    第一节 (15小题: 每小题2分,满分30)

    阅读下列四篇短文,从每小题后所给的ABCD四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

    A

For some of us who long to travel, it can be difficult to find someone to journey with. Friends and family members are tied down in jobs, struggling to save money, and don’t always want to go to the same places. The solution, of course, is to go it alone.

    Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne is a hot-spot travel destination, which has beautiful beaches as well as busy and lively city life. Australia as a whole is considered a safe destination for international travel, and because of that, many solo (单独) travelers go there. Melbourne is incredibly easy to get around because you can walk or bike practically anywhere!

    Thailand

Thailand is great for solo travelers-perhaps because it is one of the Buddhist mentality, which promotes equality among the sexes. Thailand is known for its friendly hospitality, and as a travel hot-spot, there are plenty of chances to meet other like-minded travelers. Overall known for being very cheap, especially in the north, it’s a good choice if you want to get away on a little money.

    Bhutan

Bhutan is one of the most cultural countries in the world. It is also home to the world’s highest unclimbed peak, Gangkhar Puensum. The mountain is sacred (神圣的) and entry is only possible on a pre-booked tour, where you are accompanied around by your own personal guide. Plastic bags are not permitted in Bhutan. In 2004, it became the first country in the world to outlaw tobacco.

    Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a great place if you’re looking for adventure, with surfing, volcanoes and other recreational activities. You’ll never get a chance to feel lonely because there’s an abundance of exciting adventures to experience! Costa Rica has never seen political unrest, class struggles or revolutions commonly associated with other Latin American Countries. What’s more, it doesn’t have or need an army because it’s such a peaceful country.

    21. Which place is suitable for travelers short of money?

    A. Melbourne, Australia.    B. Thailand.     C. Bhutan.      D. Costa Rica.

    22. What can we learn about traveling in Bhutan?

    A. You can climb the mountain without looking ahead.

    B. You can experience water adventures, such as surfing.

    C. Smoking is allowed at the foot of the mountain.

    D. You shouldn’t use plastic bags for your rubbish.

    23. Where does this text probably come from?

    A. A historical textbook.   B. A science magazine.  C. A travel guide.  D. An advertisement.

    B

Preschool girl lifts old man’s spirits

When Tara Wood brought her daughter to a grocery store to buy the four-year-old some cupcakes, she had no idea that would be a life-changing experience.

As Tara pushed her daughter Norah around the store last month, she passed an old man who was by himself. The old man looked cold, until Norah shouted to him, “Hi! It’s my birthday today!” The man stopped and his demeanor changed from distant and serious to warm and friendly. “How old are you today?” the man asked. After some time talking together, Norah asked her mom to take a picture of her with her new friend “Mr Dan”, Dan Peterson, 82. They hugged and after ten minutes went their separate ways. That could have been the end of the story. But it is actually the beginning of a special relationship.

Tara posted the picture of her daughter and Mr. Dan on Facebook and someone who recognized him reached out to her with his contact information. It turned out that Mr. Dan’s wife died in March and he had been suffering from depression and anxiety ever since. The person on Facebook told Tara that it was the first time they had seen Mr. Dan smile since the death of his wife. Knowing that, Tara contacted Mr. Dan, and ever since Norah and the 82-year-old have developed a friendship unlike any other. “She has shown me a depth of love, a depth that I didn’t know existed,” Mr. Dan told the reporter.

Mr. Dan told Tara that before meeting Norah, he hadn’t had one night of uninterrupted sleep. Anxiety kept him up at all hours and made him restless. After meeting Norah, he said he now sleeps soundly. For Mr. Dan’s 82nd birthday on October 20, the mother and the daughter brought balloons and presents—and, of course, cupcakes. Mr. Dan will also spend a day around Thanksgiving with Norah and her family. “If you don’t take the time to notice people, you will never know how you can positively impact a life,” Tara Wood said.

    C. We should not judge a person at first sight.  D.Good things will happen if one keeps trying.

A study has found that a lifetime of regular exercise and activity can slow down the aging process. Researchers say that getting older should not necessarily mean becoming more weak or sick. Their research shows that a devotion to a life of movement and exercise may help us live not only longer, but also healthier.

