardest job to guarantee a better future for the Chinese space program. She also said that she wished to remain her current status and continue doing her work with or without the popularity.

It’s lunchtime, and I’m eager to try a new establishment that opened near our office in midtown Manhattan. I walk to the shiny new storefront, place my order and make my way to the counter to pay. As I dig into my wallet and start to pull out some cash, the person behind the counter interrupts me.“No cash, please!” says the cashier.
These days, establishments that no longer accept cash have increased greatly. It’s long been said that “cash is king”, but the tendency could be turning in the US. While cash continues to be the most common payment method among consumers, its usage is declining. The use of cash in 2019 dropped by 3 percentage points to 30 percent of all transactions in just two years, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco’s 2020 Diary of Consumer Payment Choice. What’s more, because cash is most likely to be used in small transactions ($10 or less), it accounted for only 9 percent of the total payment value in the same year. The use of cards, at the same time, has held steady, and mobile payments have begun to grow.
Nearly cashless societies are already a reality outside the US. In Sweden, cash accounts for only 2 percent of the value of all payments, and total cash in circulation accounts for just 1 percent of Swedish GDP. China, meanwhile, leads the way in mobile payments, recording more than $20 trillion in 2019.
But should a cashless future be accepted enthusiastically?
It’s true that not handling cash could allow for an increase in speed and efficiency. Cashless payments, however, have their downside. We might start to see a rise in cybercrimes, while a cashless society could decrease physical crimes. Critics argue that cashless establishments unfairly affect those who are less likely to have access to noncash payment methods—namely the unbanked/underbanked. According to the Pew Research Center, those in households earning less than $30,000 per year are more likely to use cash than those with higher incomes.
A cashless society, no doubt, has its advantages, but it can also bring a host of new challenges.
28. What’s the function of paragraph 1?
A. To advises an establishment. B. To tells the author’s experience.
C. To informs us a free establishment. D. To introduces the topic.
29. What can we learn about the use of cash in the US in 2019?
A. It saw a fall. B. It accounted for 3% of all its transactions.
C. It only happened in small transactions. D. It was less frequent than the use of mobile payments.
30. Why does the author mention Sweden and China?
A. To list the benefits of cashless payments.
B. To voice his doubt about cashless societies.
C. To show the global spread of cashless societies.
D. To show the influence of cashless payments on people’s life.
31. What’s the author’s attitude to cashless payments?
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Unclear. D. Indifferent.

Honeybees can’t swim, and when their wings are wet, they can’t fly, either. But Chris Roh and other researchers at the California Institute of Technology found that when bees drop into bodies of water, they can use their wings to produce little waves and slide toward land—like surfers who create and then ride their own waves.
As with many scientific advances—Isaac Newton’s apple or Benjamin Franklin’s lightning bolt—Dr. Roh’s experiment began with a walk. Passing Caltech’s Millikan Pond in 2016, he observed a bee on the water’s surface producing waves. He wondered how an insect known for flight could push itself through water.
Dr. Roh and his co-worker, Morteza Gharib, used butterfly nets to collect local Pasadena honeybees and observed their surf-like movements. The researchers used a wire to restrict each bee’s bodily movement, allowing close examination of their wings. They found that the bee bends its wings at a 30-degree angle, pulling up water and producing a forward force. Bees get trapped on the surface because water is roughly three times heavier than air. But that weight helps to push the bee forward when its wings move quickly up and down. It’s a tough exercise for the bees, which the researchers guess could handle about 10 minutes of the activity.
The researchers said the surf-like movement hasn’t been documented in other insects and most semiaquatic insects use their legs for pushing power, which is known as water-walking. It may have developed in bees, they predicted.
Dr. Roh and Dr. Gharib have imagined many practical applications for bees’ surfing. One plan is to use their observations to design robots able to travel across sky and sea. “This could be useful for search and rescues, or for getting samples of the surface of the ocean, if you can’t send a boat or helicopter,” Dr. Gharib said.
32. What does the author intend to show by mentioning Newton and Franklin?
A. Roh’s admiration for them. B. Their similar achievements in discovery.
C. Their outstanding talent for science. D. Roh’s chance discovery about bees.
33. What plays the most vital role in a bee’s moving forward on water?
A. The air weight. B. Its continuous wing beat.
C. The water movement. D. It’s leg extension.
34. What’s the author’s attitude towards using this observation?
A. Supportive. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Worried.
35. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. Bees help scientists make inventions. B. Honeybees can surf to safety.
C. Insects can adapt to the environment. D. Nature is a helpful guide for discovery.

