It may sound like a failure, but it actually is a big step forward for xenotransplantation(异种器官移植).
Xenotransplantation has been a hot topic in medical research for many years.Doctors and scientists look for ways to solve the big problem of organ (器官)transplant waiting lists. In the US alone, over 100,000 patients are on a list waiting for new organs. Many of them will die before getting their chance to receive a heart,a kidney(肾)or other important organs. As a result, medical science has turned to animal organs.
Doctors have experimented with xenotransplantation since the early 20th century. There are few success stories.Usually, patients' bodies reject (排斥)the animal organs.Bennet lived much longer than other xenotransplantation patients. That's because scientists removed pig genes(基因)that would cause fast rejection. Then they added human genes to help the body accept the organ.
In fact,Bennett's case was not the only success.Doctors at New York University attached(连接)gene﹣edited pig kidneys to a human patient's blood vessels(血管)outside of the boody in 2021.Doctors at University of Alabama put the gene﹣edited pig kidneys inside a patient's body in the same year.
Though these successes were short﹣lived, they show that there may be a way forward for xenotransplantation. 17.(2022•贵港)It's often said,"You can't live only on air." But now the Chinese scientists can tell you:Maybe you can.
Recently, some Chinese scientists have made a big breakthrough (突破).They turned CO2 into starch (淀粉).
Starch is the main part of rice and corn that we eat every day.Usually,it's created by plants with CO2,water and sunlight.According to the team's director Ma Yanhe,it takes the plants nearly sixty steps to produce starch. But now,the team, after six years of hard work, has found a simpler way to do this, with only eleven steps.
"Our study shows that creating something like starch is possible in a laboratory, and this technology may be helpful in many areas," said Ma.
The scientists first turned CO2 and hydrogen (氢气) into methanol (甲醇).Then they made these methanol molecules (分子) into bigger and more complex (复杂的) molecules. Finally the starch came out.
This method makes it possible to produce food in factories instead of traditional farming. This will not only help make plenty of food, but also save water and land.It may also help recycle CO2 to deal with climate (气候) change, according to China Daily.
The study can be helpful in space, too.Astronauts may no longer need to worry about their food as they travel in space. They may simply turn the CO2 they breathe out into the food they eat!

18.(2022•贵港)Now,more and more people have difficulties in falling asleep. "In fact,we can train our brain to fall asleep," says sleep expert Michael Grandner. Here are his top ways.
Make a plan and stick to it.
Melatonin (褪黑素) is produced by the body to control when you get sleepy and when you wake up.As night falls, the levels of melatonin rise, telling the body that it's time for bed.And the levels naturally fall as daylight comes near, getting you ready to greet the day.
The release (释放) of melatonin needs to be at regular (有规律的) times. So if your bedtime and wake﹣up time change from day to day, your body doesn't know how to respond (回应).So it's important to have a regular bedtime and wake﹣up time, even on weekends.
    Don't lie in bed awake.
In fact, this way is very helpful.Whether it's the beginning of the night or the middle of the night,if you've been awake for 20 or 30 minutes, get up.Maybe you just need five minutes to get sleepy,or maybe an hour, but don't spend that time awake in bed.
Change your attitude (态度) about sleep.
Many people regard sleeping as the final thing in a busy day,so they would rather delay sleeping to do housework, schoolwork or others. That thought needs to be changed.Make sure your sleep time is enough in order to work better the next day.It may sound like a small change, but it's an important one.

On Dec.9,three Chinese astronauts gave a science lecture 400 kilometers above Earth!Zhai Zhigang,Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu who are working aboard the Tiangong space station, showed our students a glimpse of their life there. They also did some fun science experiments.Let's take a look at some of them.
    Use it or lose it
The human body grows with the pull of Earth's gravity (重力).But in space, our bones and muscles (肌肉) don't need to support our body's weight. This will cause bone and muscle loss. It's reported that astronauts can lose up to 20% of their muscles after just a couple of weeks. That is dangerous for astronauts because they will be too weak to work.
Astronauts have different ways to prevent this.During the lecture,Zhai introduced a special uniform Ye was wearing. It's called a "penguin suit".There are many elastic bands(弹力带)inside the suit.Wearing it,astronauts use their muscles to stretch(拉伸) the bands. This keeps their muscles strong.Wang also showed students how she walked on a treadmill (跑步机) and rode a bicycle.Astronauts exercise with these tools every day to prevent muscle loss.
    Space water is different
Water in space acts differently from water on Earth in other ways. For example, water will not flow(流动) downward if you try to pour it into a cup. That's why astronauts usually drink water through straws(吸管)in sealed(密封的)bags. If astronauts cry,the tears will stay on their eyeballs instead of falling down. They have to wipe(擦拭)them away!
During another experiment,Wang made a water film (膜).Then she added more water drops onto the film to make it a water ball. This can never happen on Earth.

②A new study from the University of Oxford has looked into the health and environmental influences of 15 foods common in western diets.Among these, plant based(基于植物的) foods included fruits, vegetables, nuts and potatoes. It also studied animal﹣based foods, including red meat, chicken, milk products, eggs and fish.
③According to the study's lead researcher,Michael Clark, "Choosing better and greener diets is one of the main ways people can improve their health and protect the environment." That is to say, plant﹣based diets are much healthier for us and kinder to the environment.
④To get this result, researchers compared the influence of eating another portion(一份) of each food with the increased risk of a few illnesses. They also find out the environmental harm for each animal﹣based food and each plant﹣based food.
⑤By using this method, the study found that red meats were the most unfriendly foods to the environment.Keeping farm animals produces a large number of methane(甲烷) that keeps 30 times more heat than CO2.As well as making the earth warmer, eating too much red meat is known to increase the risk of a few illnesses, such as heart trouble.
⑥Plant﹣based diets can give us the same health benefits in a much greener way.According to the study, without eating or using meat and milk products, global farmland use could be cut down by more than 75% and still feed the world.

A company called Paboco has been working with many large companies to develop paper bottles. These companies are creating their own bottle designs.
Clearly, one of the biggest challenges is keeping a paper bottle from leaking(渗漏).The inside of the bottle needs a special liner(衬层) to make sure the liquid doesn't leak through. Many companies are lining their bottles with thin plastic.
Though bottle makers may say this liner can be removed and recycled, many recycling programs don't have the right machines to deal with these liners.
A Danish beer company called Carlsberg is working with Paboco on a paper bottle called the "Green Fiber Bottle".Now the bottle uses a plastic liner. In the future the company hopes to use a "bioplastic(生物塑料)" that will break down naturally over time.
But even without the plastic, paper bottles aren't perfect. Most paper bottles use wood pulp(木浆).That could lead to the loss of forests.
Frugalpac,a company from the United Kingdom, has created bottle made of recycled paper,so no tees need to be cut down.Frugalpac still uses plastic liners, though.
