While many countries love their tea, UK citizens are particularly proud of being “tea people”. The average UK citizen consumes nearly 2 kilograms of tea each year.
Tea only made its way to England in large quantities in the first years of the 17th century. Tea from China and a few other Asian countries was being sold more widely in England at that time. Then tea was getting more and more popular among different social classes.
There are many varieties of tea. Black tea mixtures are still the most common type drunk in the UK. Black tea is dark in colour, because the leaves have been allowed to oxidize (氧化) before drying. This is why we usually serve it with milk, although it is not uncommon to drink it black or with lemon. You may still find tea made with loose tea leaves, served up in a pot, and poured into the best china cups with saucers (茶托) for visitors.
Tea is still a large part of daily life in the UK today, but it seems to be on the decrease. The amount of tea sold in the UK fell by more than 10% in the five years leading up to 2002, and has been dropping ever since. Tea sales fell by 6% in 2014 alone, and most restaurants report selling more than twice as many cups of coffee as they do tea. More than£1 billion was spent on coffee in high street stores in 2013, more than twice what was spent on tea bags.
Still, what goes around comes around; it’s sure to become fashionable again.
31. Which of the following is true according to the first three paragraphs?
A. Tea made its way to England in the early years of the 16th century.
B. The UK usually serves black tea with lemon.
C. Tea from China was being sold more widely in England now.
D. UK citizens take pride in being “tea people”.
32. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A. Tea sales fell by 6% in 2014 alone
B. Since 2002, the sales of tea has been on the decrease
C. In 2013, the money spent on tea was£3 billion
D. Most restaurants like selling tea than coffee
33. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce tea in the UK B. To show the author’s preference for tea
C. To introduce the functions of tea D. To compare tea in China and UK

Herta Müller, the Romanian-born German writer, has won the 2009 Nobel Prize for Literature. The award was announced in Stockholm on Thursday.
Ms. Müller, 56, immigrated to Germany from Romania in 1987. She is the first German writer to win the Nobel in literature since Günter Grass in 1999 and the 13th winner writing in German since the prize was first given in 1901. She is the 12th woman to win the literature prize. But unlike previous winners like Doris Lessing and V. S. Naipaul, Ms. Müller is relatively unknown outside of literary circles in Germany.
“I am very surprised and still cannot believe it,” Ms. Muller said in a statement delivered by her publisher in Germany. “I can’t say anything more at the moment.”
She has written some 20 books, but just 5 have been translated into English, including the novels “The Land of Green Plums” and “The Appointment.”
At the news conference on Thursday at the German Publishers & Booksellers Association in Berlin, where she lives, Ms. Müller, wearing all black and sitting on a leopard-print chair, appeared nervous with all the cameras flashing on her.
When asked what it meant that her name would now be mentioned in the same breath as German greats like Thomas Mann and Heinrich Böll, Ms. Müller remained philosophical. “I am now nothing better and I’m nothing worse,” she said, adding, “My inner thing is writing. That’s what I can hold on to.”
Earlier in the day, at a news conference in Stockholm, Peter Englund, secretary of the Swedish Academy, said Ms. Müller was honored for her “very, very distinct special language” and because “she has really a story to tell about cruelty and repression in a village much like the one Müller grew up in.”
The awards ceremony was planned for Dec. 10 in Stockholm. As the winner, Ms. Müller would receive about $1.4 million.
34. Ms. Müller was surprised at the news about her winning the award because ______.
A. she was born a Romanian and became a famous German writer
B. she had missed a lot of chances to win the prize
C. she had expected to win the prize eagerly for long
D. she thought she was just an unknown writer in this field
35. By saying “I am now nothing better and I’m nothing worse”, Ms. Müller meant that ______.
A. she thought highly of herself
B. she thought nothing of herself
C. she was very modest
D. she was no worse than the other German writers
36. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. The Biography of Herta Müller
B. Herta Müller Wins Literature Nobel Prize
C. Herta Müller, a Great Successful Romanian Writer
D. The Great Awards Ceremony for Herta Müller
C
A competition making up Versailles literature was launched on Sina Weibo recently. So what is Versailles literature?
Actually, the term has nothing to do with the French palace nor with literature. It came from The Rose of Versailles, a Japanese manga series about aristocratic(贵族化的)life at the palace of Versailles in France in the late 18th century, and was coined by a Chinese influencer earlier this year. Known as humblebragging, it is a boast(吹牛)disguised as a complaint. “I have too many houses. How can I decide which one to decorate?” and “I thought I lost weight this morning. So disappointed when I realized it was because I took off the huge diamond ring my boyfriend gave me last night” are some examples of Versailles literature. The intention is to show off — usually things of materialistic values, yet one ought to pretend that’s not the point.
As the 19th century English author Jane Austen famously wrote, “Nothing is more deceitful(欺诈的)than the appearance of humility(谦逊).” The psychology behind humblebragging is to be recognized for one’s successes and be liked by others at the same time, according to scholars. In her article titled Why do people hate humblebragging? published in Psychology Today, psychologist Dr. Susan Krauss Whitbourne at the University of Massachusetts Amherst noted that humblebragging is a “strategy in pursuit of respect” because it draws attention to one’s accomplishments in a circuitous way.
However, studies on social media users show that humblebragging as a self-promotion strategy does not work. In the essay Humblebragging: A distinct and ineffective self-presentation strategy, the University of North Carolina researcher Ovul Sezer and Harvard University scholars Francesca Gino and Michael Norton concluded from their research that humblebraggers are perceived more negatively than straight braggers due to the former’s insincerity. “The critical factor differentiating the two groups of people is sincerity. People don’t like braggers, but they at least see them as more sincere than humblebraggers,” said Francesca Gino.
So, how can we annoy humblebraggers back? “Just pretend you don’t get whatever it is they try to show off,” a netizen advised. “And respond with genuine sympathy for their complaints.”
37. Which of the following statements is typical of “Versailles literature”?
A. You know who my father is? My father is Li Gang
B. Got five offers to date. I’m at a loss which to choose
C. It’s a headache how to make my son tidy up his room regularly
D. I’m fed up with living in the countryside with no shopping malls around
38. What is the psychology behind humblebragging?
A. To win others’ sympathy B. To earn others’ admiration
C. To show his/her sincerity D. To mask his / her complaint
39. What does the underlined world “circuitous” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. indirect B. straightforward C. ambiguous D. double-edged
40. What can’t be inferred from the passage?
A. Braggers are relatively more sincere than humblebraggers
B. Humblebragging is an artificial appearance of being humble
C. To respond with real sympathy will discourage humblebraggers
D. If you want to be perceived positively, avoid using Versailles literature