Bathed in two cultures from childhood, moving around the world and experiencing different cultures has always been my thing. When I was in high school I heard about students in my class wanting to take the SAT test and study abroad in the USA. 36 Actually, what I wanted to experience most was the European lifestyle and cultural mix.
I used to travel a lot around Europe with my parents as a little kid, and also not forgetting that the French Language is one of my mother tongues, France seemed therefore like a top choice for me. French universities have a good reputation and the French capital is internationally well known for its cultural history. 37 My university was in one of those small cities and I also got the chance to obtain a scholarship which made it easier for me to start my studies.
38 Opportunities are offered to develop our network and explore the business world. The university participated as a partner in international networking courses leading to a European Master’s degree, a double degree, or training abroad.
39 So, if you are an international student who came to France for studies, you can take the chance to explore another country for a term and study in English. I remember wanting to take this opportunity in my first year of my college life and try the program which back then offered students the chance to go on an exchange with Linnaeus University in Sweden. 40
A. I applied and was lucky to get accepted.
B. But I was not that attracted to studying there.
C. You can find a lot of student-friendly cities as well.
D. Besides, all these universities have their own unique advantages.
E. The university I chose was small but used to invite business chiefs and directors.
F. Because there are many universities with good reputation which attracts students.
G. Plus, all French universities work with several countries to offer an exchange program.

第六部分 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Six decade years ago, a 13-year-old boy saw a beautiful hairpin (发夹) in a shop window which set his heart racing. But the price—five dollars—was too high for Jack. Five dollars would buy almost a week’s food for his family.
Jack couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his shabby shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on such things. It should be kept for a while.”
Jack respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that hairpin. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Jack suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Jack knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin.

Paragraph 1: Every day after school, Jack started his plan. Cold and hungry, Jack wandered the streets, searching for the nail bags carefully. To save more money, he even decided to deliver papers in the early morning. Exhausted and tired as he felt, he still stuck to the plan. It was the hairpin in the shop window that reminded him that what he did was worthwhile. After a long time of hard work, he made it eventually.
Paragraph 2: Finally the time came! He took out the soda tin, poured the coins out and began to count them. Five dollars! His hard work paid off! Holding the soda tin firmly, Jack rushed for the shop to buy the hairpin. The moment he got the beautiful hairpin, he rushed home and placed it in his mother’s hand. Never had Dora received such a gift. Speechless and happy, she held her son tightly into her arms, with tears welling up in her eyes. It was an unforgettable experience, which all the family members will remember.

Text 10 Well, folks, it’s time for the weekly weather report. We have a lot of different kinds of weather coming at us over the next several days. On Monday and Tuesday, the weather will be just as pleasant as it has been lately. Warm days, cooler nights, with a light wind from the ocean coming across the hills: beautiful late summer weather — so get outside and enjoy it! (18) By Tuesday evening, though, the weather will turn. We’ll be getting the first of the autumn rains. The storm system will come down from the north, from the direction of Fremont. Our area will be hit hardest with rain — we should receive up to an inch of rain overnight! With the storm, much cooler weather will come. You’d better pack your summer clothes away, because you won’t need them for a long time! By Friday morning, all the wet weather will have passed. (19) But the temperatures will drop even further into the weekend. And since Gilroy is not very close to the sea, we can expect the weather to remain cool for quite some time. But if we get lucky, we’ll have hot weather once more before winter. Late September and early October generally bring a couple of weeks that feel like summer. (20)
