A woman who lost one leg to cancer is seeking to break a world record by completing 102 marathon-length runs in 102 days.

Jacky Hunt-Broersma, who lost the bottom half of her left leg to a rare form of cancer in 2001, set her goal in mid-January. And every day since then, she has been running the distance

of a marathon ( 马拉松 ). “Part of my body was gone. For me the most difficult problem was accepting my disability,” she told the reporter.

Until five years ago, she was not very active. But then she looked into running and decided to give it a try. The sport ended up being quite costly. Currently, the carbon fiber blade (碳纤维叶片) she uses, which is designed specifically for running, costs about $10,000. “Running really changed my life,” she said. “It helped me accept myself as a person with disability. It gave me a sense of freedom. I fell in love with the process of pushing my body further just to see what I could do.”

However, she has faced both physical and mental difficulties during her record-breaking attempt. On one recent day, Hunt-Broersma felt breakdown at 24 kilometers and began to cry. In that moment, she felt like her planned goal might not happen at all. By dividing it into little goals, she finally picked herself up and carried on.

Hunt-Broersma’s main support team is her husband and their two young children. She is posting her progress online and has also got a large social media following.

As she nears the end of her goal, Hunt-Broersma is hoping to inspire a single thought in others: You’re stronger than you think and you’re capable of so much more.

    24. What did Hunt-Broersma struggle the most with?

    A. Taking part in a marathon.

    B. Breaking a world record.

    A. She was crazy about running.

    B. She spent much money on running.

    C. Running freed her from her housework.

    D. Running helped her realize her life goal.

    26. Why did Hunt-Broersma break down one day?

    A. She got no support from her family.

    B. She lost a record-breaking chance.

    C. She felt hopeless about her goal.

    D. She missed a sense of freedom.

    27. What does Hunt-Broersma’s story try to tell us?

    A. Better late than never.

    B. Many hands make light work.

    C. Good things come to those who wait.

    D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.

    C

No matter where you go in the world, you will notice something unusual about the trees ---

their trunks (树干) are painted white.

People whitewash trees for a variety of reasons, depending on the area they live in. In Mexico, the purpose of whitewashing is to protect the tree and fight against a specific type of ant. Greece is another country where you can find trees painted white. According to tradition, during Easter, everything gets whitewashed. Make sure to plan your next trip to Greece if you won’t want to miss this interesting and unique tradition.

Generally speaking, the main purpose of whitewashing is to protect the tree from heat and

insects ( 昆虫 ). And few are as effective and accessible as whitewashing. When the tree is exposed to too much sun in the daytime, the tree cells become more active; however, the roots as well as the other unexposed areas of the tree remain inactive. If the water that the tree needs cannot be provided from the roots, the tree will have a dry surface. Once you whitewash them, the surfaces of young trees won’t get dry easily. If the tree is suffering from being sunburned, the wound can also allow the insects to enter the inside of the tree. Moreover, relative diseases can influence how the tree grows. Whitewash prevents any access to the inside of the tree.

Pure white paint works efficiently ( 高效地 ) when it comes to reflecting both heat and sunlight away from the tree. White paint allows the tree to spend more time taking in carbon dioxide (CO2). The more carbon dioxide the trees take in, the more energy they create. Gardeners whitewash trees not only for protecting their trees but also helping produce more fruit.

Painting the trees white won’t stop traffic accidents, but it can make them less frequent, because drivers can see the trees much more clearly, even during the night.

    28. Why do people in Greece paint the trees white? A.To see the trees more clearly.
    B. To protect the trees from ants.

    C. To make their cities beautiful.

    D. To celebrate a traditional festival.

    29. How can whitewashing protect trees from insects?

    A. By influencing the growth of trees.

    B. By helping supply water to trees.

    C. By preventing access into trees.

    D. By drying the surface of trees.

    30. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

    A. Whitewashing trees may increase fruit production.

    B. Painting trees white helps stop traffic accidents.

    C. White paint provides more energy for trees.

    D. White paint helps trees create more CO2.

    31. Where is the text probably taken from?

    A. A health report.

    B. A travel handbook.

    C. A scientific magazine.

    D. A product advertisement.

    D

Livestreaming ( 直 播 ) through platforms such as Amazon Live and TikTok is an increasingly popular way to sell goods online. It usually lasts between 5 and 10 minutes, and someone promotes a product. Viewers can then readily buy it by just clicking on a link.

We analyzed (分析) 99,451 sales cases on a livestream selling platform and matched them with actual sales cases. In terms of time, that is equal to over 2 million 30-second television advertisements.

To determine the emotional ( 情绪的 ) expression of the salesperson, we used two deep learning models: a face model and an emotion model. The face model discovers the presence or absence of a face in a frame of a video stream. The emotion model then determines the probability that a face is exhibiting any of the six basic human emotions: happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, fear or disgust. For example, smiling signals a high probability of happiness,

while an off-putting expression usually points toward anger.