Much of the work in today’s world is accomplished in teams. Most people believe the best way to build a great team is to gather a group of the most talented individuals. 41 Companies spend millions hiring top business people. Is their money well spent?
42 They focused on football, basketball and baseball. The results are mixed for football and basketball, adding talented players to a team proves a good method, but only up to the point where 70% of the players are top talent;above that level, the team’s performance begins to decline. Interestingly, this trend isn’t evident in baseball, where additional individual talent keeps improving the team’s performance.
To explain this phenomenon, the researchers explored the degree to which a good performance by a team requires its members to coordinate(协调)their actions. 43 In baseball, the performance of individual players is less dependent on teammates. They conclude that when task interdependence is high, team performance will suffer when there is too much talent, while individual talent will have positive effects on team performance when task interdependence is lower. If a basketball star is, for example, trying to gain a high personal point total,he may take a shot himself when it would be better to pass the ball to a teammate, affecting the team’s performance. Young children learning to play team sports are often told,“There is no I in TEAM.” 44
Another possibility is that when there is a lot of talent on a team, some players may make less effort. Just as in a game of tug-of-war(拔河比赛)whenever a person is added, everyone else pulls the rope with less force.
45 An A-team may require a balance — not just A players, but a few generous B players as well.
A. It’s not a simple matter to determine the nature of talent
B. Sports team owners spend millions of dollars attracting top talent
C. The group interaction and its effect drew the researchers’ attention
D. Stars apparently do not follow this basic principle of sportsmanship
E. Several recent studies examined the role of talent in the sports world
F. Building up a dream team is more complex than simply hiring the best talent
G. This task interdependence distinguishes baseball from football and basketball

作文
In order to encourage the students to take outdoor exercise, our school organized a mountain-climbing on October 30. Hundreds of us took part in it.
It was a nice day. At 8:00 am, we gathered at the foot of Cuihua Mountain and set out for the top in high spirits. All the way we were chatting, singing and laughing, enjoying the fresh air and the beautiful scenery. When some fell behind, others would come and offer help. About two hours later, we all reached the top. Bathed in sunshine, we jumped and cheered with joy.
The activity has benefited us a lot. Not only has it got us close to nature and give us relaxation from heavy schoolwork, but also it has promoted the friendship among us. What a wonderful time! (131words)
