Dorothy lived in a house in Kansas, with Uncle Henry, and a dog called Toto. It was often windy there. Sometimes the wind came very fast and suddenly. That was a cyclone(龙卷风). And when it came, people went down into their cellars and stayed there.

One day Uncle Henry came out and looked up at the sky. Then he ran quickly back into the house.

“There’s a cyclone coming,” he called. “We must go down into the cellar!”

They ran to the door of the cellar, but Toto was afraid. Dorothy tried to take Toto with her and ran to the cellar door. But before she got there, the cyclone hit(袭击) the house.

And then a very strange(奇怪的) thing happened. The house went slowly up into the sky. It took Dorothy and Toto up to the top of the cyclone. Dorothy looked through the open cellar door and saw hills and houses, a long way down. She felt afraid and closed the cellar door quickly. She knew she couldn’t do anything about it. Later she and Toto went to sleep.

When Dorothy opened her eyes again, the house was on the ground. She opened the door and went out with Toto.

Dorothy gave a little cry. “This isn’t Kansas, Toto! And who are these people?”

There were three short men and a little old woman. They walked up to Dorothy and said, “Thank you! Now the people are free!”

Your friends come to visit you at your home. Should you ask them to take off their shoes? In many countries around the world, taking off your shoes indoors is a polite(礼貌的) thing to do. However, it’s more than just polite. It’s good hygiene(卫生), too.

Bacteria(细菌) like to grow on shoes. Some of them can be dangerous, according to scientists from the University of Houston in the US. One of the most common kinds of bacteria on your shoes is Escherichia coli(大肠杆菌).

Researchers found this kind of bacteria on 96 percent of the shoes they studied. Some kinds of Escherichia coli can lead to diarrhea(腹泻) or even brain(大脑) illnesses. Other kinds of them on shoes can be harmful(有害的) to our skin, blood and heart.

But we don’t need to worry about this too much. For healthy people, the bacteria on shoes will have little or no danger, according to Live Science. If healthy people get thousands of harmful bacteria on their hands, they will become sick.

Also, bacteria stay on the ground most of the time. But most of us don’t spend a lot of time on the ground. “In this situation, you’re not going to get sick from it,” according to Jonathan Sexton from the University of Arizona, US. However, children who often climb around on the floor and people in bad health should be careful about the bacteria. For healthy adults, it is not a big deal.

Jiang Mengnan, a girl from Chenzhou, Hunan, won the Touching China Person of the Year Award for 2021.

Jiang Mengnan was born in 1992 in Mangshan, Chenzhou. When she was six months old, her parents found she was unable to speak. Three months later, the doctors told Jiang Mengnan’s parents that she lost hearing in two ears and they couldn’t help her at all.

Since then, Jiang Mengnan’s world has been silent. Her parents, who are both teachers, didn’t want their lovely daughter to be a deafmute(聋哑人) all her life.