For their study, the researchers looked at two groups. The first group was made up of 125 non-professional cyclists between the ages of 55 to 79. This group included 84 healthy men and 41 healthy women. We will call this group the “cyclists”.

Researchers then found 130 people to make up a second group. Within this group, 75 people were aged from 57 to 80. The other 55 were between the ages of 20 and 36. The people in this group were also healthy, but they did not exercise regularly. We will call this group the “non-exercisers”. Smokers, heavy drinkers of alcohol and people with other health issues were not included in the study.

Then, researchers gave both groups a series of tests. They tested their muscle mass(肌肉质量), muscular strength, percentage of body fat and the strength of their immune(免疫的)systems. Then the researchers compared the results of the two groups.

Results showed that the cyclists did not experience body changes usually regarded as a normal aging process. For example, they did not lose muscle mass or muscular strength. Also, their body fat did not increase with age.

The researchers also found something they had not expected. The study showed that the immune systems of the cyclists did not age either.

The researchers advise us all to find an exercise that we like in our lives.

    28. How did the researchers carry out the study?

    A. By comparing.   B. By discussing.     C. By imagining.       D. By reasoning.

    29. Which of the following is a result of the research?

    A. The cyclists kept a thin body shape.

    B. The non-exercisers gained weight easily.

    C. The cyclists’ muscles remained strong with age.

    D. The non-exercisers usually had health problems.

    30. Which is an unexpected result for the researchers?

    A. The cyclists had normal aging process.     B. The cyclists’ immune systems didn’t age.

    C. The cyclists lost nearly all their fat.        D. Everyone needed an exercise in their lives.

    31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A. Healthy People Need More Exercise       B. Take an Exercise, the Harder, the Better

    C. Cycling Is the Best Way to Prevent Aging  D. A Lifetime of Exercise Slows Aging Process

    D

The film “Avatar” has received great popularity around the world. It turned out to be a great success. The film got 1 billion in ticket sales in a very short time. The story in the film happens on an alien planet called Pandora where many strange species live. Among the planet’s inhabitants(居民,栖息动物)the one that has the most similarities with humans is the Na’vi, and it is the struggle between the Ma’vi and human invaders(入侵者) that forms the story of the film.

As to the factors leading to the film’s success, many think that the entertaining feast for the eyes and the wonderful story shouldn’t be forgotten, but the new language invented especially for the film which provides audiences with a new experience also plays an important part.

In order to increase the truthfulness of an alien race(外星人), the film’s director James Cameron asked an expert in languages from the University of Southern California to invent a language for the Na’vi. Professor Paul Frommer combined the languages spoken among Indians, Africans and mid-Asians and worked with James Caneron for four years to create the Na’vi language based on the original 30 words that the director had already come up with.

According to Professor Frommer, the most important characteristic of the Na’vi language is that it could be pronounced. “This is an alien language but obviously it has to be spoken by human actors and actresses,” Professor Frommer told the BBC, “it has to sound natural and it should make human beings comfortable when using it.”

The language has a vocabulary of around 1000 words but Progessor Formmer hopes to enlarge the vocabulary in possible follow-ups to the film and in video games. The professor hopes that one day his creation will be as successful as the Klingon alien language from the “Star Trek”films. “There’s a translation of Hamlet into Klingon and it has received great popularity among the audiences,” says Professor Frommer,“if anything like this happens to the Na’vi language, I’d be very happy.”

    32. What do we know about“Avatar” from this passage?

    A. The story in it is a moving love story.

    B. It brings the producer 1 billion in total.

    C. The story in it happens on an alien planet.

    D. It talks about humans and aliens’ friendship.

    33. The director of “Avatar” James Cameron had a language invented for the Na’vi to

    A. make the film a whole mystery          B. make the Na’vi more believable

    C. make the Na’vi different from humans   D. make the film have specific characteristics

    34. Who first created the basic words of the Na’vi language?

    A. Paul Frommer.       B. An Indian.    C. James Cameron     D. Hamlet.

    35. We can infer from the passage that

    A. James Cameron will produce follow-ups to “Avatar”

    B. the Na’vi language is another kind of the Klingon language

    C. the director believes the Na’vi language will be popular

    D. Paul Frommer hopes to add new words to the Na’vi language
