Who are they ?
Guo Jingjing
Born on 15 October 1981, Guo Jinging is seen as one of the most successful female divers in Olympic history. She joined the Chinese national team in 1992. Then she entered her first Olympic competition in 1996. She won fifth place in platform diving. In the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, she received her first gold medal. J.K.Rowling was born on 31 July 1965 in England. She is best-known as the author of the Harry Potter series, which has been translated into 65 languages. At six, J. K. Florence Nightingale

Last week, we explained that the planet Mars had passed “opposition” (相对点), a point opposite the Sun. This week, we tell about the planet’s surprising movement among the stars.
For thousands of years, people have recognized (辨别出) that planets travel among the stars. Sometimes the movement of the planets can confuse(使困惑) us. Everyone knows the Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. But this is caused by the movement of the Earth. Planets generally move from west to east.
However, it seems that Mars will move backward for about two months this year. This happens because the Earth is going past Mars on its way around the Sun. Mars began to move backward, or westward on May 11th. It will start moving eastward again on July 19th.
Astronomers can’t explain Mars’ movement for hundreds of years. Most early theories(理论) of the solar system (太阳系) argued that the Sun and planets turned around the Earth. But the problem was that Mars suddenly moved westward. Why would Mars move west for two months when it nears “opposition”?
In 1543, a Polish church worker named Nicholas Copernicus published a different theory. His theory said the Earth and planets moved around the Sun in perfectly circular (圆形的) orbits (轨道). Copernicus’ theory was simpler. But his Sun-centred system still did not explain the movement of Mars very well .
Finally, a German mathematician (数学家) named Johannes Kepler published a complete theory of the movement of the planets in 1619. He had carefully studied the movement of Mars for many years.
Johannes Kepler discovered that the planets do not move in circular orbits around the Sun. Instead, they travel in flattened (扁平的) orbits. Mars’ flattened orbits explain why it is surprisingly bright and large this year.
