| Step1. Lead in Look and think: Do you know what kind of natural disaster this is? Today we will learn an ice storm happened in Canada in 1988.
Step2. More practice Read the passage and answer the questions. Why the rain in Canada in 1988 is special? How long did the rain last? Why was it very dangerous to walk or drive anywhere? What are the serious consequences of this disaster? What was the damage after the ice storm stopped? Why the Canadians will never forget the ice storm in 1988? Read this article. Then answer the questions. 1 Why was the storm in 1988 unusual in Canada? 2 What problems did the ice storm cause? 3 Did the trouble end when the ice storm stopped? Why or Why not?
Step3. Discussion Have you ever experienced or heard about a disaster? In groups, discuss the following questions. 1 What was the natural disaster like? 2 What did people experience during the disaster?
Step4. Group work Do you remember or hear about WenChuan earthquake? Search it on the Internet and talk about it with your group members. How severe was the earthquake? What are the effects of the earthquake on people's lives?

It was a dark day in Canada in 1998 when rain began to fall from the sky. fall from 从……落下;跌落=drop from e.g. As autumn draws near, leaves begin to fall from the trees. 秋天来了,树叶开始凋落。 2. However, this was not ordinary rain- it turned to ice as it fell through the cold air. ordinary :not different or special or unexpected in any way; usual 普通的,平常的;平凡的;一般的 e.g. It was just an ordinary day. 那只是普普通通的一天。 3. It rained for six days, and as much as ten centimetres of ice collected on roads, trees and power lines. as much as 几乎;多达;至多 e.g. He doesn't earn as much as I do. 他挣的钱不如我多。 4. On 5th January, the people of Montreal woke up to find they had no electricity in their homes. woke up 是 wake up 的过去式;意为“醒来” e.g. Do you usually wake up at night? 你经常半夜醒来吗? 5. The roads were covered in ice, so it was very dangerous to walk or drive anywhere. be covered in 被……覆盖 e.g. Look! Your shoes are covered in mud. 瞧,你的鞋沾满了泥。 6. However, the ice kept falling. keep doing 继续做;一直做…… e.g. We can keep doing this again and again. 我们可以一直这样做下去。 7. The huge amount of ice made the whole area very dangerous. the amount of ……的数量 e.g. The amount of the donation took us completely by surprise. 捐款的数目完全出乎我们的意料。 make +宾语+形容词 :使某人/某物…… e.g. The news that our team had won made us very happy. 我们队获胜的消息使我们大家非常高兴。 8. As the ice started to melt, it fell from the roofs of buildings and trees like knives. start to do sth. 开始做某事 e.g. Then they start to make a snowman. 接着,他们开始堆雪人。 9. As the ice started to melt, it fell from the roofs of buildings and trees like knives. melt :to turn from something solid into something soft or liquid, or to cause something to do this (使)融化;(使)熔化;(使)溶解 e.g. The snow usually melts by mid March. 通常雪到3月中旬就都融化了。 10. Most of the power lines were so badly damaged that they could not be repaired. badly :in a severe and harmful way adv.严重地 e.g. Fortunately, none of the passengers was badly hurt in the crash. 幸运的是,撞车事故中没有乘客受重伤。
Step6. Culture corner Can you say some names of typhoons? Read the text again and answer the questions. Why was a new system for naming typhoons established? How many names does each of the countries and regions offer? How do they name the typhoons when the end of the list is reached?
Step7. Discussion Do you know the names of any famous typhoons? What else do you know about them?
