| Step1. Lead in Look and think: Natural disasters flood, mudslide, forest fire, earthquake … What else natural disasters do you know?
Step2. Words Learn the new words in this unit and pay attention to the key words.
Step3. Pre-reading What do you know about …? In pairs, discuss the following questions. What other natural disasters can you think of? What should people do when there is a natural disaster? Before you read Look at the pictures, the title and the first paragraph of the story on page 51. Then circle the best answers.
Step4. While- reading Listen and read the passage.
Step5. Language points 1. It started to worry me. start to do sth. 开始做某事 e.g. I distinctly felt the heat start to sear my throat. 我明显感到嗓子开始烧得难受。 2. Would anyone remain alive? remain:to stay in the same place or in the same condition 停留,留下;保持不变,仍然是 e.g. The doctor ordered him to remain in bed for a few days. 医生嘱咐他要继续卧床几天。 【拓展】 remain: to continue to exist when other parts or other things no longer exist 剩余;余留;遗留 e.g. After the flood, nothing remained of the village. 洪水过后,村庄荡然无存。 alive: living, not dead 活(着)的;在世的 e.g. He must be 90 if he's still alive. 如果他还在世的话,肯定有90岁了。 remain alive中alive为系动词,后接形容词,作表语。 【辨析】 living和alive: living一般只作定语。如:living things等 alive常作表语、后置定语、宾语补足语等。 如:The missing girl was found in the woods, alive. 3. My bedroom floor was a pool of water. a pool of 一摊……一汪……一池…… e.g. The pot was sitting in a pool of water. 罐子放在水里。 4. I had to do something! have to do sth. 不得不做某事 e.g. All you have to do is to vote. 你们所要做的就是去投票。 5. I tried to call my dad, but the line was dead. try to do sth. 尽力做某事;努力做某事 e.g. First try to do something that is within your scope. 你先试着做一件自己力所能及的事。 6. It’s important to stick with it. It’s … to do sth. 做某事是……的 e.g. It’s easy to make a mistake. 犯错误很容易。 7. I can’t afford to sit around and worry about the flood. afford to do sth. 负担得起做某事 e.g. Small companies simply can’t afford to do this. 小公司就根本承受不起。 8. I have no time to think about the flood. have no time to do sth. 没时间做某事 e.g. I have no time to go on a date. 我都没有时间去约会。 9. It seemed that they did not want to leave. it seems that +从句 似乎...... e.g. It seems that he has already found his wallet. 他似乎已经找到了他的钱包。 10. Last week in Geography class, we learnt that if all the ice in the North and South Poles melted, sea level around the world would rise, and many cities would be flooded and disappear. We learnt that …中that引导宾语从句。 此外,宾语从句中又包含if条件句, 且条件句使用了虚拟语气, 表示与现在事实相反的猜测。 11. Last night, I dreamt about a great flood. 此处dream是不及物动词, 要表示“做梦”需用dream about或dream of。 我们也常用dream of 表示“梦想”之意。 e.g. I dream of travelling around the world when I grow up.