We wanted to see the effect of emotions expressed at different times in the sales cases so we counted probabilities for each emotion for all 62 million frames in our database. We then combined these probabilities with other possible aspects that might drive sales — such as price and product characteristics — to judge the effect of emotion.

We found that, perhaps unsurprisingly, when salespeople show more negative emotions — such as anger and disgust — the volume of sales went down. But we also found that a similar thing happened when the salespeople show high levels of positive emotions, such as happiness or surprise.

A likely explanation, based on our research, is that smiling can be disgusting because it lacks true feelings and can reduce trust in the seller. A seller’s happiness may be taken as a sign that the seller is gaining interests at the customer’s expense.

    32. What does Paragraph 1 tell about livestreaming sales?

    A. It increases the prices of products.

    B. It helps sellers save money on ad.

    C. It makes shopping convenient for buyers.

    D. It promotes better buyer-seller relationship.

    33. What does the underlined word “off-putting” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A. Uneasy. B. Unpleasant.

    C. Lively. D. Strange.

    34. How do customers feel about the seller’s smiling?

    A. They feel respected.

    B. They feel satisfied.

    C. They feel cheated.

    D. They feel trusted.

    35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?

    A. Livestreamers Sell Products Successfully

    B. Expressions Influence Online Product Sales

    C. Emotions: Means of Communication

    D. Smiling: A Way to Increase Sales

W: I didn’t see you on the bus. Your normal seat was empty.
M: I was at the stop when Jack drove by. He gave me a lift.
W: I thought you might have taken the train.
    Text 6
M: Are you still OK for going to the zoo on Saturday?
W: Oh, haven’t you heard? It’s closed all weekend while they move the animals to new areas in the zoo.
M: What? I was looking forward to that.
W: Or we could go horse-riding?
M: I’m not sure I can afford that.
W: Well, the movie about the woman who rescues animals is on in town all week. We could see that.
M: Fine. Let’s do that. More fun than staying at home.
    Text 7
W: Hey, Steve! Over here! Don’t you remember me?
M: Oh, wow! You’re Lucy Green, aren’t you?
W: That’s right. We used to be in the same class in middle school in New York for two years, right?
M: Yeah. But you were really quiet at that time, weren’t you?
    W: Yeah. I wasn’t very outgoing.
M: But you were always friendly. Do you still play basketball?
W: Yes, but I’m more interested in music these days. I play the piano, and I often go to concerts. How about you? Do you still like playing tennis?
M: Of course. It’s still my favorite activity.
    Text 8
M: My history professor says I should think about a job in politics. But I don’t think I’d make a good politician.
    W: Why not?
M: You know me. I’m not good at dealing with people. And politicians have to work with people all the time.
W: That’s true. So what do you think you want to do?
M: I think I will be a good artist. I love painting pictures.
W: That reminds me of a problem I’m having. You know my parents have a restaurant, right? They want me to be the manager.
    M: And you want to?
W: No way. A restaurant manager has to manage other people. It’d be terrible. I’m too disorganized. Honestly, I want to be a teacher because I like working with kids, and I’m good at it.
    M: That’s true.
    Text 9
W: I visited the countryside museum last week. It opened two months ago. You’d like it there.
M: Why? Is there lots of information about trees?
W: No. It’s about wild birds that live in the forest. You can watch videos there too.
M: Oh! Is it open on Saturdays?
W: Yes. It’s only closed on Mondays. I went on a Thursday.
    M: And where is it?
W: It’s fifteen miles from here. It took about twenty minutes to get there and about thirty to get home because the roads were busier then. Here’s a map for your parents.
    M: Thanks.
W: When I went, there was a special plant exhibition but they’re having a study day for teenagers there soon about different kinds of clouds.
M: Do I have to pay for the study day?
    W: You’re fourteen, aren’t you?
    M: Yes.
W: Well, you won’t because it’s free for students who are your age or younger. But it costs £18 for students who are sixteen or older.
M: Thanks. I’ll tell my parents.
    Text 10
W: Yesterday, I went to a place called Sidelli with my family. It was really interesting. On the morning, we visited a theater. It was built 2,000 years ago beside the sea and people used to watch plays there in the open air. There used to be an old fishing village nearby. After that, we had a guided tour. Rather than go to the old palace, which is full of tourists, our guide took us up a hill and showed us around what’s left of a library. Most of it had fallen down, but it still had a fantastic atmosphere. We then took a bus into the countryside for lunch, and we ate next to a waterfall. Afterwards, we took a walk from there to a lake. In the afternoon, we chose to go on one of two different factory tours. One factory made pots and plates, which sounded dull to me, and one produced carpets. That was the one we went on. There were lots of traditional designs, all made by local people. It was Amazing. That was the last thing we did that day.
